'Last ever' News at Ten (5/3/99)

- The last ever News at Ten from Friday, 5th March, 1999 - until they brought it back, of course. But that doesn't mean that this wasn't something of a televisual event when it was broadcast, and the top stories befitting the occasion are Bill Clinton wishing Monica Lewinsky well; informants in the Stephen Lawrence case being moved after their names were made public; and an E. coli outbreak in Cumbria.
The history of this, in case you're wondering, is that ITV felt the BBC had an unfair advantage in the scheduling stakes, with a clear run after the Nine O'Clock News versus not being able to fit in a post-watershed film without News at 10 getting in the way. ITV's solution? Make the early evening news the main bulletin, and then it's Kavanagh QC and The Grimleys to your heart's content until a new 11pm news programme.
Anyway, other smaller stories Trevor McDonald brings us on this historic night include the passing of centenarian Lord Denning; Robin Cook being on the receiving end of government leaks; a banana trade war, and more. But the main event of part two is definitely the end montage which looks back at memorable stories carried by News at 10 from its start in 1967 over its 32-year lifespan. See how many you can identify.
This recording also includes full ad breaks, promos, and the following weather forecasts and London Tonight local news bulletin. You can use the chapters to skip to the bits you want, if they see fit to work.

I'd have been just about to turn 19. Seems a lifetime ago, and yet maybe just last year or so. I'm a middle aged man now about to turn 44. Our perception of time is hard to reconcile with reality.
It hurts how much I identify with this comment.
I know mate, I know. I feel the pain.@@VideotapeFTW

@@ProCelebrityBogies12345 I'm afraid I don't have those - sorry.
Trevor McDonald is now new gamemaster
Yeah, I saw that - certainly an unexpected career move! I wish they'd made more episodes.
He's in those odd recent Mcvities adverts too... can't say I associated him much with biscuits before them, but here we are
@@VideotapeFTW I never seen new gamemaster but Patrick Moore is best gamesmaster
I'm pretty sure the voice on the Daily Mail ad at the start is Andrew Burt who was also the voiceover during the News at Ten intro. This really was the end of an era, as it was also the last time the news was billed under ITN.
Good catch - I think you're right.
25 years ago this month 😲😲😯
Wow! It really is a miracle we can retrieve these vintage videos! Truly a part of television history (sorta)
I recorded it, but I never thought it survived but well...Here we are. :)
I never thought that this survived of all things?! But well, yes, I recorded it because at the time we all thought it was going to be the last ever News at Ten, well it was the last one in this format anyway. :D Now I might be mistaken, but perhaps the first ever ITV Early Nighty News that replaced this was also recorded, but I'm not sure 100%. At least this survived though. :)
Yeah, it was on the same tape. :-) I'll be uploading it very soon. Thanks again!
@@VideotapeFTW For some reason I thought it may have been on the same tape. Interesting. :) Thanks again for uploading this. :)
25 years ago ! How did that happen !?
Friday 5th March 1999
1/4 century ago 😮.
rip news at 10 1967 - 1999 or is it❓
The ghosting on this tape is really bad.
Yep. Although (to be pedantic) it's not the tape that's the problem, but the reception at the time.
Same issue plagues a lot of my tapes as I was using a poor aerial in a very built-up area, London itself.
@@David315842 But like I always say, better to have a bit of an iffy recording than no recording at all. So thanks for preserving your tapes!
@@VideotapeFTW No problem. I'm grateful that you and several others are enjoying the content, despite the poor quality. :) And thank you for continuing to upload these. :)
