Strawberries are a winter fruit in Japan! They’re expensive because they are grown indoors, and taste way better than American strawberries!

not really, those fruits are expensive because of their policy. they can import fruit from other countries but they won't. taste are better just an excuse.

That may be true, but most American strawberries I’ve had are still pretty bitter compared to these large Japanese ones.

The wagyu (cattle bred and raised in Japan) beef in Japan supermarkets is a great deal really. For example, you could get something like a sirloin cut for around $20/kg in the US, and in Japan for the wagyu, same cuts, could be about $60/kg. Yea its ~3 times more expensive, but even if you get the cheapest cuts of wagyu available, its still more delicious and tender than most high end cuts of American beef. And of course the price of wagyu in Japan is far FAR less than getting the "wagyu" outside Japan, which usually isnt a full bred wagyu cow anyway and doesnt taste as good. I load up on a few kg of cheap wagyu cuts every time i go to Japan, its sooo delicious!

When I was in Japan last December for 30 days, I only eat supermarket take outs. Unless you want to taste their beef you can get it at any tourist attraction places. Do also try everything that has grape taste. My favourite is Fanta grape and also Muscat Squash by TOKUNOU MITSUYA. Can get it in all Family Marts or LAWSONS. And a must try is their soft serve milk ice cream, cream puffs, chocolate eclairs. If you want cheap sushi, look for a restaurant called KURA then try their grape sorbet… Thank me later🎉🎉

And Japanese people eat surprisingly little fruit.

The strawberries and grapes you saw are grown in Japan and its a specific strain developed in Japan, they general have guaranteed sweetness and quality from my experience over the years (Japan also has a specific grading system for their fruits according to sweetness and size etc) so they are going to be more expensive than something like Driscoll's strawberries for example.
Also same for the beef you saw there, it's mostly wagyu in different grading and their city of origin.

A part of it is because in the 80's, Japanese businessmen in the food industry (especially grocery stores) visited California supermarkets to study the way food was presented, arranged, etc. I remember seeing them at my local Hughes Market (absorbed by Ralph's) and Gelson's visiting by the bus loads. As a result, Japanese supermarkets tend to "promote" the upscale western image by using English wording.
I have been living in Japan for the past year and I sometimes feel like I'm in the US because of the English signage and departmental arrangement of the stores like Life Market and the large Aeon Supermarkets.

I am a Chinese who studied in Japan, and I think both of you in China have realized how much Chinese people love fruits and how active the fruit market is. But I have to admit that China's local breeding program is still catching up, and many popular fruit varieties such as grapes, oranges, and strawberries are either introduced from Japan, or Japanese varieties are used as parents in breeding.
At the same time, though, it's a shame that Japan is very good at growing good things and raising prices to the point where the average person simply can't afford them. It's a source of pride for Japanese fruit growers and a means of self-preservation, but it's really expensive!

Japanese oranges are produced in large quantities and can be purchased in large quantities at harvest time at a good price. Bananas and pineapples are basically imported from Southeast Asian countries and are cheaper.

Japanese people put much emphasis on how their food looks - ahead of taste and smell. They go to great lengths into packaging their products even for low cost items. Great examples you will see at department stores.
