Mercedes-Benz AMG E53 Cabrioilet 4Matic+ Test Review

Motoring journalists tend to claim to be purists, always chasing greater performance, better handling and more luxury. Many also prefer big engines instead of downsized turbo’s and modern hybrid assistance or similar.
Personally, I love to be different. Cabriolets or convertibles are my weakness whereas the purists would always choose the coupe option for better handling. Those who know me will understand my yearning for the wind in my hair experience.
Enter the E53 cabriolet…….a luxury 4 seater open top dream machine that combines all that is great in my motoring world. Luxury, class, quality, drop-top roof, all-wheel drive for better roadholding. Then comes the ace card, this particular car features the new 53 motor from Mercedes AMG.
The 3L straight 6 engine and suspension were designed and developed by AMG, built by Mercedes. The 336kW and 520Nm are achieved with the assistance of thoroughly modern hybrid assistance that provides overboost in extreme conditions. All this power is then transmitted through a 9 speed automatic gearbox that, of course, offers selectable drive modes. Comfort mode is for cruising and you may never feel a gearchange happen…….BUT select Sport+ and it all happens. Thumps, Pops and Bangs accompany every shift, up or down. I had a silly grin on my face every time I used this.
Sadly, nothing is ever totally perfect in the world though. I still absolutely dislike the stalk on the steering column for the gear selector. In various Mercedes cars I’ve found myself engaging neutral instead of indicating a lane change!!!!!! Taller drivers than myself may also find that they compromise rear legroom when setting the perfect, electrically adjustable, seat for the ideal driving position.
The list price of R1.44 million buys a vehicle that would certainly satisfy my requirements and could meet the need for everyday use as well.
