    Love they give credit to other earlier band mates and managers for keeping the band together. Gracious and keeping it real. Seeing them all embrace at the end. Very moving.

    Mike Rutherford in a Hillman Imp, I'd like to see that! All these interviews are good showing the group off as naturally as you can get it. All credit to the interviewer - John, it's a subtle art performed well.

      I'm always a little worried when listening to a group interviews like this as it can improve or destroy the music I have listened to and loved over the years. But if you are going to do it, the do it with as much honesty as possible and accept that the people will not be as you want them to be and this is what these interviews bring. However you find them, they are brilliant professionals at their craft. @@JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES

    Really great that you left the last bit with Steven and Phil entering the room in there (and Tony Smith acting as the tea boy). Did you ever interview Ray Wilson on his time in Genesis? I'd love to hear some of his thoughts in this particular format, given that what I've read from him always seemed so bitter and resentful but that might be just the editors of the articles.

    • @JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES
      @JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Glad you’re appreciative of this. No. I haven’t interviewed Ray.

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 Před 4 měsíci +2

      I"ve followed his concerts a bit, he plays quite a bit of genesis and Peter Gabriel tracks simply because 'thats what sells'. I think his resentfulness is restricted to kind of being erased from the book,. In the book they sort of seem embarassed by the whole event, which is unfortunate, I don't see Calling All Stations as being that much worse than some of their cheesier albums. Tony has said he likely would have called it a day after Phil left, MIke has said he didn't really want to have to 'climb back up that hill', which seems fair enough, but Genesis do seem to have a habit of throwing members off a cliff, or as Mike would say, not "having a chat about options". I think Ray said something like he just got a call saying 'your services are no longer required',, but that may be wrong. But they do one on CAS on the 'album by album' interviews, where he gets to say "part of me wishes I hadn't done it". But Genesis would be the last band I would think would be 'embarassed about giving something a try'.
      However, awhile ago I did read some reviews just for fun, those music critics REALLY are a-holes. I mean, Phil left, they didn't fire him, to tell a band they 'shouldn't exist' is a bit fascist for a reviewer. But thats why they call it the music 'business'.

      Just wanted to add this tidbit:
      Interviewer: Who told you it was over? Did Tony Smith call you?
      Ray Wilson: Yeah. He just called me and said, “That’s it.” It wasn’t very pleasant. It was quite cold and unfortunate. On the plus side of it, Tony Banks came to Edinburgh not long after because his daughter was looking at universities for studies. He made a point of calling me up and we went for dinner, and he apologized for the way things worked out. He was the only one who did that, but he did it with dignity. That’s what you’d expect from Tony. He’s that kind of guy. We had dinner together, and that was it. It was over....
      ...as I said, it would have been nice to call me up and go, “Hey Ray, how are you doing? We’ve decided not to carry on.” It would have taken five minutes. That was the only thing that kind of upset me a bit. It was just the way that Mike and Tony Smith dealt with it. I didn’t think that was very nice. But Tony Banks was the opposite. He was a true gentleman.
      Interviewer: Have you spoken to anyone in the band in the past 20 years?
      Well, actually, when they decided to do the first greatest hits tour [in 2007] when Phil came back, they wanted me to be interviewed since they were doing a book about Genesis. And I said, “I’m not interested. I don’t really want to be involved in this. I’m kind of done with that. I’m doing my own thing, and I’m quite happy with that.” But Tony Banks, again, called me up and asked me to reconsider. He was very courteous and very, very pleasant about it. I said “OK,” and I did this interview for the book. "

      @santibanks Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@mikearchibald744 Ray's resentment isn't limited to being excluded in this interview. These were done around 2013 I believe, Ray mentions it in the boxset (2007ish) and even before that it was already clear from interviews that he kind of regrets the Genesis thing. Tony sent him a christmas card he mentioned, Mike seemed a bit more dismissive. But in either case, I find it highly cynical, hypocrite, and opportunistic to on one hand b*tch and m*an about your time in Genesis, but on the other hand play all these Genesis songs in which you had no involvement in the first place, simply because as you put it rightly: it's what sells some tickets at the venues. Steven is doing the Genesis thing now for over a decade and the commercial incentive is of course obvious. But he has every right to as he contributed and was in the band when that material was conceived and played. Ray singing Genesis material not on CAS is not OK in my book given his attitude.

    • @santibanks
      @santibanks Před 4 měsíci

      And that said, I don't think CAS is a bad album. As a Genesis record I find it kind of weak (similar to ATTW3 in that regards) but as a rock record at that time, I think it's pretty OK.

    A lot less tension and crossed arms compared to the Five interview
    The schoolmates are more relaxed and open .

      Hi. I agree. Ant should have been there. Between you and me, the decision not to include him in this discussion was a band management one. Ps I’m currently working on getting his full 2014 interview into shape. Ready to upload for the weekend .. hopefully.

      John, I’ve had nothing but platitudes for you and the team, to the point I just hit like 😅. These interviews are all invaluable as historical documents, and to be fair, the best out there, by far. A picture is worth so many words, especially with Brits. All that to say, hooray. I can’t wait for the Ant ‘upgrade.’ I do love his art.
      Cheers and best wishes, sir.
