I miss the days where a bloke who looked like your dad in his Sunday jeans could end up at number 1.
Just give it a few more years and Ed Sheeran will be right there for you :)
Wow dude you nailed it, so well put
I studied with Chester Thompson for 2 years In Nashville. Great drummer and super human being!
Was he doing the thing with two kits where you followed his playing?
that must have been a great HONOR i was listening to him when he was with ZAPPA , A great drumming
@@danmcaleer3993 It messes with my brain a little to think that Frank was still alive when this was made. Seems like something that could have been shot yesterday. So good...
Shame you never studied his drumming look where u b now you too be that awesome drummer
Are you still drumming? Do you have any video or audio of your drumming anywhere we could check it out?
Phil adjusting his mixer with drum stick with no change to his playing at all. A genius.
Phil Collins is build different. He just might be a "perfect musician"'.
Hand-picked by Phil Collins himself, Chester Thompson, sure filled some big shoes right away. Just the right man for the job. He gets all my respect.
He sure philled them shoes
Yes, it's a shame they fell out later, though.
criado por Frank Zappa ...
This is such a treat for true fans of the band, especially for us drummers. It's raw and epic!
Totally! 🔥
I could not agree more!
Legendary
Absolutely agree. But I HATE his kit. Those toms are so high!
@@mherndon9940 Are you sure? You're literally telling us that you have no more agreement in you? Not eve 5% more? I'll bet you could agree a tiny bit more. If you tried...
Phil was always such a relaxed drummer ! everything flows
Find him sloppy
First and foremost that’s his bread and butter
@@volkswagent6raillad850 I like drummers 🥁 who play relaxed and with technique.
Chester Thompson does not getting the recognition he deserves, in the drumming community. Great to PC doing his thing as well. Quality 😀🇬🇧🇺🇸
Yeah, not only is he a great talent, but really got screwed over by Phil - he was only used as a touring drummer.
His drumming on "One Size Fits All" is stellar.
Listen to his drumming in seconds.
out. Although wasnt that for the most part bill bruford? Not sure
Yeah he does. What community are you talking to? 😄😉👌
He doesn't lack in recognition from me. We all have a few or more players that hooked us. He is one of mine... changed my direction. While nonsense to me, I imagine Phil's drumming being a significant part of the band played a part in Chester being in the "background"
This is gold. No drum mics, no effects, just players and their tools. This kind of video has always made me so happy.
They’re miked
Maybe 1 or 2 but yeah your totally right.
Both kits are miked up 😴👀👀
both kits have mics on them...
And guitarist is playing through effects. All of those things are tools. Nothing beats a great live band though you’re right about that
It's so sad to me that so many younger people only know Genesis and Phil Collins from their more commercial work. Especially Phil Collins - he was one of the very few best prog drummers ever. One of my idols when I started playing and I practiced to their tunes for hours. What a talented band.
His drumming in Brand X was incredibly good.
If they know him at all
Don’t be sad. It is way easier for any kid to listen to their entire recorded output at the touch of a few phone buttons on a Spotify or CZcams app.
@@MykeLewisMusic Mind-boggling actually
This is true my dad would tell me back in the 80’s what a great drummer Collins is based on the prog days and I had no idea what he meant until I watched classic Genesis videos 30 years later on CZcams.
Hard to believe that was 32 years ago. Saw this tour in June of 92 at Dodger Stadium.
Me too. Epic!!!
i was there too my first genesis concert i’ll never forget!
and at that time the song itself was 19 years old...
I see them too at London’s Earl’s Court, absolutely out of this world!
Same.
Ohh I wish there was hours of this... I could and would watch this for days. I miss the boys from back in the day. I grew up with Genesis..
Indeed. Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks and Peter Gabriel were in my house at school.
Me too.
footage like this gives us a good perspective how technical Phil's drumming really was back then.
truly something to behold.
He plays on Another Green World with Brian Eno - phenomenal 👍🏻👍🏻
What a place the internet is, seeing the soundtrack to my life being rehearsed all these years later in some random room, when they are now old and retired.
We were incredibly fortunate to have been around in the time of this band, and the other greats. It won't happen again.
I could watch Phil drumming all day, so relaxed and yet vital.
This is great, Phil has got groove and feel in bucket loads, just love his playing.
this is such a gem makes you wonder how much unseen stuff is knocking around
So beautifully played. There's something about the way Phil plays. Such great sound plus tasteful fills. Nothing but respect for Phil and Genesis. Already miss them.
It's like Genesis visits and starts playing your living room.
The best rock drum duo in history.
I saw Genesis on the Trick of the Tail tour with Bill Bruford on drums with Collins , and they were equally as good as a duo .
Bruford and Thompson ( who I also saw play live several times with Genesis ) play differently , but they were both great with Genesis . Cheers !
complete rubbish
Agreed. How many are there??? Lol...
by far the best rock drum duo. I actually didnt like Bruford with Genesis. He is a fantastic drummer no doubt but not as great a fit like Chester.
Phil in Genesis - precision, every note thought out and perfectly placed. Phil in Brand X - fury, fire, playing to the moment. Glad I've lived to see both.
I saw Chester in a drum clinic in 92. Good stuff.
Thank you so much for uploading this video! So dang cool. I just listened to this live album for the 1000th time on my drive back from Southern California this weekend. It never gets old.
"Selling England..." is in my top 10.
PC’s drumming is a testament to the idea that few, very cleverly placed notes, is the way to go. When you actually see what he’s playing versus what you imagine when you just listen to the music it’s clear that it sounds much more complex than it is. Masterful!
One of the most musical drummers to ever do it. Makes odd time signatures flow so well. I listen to Lamb more for his drumming than anything else.
He's not playing the recorded version here.
You just realize how great a musician is as soon as you dare try to imitate them and you end up swimming in sweat in spite of not being able to hit one note in time and they just can do all that without breaking a single drop of sweat😅 God bless Genesis! What a band!🙌🙌🙌🙌
Chester, oh Chester. You ARE the backbeat, you master! My respects to you!
We love you Phil! Hope you are doing well! Thomas, Mississippi, USA!!
So so great to see the band cooking their stuff before the tour. And those amazing drum shots.. oh boy 🥹. Phil & Chester are pure gold. Thanks sooo much for sharing this piece of history!! Greetings from Argentina!🇦🇷
This stuff is epic! Thx who ever gives up their collecting over all these years! They truly are an amazing band.
I could literally watch this all day. It's so sad what happened between Phil and Chester.
What happened?
Just curious here, what did it happen ?
Phil needs to get on the phone before it's too late. What a waste, after such a shining partnership.
@@LThill-ks2uzThere was some falling out maybe in live rehearsals that Chester supposedly wasn't quite 100% on the job at some point or that Chester felt that Phil blamed him and gave him dirty looks for everytime there was a missed beat in a rehearsed song. Something like that. Maybe around 2010?
When Phil was recording and rehearsing for the Motown covers album 'Going Back' in 2010, Chester had some issues with getting some of the drumming down. Phil wanted the songs to be done exactly like the originals, and was being very demanding of Chester about it. Phil was already suffering from nerve damage and had spinal surgery. I think Phil wanted Chester to handle the drumming on the album and subsequent small tour (only 6 shows), but it just wasn't working out. They had a falling out over it.
The drummers transition between The Musical Box and Firth of Fifth is so good!
What's the track Firth of Fifth transitions into? I know I know it!!! That amazing crash-ride piggybacking, class Collins
@@advancedwindowandguttercle685 In the medley is I Know What I Like. Before it it's Musical Box ending
1:04 What an awesome fill/transition into “Firth Of Fifth!” I’ve replayed this countless times already!
for real.. that's bad ass...
I never liked Genesis much but I enjoyed this video for showing their raw musicianship. Very nice.
ok, ok...
How can you... not like Genesis?
Do you have ears?
Awesome stuff. Watching both Phil and Chester is an absolute delight!
Mike what a bass player!!!
Nic and Phil look very similar, didn’t realise how much until seeing this. Absolute legend as are the whole Genesis crew.
amazing band in rehersal sound, such a smoothness... love everytime
I played all of it the hard way until VIDEO happened, yeah I'm old. When I was able to see how he played it became a little easier. Brilliant style.
Great post.
My true inspiration right there. I love playing along to Genesis music on my kit. ❤
This basically was impossible to pause. What a treasure, thanks for sharing this
Wow!!!!!!!! So professional. Incredible. I wish PC still.could play like this. Thanks for uploading
Very sad to see his condition now 😢
And there we have it. If anyone ever wondered if Phil Collins was actually a very good drummer,
Yes, he is.
No one who knows music ever wondered.
Nobody ever wondered. Just you, it seems.
@@Frontdesk99I know a good few younger people who didnt even know Phil was a drummer so🤷♂️
Very good? One of the greatest in the world
He was great, and this does not actually show it. This is the tip of the iceberg I think. If give him credit for being a great drummer from a technical standpoint AND making a ton of money on pop music.
Thanks for sharing this great rehearsal footage…an example of how great artists work hard at their craft, many misconceptions about rock musicians, “it don’t come easy…”
More, please, more!
This is absolutely gorgeous, one of my favourite parts from that show (and in the final recording this bit sounds just stunning and powerful), thank you Tony!
1992 was just yesterday 😎
Yes this is gold watching the performers practicing before the concert 🎵. Thank you Genesis for their music.Thank you for posting it to
Love it. Miss those days.
Phil rocks on the drums.
Great video. This video makes you Appreciate Chester and Phil. Classic example of “in the pocket jam”. The drum fills during the Firth of Fifth jam are now legendary Iconic. We were blessed to have witnessed such talent, and lived during these times.
Fantastic…..you could almost imagine the caretaker walking in and telling them he has to lock up now…..
Great to see this , thanks for posting. Must have been rehearsals ahead of the The Way We Walk tour.I was lucky to see them at Knebworth , never to be forgotten ,brilliant !
I’ve always been jealous of Phil’s touch - the guy is always just on it!
It was invisible…
Fantastic , I’m also amazed how incredible excellent good timekeepers both are 😮.
Phil is SO solid + nothing is rushed
This is briliant. Really briliant. One of the best- at this moment probably the best gem for fans Genesis in 2024. Huge shock that after 32 years showed this rehearsals. I hope that in future was next gems.
Enjoying Genesis masterpieces, from Tucson AZ 🏜
One of the great drummers of our time, and an all round great musician.
Well that was great to see that I felt like I was right there at the rehearsal I love Phil Collins great drummer
Just echoing the comments. Phil is a legend. That band is legendary and timeless. I as probably all you wished there was more footage. Oh to be a fly on the wall then.
Wow Chester using a horst link snare..I need this in.my arsenal..with my new Gregg keplinger 7x14 stainless steel..it's wonderful
probably the best band in the world, ever.
Im from germany, and I wasnt able to skip this fantastic piece of art! One if the most influential groups that existed! Thx for sharing!!
Phil looks so laid back when he’s drumming.
I've been a Genesis fan since '73 and have been playing guitar since '74.. I grew up on progressive rock, jazz fusion and hard rock. The other day, a drummer who I work with asked me, "Who is your favorite drummer?". I went completely blank for a few seconds and then said, "Phil Collins".
Phil & Chester - a great pairing.
God, Phil got such a hard time from the UK gutter press in the years after this.
Sending best wishes to him. ❤
Yes, and he took it to heart. Phil Collins is legendary.
Hello! From Sardinia 👋🏻, Italy!👋🏻 Genesis! Wonderful magical group!✌🏻
Saw the Phil Collins/Chester Thompson line up on the Seconds Out tour. A truly thrilling gig - the interplay between Collins & Thompson was a wonder to both see and hear.
Being a professional acoustic drummer for many moons I sincerely appreciate this! Thank you!😊
That´s a gem.
What a fabulous band. Collin’s is an all-time talent. Few bands could make the change from pure prog to prog/rock hybrid to rock in the 90s that this superb band was able to effect.
The Old Medley........I was privileged to see this tour in '92
I can listen to this every day, no have to listen/watch every day. 1 of the best pieces i have seen from genesis
Wow, great footage. Collins was so effortless in his playing of odd times, etc. Chester is no slouch himself!
Chester IS a Masterclass drummer who happens to cover Phill’s @$$. A drummer’s drummer.
Not growing up a Genesis fan, I really had no idea of their virtuosity (I grew up in the 80's when they were more mainstream) but Gdamn! Phil Collins is a truly incredible talent not only in front of the kit, but behind it. He really can do it all.
Thank you TONY MENARD ! great document !
Thank you for uploading ☺️
Great video. Three sides live was one of my favorites and in '86 I saw my first drum clinic w/ Chester Thompson. While waiting outside in cold, Michigan weather we heard somebody playing drums. Being mischievous teens we found an open side door and snuck up to the mezinine balcony and got to witness Chester warming up. Sounds silly as I type this, but as a young kid eager to learn everything drums, it was the coolest thing!🤙
Really enjoy this! Thanks for posting it!😊
Amazing to see the kit with those toms with the bottom skins removed and get to hear that iconic drum sound so many of us grew up with. Thanks for posting this!
Magnificent. Thank you. Can never get enough of this stuff.
Phil Collins, my favorite drummer of all time.
Uma pena eu nunca ter ido a um show do Genesis. Para mim os melhores de todos os tempos. Música para eternidade, não canso de ouvir nunca. Sempre uma emoção e uma nova descoberta, mesmo sendo uma ouvida centenas de vezes.
Love it! Genesis legends and awesome drummers phill n Chester.. brilliant footage 👏 👌
I have to admit growing up I never knew the "Voice of the 80's" was such a phenomenal drummer until I started to get into more prog music in the late 80s.
That peace of selling England by the Pound, magnificant album, loved it immidiatly
I love the crack of that Noble and Cooley snare!
Phil and Chester=GOAT
Just shows how great Tony Banks is. He really colours the Genesis sound.
Everything about this video is so good!
It's wild to see such raw footage. Nice to see those drums sound amazing without fx too.
This is simply magical thanks for posting
I can watch this all day. Ty ty for posting this.
I'm in upper state NY
Saw them twice. A great drum duel ever. And a great band
This is amazing. Thank you!
The drum duel/solo that Phil and Chester did in May 1980 at Maple Leaf Gardens was beyond amazing.
Peak time for
Pure drum sound and a true lesson in generosity.
I’m fascinated by the different approach between the drummers in how they set up the angle of their toms. Phil’s are angled so forward. Wow…
What an amazing bit of footage; I used to live in Chiddingfold around that time and used to see the huge trucks pull up with fat cables trailing everywhere like spaghetti - I did sneak in once for a nose around but I think they were all down the crown for lunch!! Not sure how regularly they booked the place for rehearsals being local lads, but when I saw them there it was more late 80's.
For drum nerds: Chester with the immortal drumKat (left of kit), a device which today, 30+ years later, is still the most powerful midi drum controller ever manufactured. I'm still using mine (the 3.5 version) and still haven't utilized even a fraction of its potential!!!
He's also got a malletKat, which Neil Peart and countless other drummers used - and are still using!
Thanks for mentioning that. I wasn’t sure what that was. I also was not aware Phil still had the Simmons kit mixed with his standard (for Home by the Sea?)
And Tony Banks has a Kit Kat (left of synth) ready for lunchtime. 😜
Coolest thing I’ve seen on CZcams this year!!
IMHO Phil is the best *overall* popular musician of all time. You can make arguments about who's a better drummer, singer, songwriter, etc. but I defy you to find anyone who can do all of the above at such a high level.
Yeah buddy 👍
