Japanese Supermarket Tour with Food Prices | Buying Groceries in Japan

- Join us for a Japanese supermarket tour in Nikko as we showcase all of the different food items you can buy when you're shopping for groceries in Japan. One of the best budget travel tips for those visiting Japan is to regularly eat breakfast, lunch and dinner from either a supermarket or convenience store. If you visit later on in the evening or even late afternoon certain items will be discounted at 20, 30 or even 40% off the original price. This is especially true for items like sushi and tempura.
We noticed in the fruit and vegetable section that certain items can be really pricey including items such as apples and watermelons and oranges out of season. However, bananas are cheap as are many other vegetables such as carrots and leafy greens.
The best bargains for Japanese food items in a grocery store in Japan are definitely the prepacked meals including items such as sushi, tempura, sashimi and takoyaki to name just a few. Certain Japanese snacks such as shrimp crackers are also delicious as well if you're craving something salty.
In terms of beverages Japanese Sake and beer are most common but these days they also have a big foreign wine section where you can buy red wine from Chile as an example.
Overall, touring a Japanese supermarket is fascinating and one of our fondest memories in Japan was just going a few times a week to get groceries. Have you been to a Japanese supermarket before? What were some of the best bargains you fond and what did you find expensive? Let us know in the comments below.

Japanese Supermarket Tour with Food Prices! Buying Groceries in Japan:
If there is something you need to know about Sam it is that he loves supermarkets wherever he goes. I love supermarkets. Anytime we're visiting a new country or even a new city for that matter I have to go in and check out the supermarket. And not just to get the essentials. I need to go through every aisle. Now that we're in Nikko, Japan take a look at this. There is a mountain behind the supermarket.
We're going to be going inside and showing you guys what a Japanese supermarket is like. This is our first supermarket tour in Japan so let's go check it out. Supermarket tour. He's got his little basket.
Grocery shopping mission accomplished. Yep. So price point was 2,515 Yen which was just under $23 US dollars. I think that is an absolute steal.
Look at all of the stuff. Two bags full of food. It includes wine it includes food it includes fruit. Vegetables. Snacks. So yeah that is going to be more than just one meal obviously. Yes. The wine should last us a couple of nights.
Here is the supermarket with the mountains.
I think we're going to go back and eat this and maybe go for a walk later. Anyways hope you guys enjoyed this Japanese supermarket tour. Please let us know you thought was the most interesting part if you've tried any of these items or you would like to try some of these items. Bye for now.
This is part of our Travel in Japan video series showcasing Japanese food, Japanese culture and Japanese experiences.

Most supermarkets in Japan discount the prepared food (sushi, tempura, etc.) by 50% at the end of the day - usually after 6PM. Great deals.
Great tip Eric!
@@samuelandaudrey I'm from Canada too BC yeah $4 equivalent for a great Quality macro Cabernet Sauvignon red Wine. Is a great value Chile is a great macro Wine making country.
I'm with you Sam, I always check out the supermarkets everywhere I go 😁✌
So cool to hear Leo! Any particular favorites?
@@samuelandaudrey Bonus in Iceland was cool
Grocery stores are my happy place for sure! Woohoo. Some of my favorites include Julius Meinl in Vienna, Austria - Buford Highway Farmer's Market in Atlanta, Georgia and Marukai Market in Little Tokyo Los Angeles, California.
Just dont touch all the food that you aren't going to buy. Shit is nasty. Example @3:29
ne too!!! my faves are the swedish and french ones💜
Wow I am so glad you guys enjoy supermarket in my country. Yes, fruits are actually expensive in Japan. For Japanese prices make them crazy .Then, when I was living in Plattsburgh, NY near Montreal I remembered just 3 pieces of sushi was 10 dollars even in cafe of college. anyway thank you for coming to Japan.
Thank yoU! We really enjoyed visiting the supermarkets. That is so true about prices being relative. Sushi tends to be very expensive in North America.
I was surprised at how cheap the mochi was!! Where I work part-time in the US, it's like $4 for 2 small mochi, while in this video they have six of them for about $1.50 which is insane to me
小野圭亮 Jesus thats expensive sushi
Hi dr
My question is how can they survive without fruit since it's expensive in there.
Yay! New video!! I love going to a local supermarket when I travel. It's a fun way to learn a little bit about the local produce and foods from the area.
Thanks Adi! Totally agree with you!
I am like you Sam love supermarkets in different countries looking at all the unique stuff that we do not have. Love the video
Thanks Effie! We had so much fun checking them out.
I think it’s great that a traveler, like you guys, enjoy exploring a local groceries store in a foreign country.
It shows curiously/interest/respect to a foreign culture and that’s a wholehearted character, humanitarian.
Thanks for sharing your journey.
Be safe and enjoy Japan!
Thank you very much! We love to see what is available in local grocery stores. We'll try to make more tours like this in the future.
Sam’s enthusiasm for food is amazing. Audrey, you balance support and not letting him fill the basket with grace;)
Yeah she needs to back off and stop with her sarcastic ride comments. Let Sam be happy and buy what he wants.
Oh my God I can smell the air. What a beautiful setting for a supermarket. Added it to my list for when I visit again.
When you came out the store the scenery, oh hey you just said it.. lol the mountains are beautiful.😋❤️👍🏼✅💚
Thanks Sarah! The views were incredible.
Ah the supermarket tour was great. I love taking my time looking at food! I so enjoy cooking Japanese meals so I had such fun watching you pick up the vegetables and foodstuffs asking how would one eat this. So cool!
Thank you very much Cheron! We really enjoyed visiting supermarkets during our time in Japan.
You guys are ADORABLE. Hahaha, love Sam's enthusiasm. I understand it, I am from Norway and when I moved to London I would browse for hours, then I moved to the US and my husband would be so annoyed as I spent AGES at Sams Club and Walmart etc. It's fun! You find things you've never seen before, and fun versions of things.
Thank you! That is really cool to hear!
Thanks for sharing your awesome experiences! I’m unable to travel so I love this video!
That’s so interesting to watch... beautiful view in the back of the supermarket!
THank you very much Camie!
And here I thought, only I had a thing for supermarkets😂. But that backdrop with that design for a supermarket is postcard Worthy!!!!
supermarkets in Japan are a great way to immerse yourself in the culture and have a very "culture shock" experience. My fav
Thanks Alison! That is very true.
Grocery shopping overseas is one of my favorite things to do, too!
Great video I enjoy seeing different foods from other countries 👍
Thanks Liam! We'll do more of these in the future.
Really enjoyed watching your shopping spree! Thanks!🇨🇦😊

It is maybe the most scenic grocery store we've ever visited.

That was awesome! That mochi looked amazing. Always wanted to try Japanese beer.
Thanks Scott! So many great things to try.
The Pep in his step!! we'll try to do that... cheap prices wow. Great picks. We always pick up japanese ice cream everytime we are in the supermarket. We love mochis too!
Thank yoU!
Visiting the supermarket is lots of fun.... u kinda experience what the locals do & the stuff there are generally cheap.... good place to buy souvenirs snacks to bring back home
Thanks John! Totally agree with you. A much better and cheaper alternative than at the airport.
Guys love this vid. Been binging all your japan vids and you are very thorough at showcasing each item. Its mouth watering and appreciated :D
Ah, thank you very much! We had such a great time in Japan. Feels like a lifetime ago. Hope you're safe and healthy.
I always thought I was the only one to check out supermarkets. I just love seeing different things on sale.
So cool to hear Robert!
Speaking of walls dedicated to stuff in supermarkets, I remember one in Valparaiso, Chile that had nothing but mayonnaise. Yup.
Wow, James! That is hilarious. All the mayo in the world...lol
Love watching your videos😊👍🏼
Thank you very much!
Very informative video. I really enjoy it.
Thank you very much Taha!
I really enjoy your video. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much! Thanks for watching.
Wow, the wine was such a steal. Buen provecho
Thanks Liz! It was a great deal.
I love supermarkets too.. such a nice way to see how a area lives :)
I know the kids in the candy store feeling when visiting a Japanese supermarket, especially in Japan. In the bigger towns, you can check out the basement floor of big department stores where you can find pricier ready-cooked foods and desserts. You pay for what you get, you know. Also, I see you guys like the same brand of Chilean wines as I do. You can get them at the local Japanese 7-Eleven, too. Love all your videos.
Thank you very much Pete! I noticed they had a good wine selection from Chile and France in many stores in Japan.
This helps me a lot. I'm going to experience the Japanese's supermarkets next week. I'm so hungry now.
Thank you! Hope you have a great experience.
I love going to the supermarket when I go overseas too!
So cool to hear Stephanie!
Same here! I love a good super-market
Good video there! it prepares me with my food budgeting for 2 weeks in Tokyo! Thanks guys!
Thanks Nicholas!
When I went to a supermarket in Japan on my first day, I chanced upon 1 liter carton of black coffee and 1 liter carton of milk for 99 yen each. And my hotel room has refrigerator, so I have instant coffee in the morning. Also, I bought packed assorted breads for 99 yen. It seems they were old stocks that they were selling but they still tasted good.
Ahh we do love a supermarket tour! 😁
Thanks! We'll try to make more!
Watching this makes me miss Japan so much :'o
You guys should go to the ramen museum and the ramen factory in Yokohama!
Definitely have to check out the supermarkets abroad! I only got to see the convenience stores in Japan as I stayed mainly in the city centre but they were great as well. Would have loved to have gone to a large store!
Thanks Mike! We actually visited convenience stores more often during our time in Japan.
I don't think I've seen Sam this excited since....well since the last food video - just like his spirit animal - Garfield the cat - that's what life revolves around - and yes that was a cool HILL backdrop to a cool supermarket with an awesome roof color, very close to Sam's T-shirt - life does work in mysterious ways guys...:-)
Yeah and his wife kills his spirit by telling him no when he works for his money
lol, she was just teasing ;)
Garfield is definitely my spirit animal ;)
You should more often do supermarket tours, it is really interesting to see what type foods people buy in other countries.
Thank you! We'll try to do that more often.
Agreed
Nice supermarket. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Yes, love markets😊
Thanks Dolores! So do we.
Thanks for all your help, I'm from Quebec, and will be in Japan for 26 days at the end of April, when I'm Nikko I know exactly where I'll get my diner before getting on the train back to Tokyo… your videos are so much fun to watch. Keep it up !
Thank you very much Josee! Hope you have a great trip :)
I’m like Sam. I love them too! I can’t wait to buy all the goodies from them convenience stores.
I enjoyed visiting canadian supermarkets too. Brought to Brazil a lot of maple lol.
Thanks Mario! Ah, I miss maple syrup these days ;)
Hi guys!! Happy to see new uploads yesterday and today!! Can't help leaving comments when I see you guys in Japan back in time! I love, I mean I loooooove super market too, of course because of the food 😍and also seeing culture in it. How was your dinner and walks?! Hope there would be another episode of that though even if it's not, hope they were enjoyable. Almost all the veggies and fruits prices at super markets in Japan are noted as per quantity/package. Definitely miss that daikon radish for that price. Here, in the States, even at an Asian super markets, they cost around $1 per pound. Again, like you mentioned, everything foreign costs more! Thank you for the video!!
Thank you very much Kaja! It is fascinating to see what is expensive and inexpensive in different countries we visit.
It's difficult not to love supermarkets around the world. And I think Japanese supermarkets are way crazy! 😂 Love your videos!
Thank yoU!
I love it..i would have bought the hole store..delicious food i thik...cheers!!!
Waaahhh japanese food iloveit😍
Thanks Jessa! Japanese food is great!
Very nice tour. I’ve never been to japan. Would love to go visit.
Thanks Patricia! Hope you can visit soon.
Thank you!
Awesome video. Takes me back to Japan, I’m definitely craving another trip. If you guys don’t use it already, google translate with Word Lens was really useful to me in Japan. Enjoy! x
Thank you Sahan! Hope you can revisit again soon.
Visiting the supermarket in a new country is my fave thing to do in a new country to! Its always so fascinating to see what they sell in other countries 😄 hehe love that mini cart! They sell sushi??? So yum!
Thank you! Totally agree with you. Sushi was a real highlight and so affordable.
I'm with Sam, foreign supermarkets are so interesting I always love to explore them when i go to new countries ! and shrimp chips are delicious 💜
Great to hear Ariane!
They r also my favorites!
Yes, fruits and veggies can be very expensive in Japan, one reason is that mountains dominate Japan's landscape, covering 75 to 80 percent of the country. And a tip for you guys, buy sushi or other bento boxes in the supermarket after 8 pm. Pretty much anything left is usually going to be 50% off.
Thanks Yuqi! That is an excellent suggestion!
I love their sushi 🍣 and sashimi 😘😘😘
Tasty and affordable.
I’m the same as you, Sam. I’m obsessed with supermarkets (ever since I was a kid), and I love checking them out in a new country or even city in my home country. Thanks to you both for the cool tour!
Thanks Will! That is really cool to hear. Visited any interesting ones lately?
@@samuelandaudrey Not since COVID really. But just before the lockdowns, I went to Amsterdam for a couple of conferences and discovered Albert Hein. One was literally connected to my hotel, so I stopped in every day for breakfast and snacks.
Love it 😍
THank you!
You are doing a fine job, keep up the good work!
Thank you very much Lloyd!
just got settled here in misawa aomori and still feeling lost inside japanese supermarkets 😅😂 but im actually enjoying every minute of my grocery runs. there's a lot to explore! 🥰 thank you for this vlog!
Thank you very much Arkijona! We sure miss Japan.
nice video, thanks
Thanks!
I'm Italian and I loved when you described the spaghetti as "American Dishes". Italians would never eat pasta with those sauces ahahah
Yeah, that is not Italian pasta :)
Asja Fimiani what if hell for Italians is they find themselves in an infinite series of Olive Garden restaurants? Like, every business is Olive Garden and every house your room mates have a weird jersey shore or Long Island accent? That would be hell for everybody.
I was watching the video from Argentina in the spanish channel, and found this channel by chance. I didn't know you had the English channel, until now. It was a pleasant surprise...glad to see Samuel speaking more than a few words at last.😁
I can't get enough of you guys, so now I'll be watching both the Spanish and the English channels...wooohooo!!!
Love your fun, interesting, informative, exciting videos!!!
Wow! Thank you very much Glori! It has been a lot of fun trying to juggle both channels.
Agree with Sam, I love visiting supermarkets in other countries. VOLI in Montenegro and BIGD in Albania are both really good. Usual international items, but lots of local fresh meats, fish, cheese, breads and vegetable. Cant believe the prices for fresh fruit and vegetables in Japan, crazy expensive.
Thanks Andrew! We really enjoyed grocery shopping during our short tour through the Balkans. The produce was especially good and we ate paste quite often.
Loved this, thanks for sharing. The Mountain View is amazing
Thank you! It was quite the view!
I finally get to see my favorite milk tea of all time, Kirin milk tea. I have been searching for that brand of milk tea here for years. They stopped selling it here in my city for some reason.
That is cool to hear! Wonder why they stopped selling it.
I LOOOVE looking at supermarket tours uploaded from foreigners in countries foreign to them.
Thank you!
I feel his need to visit a supermarket. It says a lot about the locals and their eating habit. If you go to different supermarkets in different countries, I’d watch for sure!
Thanks! We'll try to make more of these.
I never have been to Japan before but I want to I definitely want to check out some of their food I have bought some Mochi before from this that sells Japanese food and some other stuff I wasn't a fan of the Mochi and I was surprised how much calories is in just one of them I think I bought the peach flavored Mochi.
Not many shopping experiences do you come out of the store and find a view like that! Awesome!! Thanks for sharing! Also, so many people are concerned with all the plastic used in packaging - Japan recycles more than any country I have seen. They are very strict with sorting and recycling!
Thanks Donelle! That is very true with regards to recycling and waste management in Japan.
I really like the video, good job guy's Japan is a amazing country ,good lucky to you two 😎
Thank you very much Marcelo! We had a great time in Japan.
Hey have you guys been to New Zealand? Here's amazing country to travel
The whole Japan series was espectacular you guys!!! I mean we really enjoyed your stories at home... thank you for so much fun!
Thank you very much! We have more Japan videos coming out soon.
Nice looking store
A basket in a basket?! 😄 I like this video, it’s pretty interesting to see what grocery stores have in other countries and the price difference. Also a lot of their fruits had their own little baskets they sat in I thought that was kinda cute 😂
Thanks Arianna!
Hey Samuel ! Eagerly waiting for the vlogs from your visit to India. Please upload them super soon !
Thanks Jyoti! I'm looking forward to starting the series again soon.
Ooh very interesting 😊👍
Thank you!
I watch a Japanese youtube couple and their channel is called tabieats. The way they explained it is that while a lot of Japanese fruit is expansive, in smaller grocery stores it’s usually cheaper and decently priced and the quality is slightly lower but still far superior to American or Canadian fruit
Interesting to hear!
Agree....Market whatever it is ... actually same in the end..... selling and buying activity there
gyoza and takoyaki is so delicious!
Thank you! It certainly is!
Supermarket is an interesting place to visit huh;)
Whenever I travel to some country I don’t know, I firstly go to supermarket, and check their price standards and try new snacks😆
Thanks Rion! We love to visit new supermarkets especially if we're visiting a new country for the first time.
Totally understand!
I think that's how we can enjoy the travel more😆
Dude, life in Japan is good!!The sushi looks delicious and inexpensive
It sure is!
it is fun to visit a supermarket overseas
Thanks! Totally agree!
