My Dad had stage 4 lung cancer that had spread to his brain and he is now cancer free. It was just amazing he was in hospice, we were prepared to lose him and then he started to get better and better with the treatment. Finally the hospice nurse was like 'um hey you look like you are getting better maybe you should contact your doctor'. She was right he came out of hospice and has been cancer free for almost a year now. Stay strong and positive!

The treatment my Dad was on is Keytruda. He was 83 when diagnosed and it took some time to kick in. He was told that Keytruda acts like a key that searches to unlock the solution to reversing the cancer. Once its does this and the body is compatible with the drug the results can be tremendous. My Dad tested in the high percentile for compatibility and that was a blessing beyond belief.

I understand exactly what you mean about not being ready to be a “cancer person.” It’s the club you didn’t want to join.
I watch for your videos and pray for you both. Some of my questionable pathology was sent to the Mayo Clinic from where I live in Central PA. I felt very grateful to have that level of care for just me. You can rest in the knowledge that you are in the best hands in the world. Traveling mercies and love.

In 2006 we were very fortunate to go for a 2nd opinion to Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN.
Back home in NY, my husband was told he had weeks to live but Mayo changed all that. You were right on when you said Mayo looks like a Resort of some kind. The Doctors are Amazing and they have the latest and best medical equipment and technology ANYWHERE!!!!.
My husband's PET scan, And MRI that were so carefully packed in our suitcases in what looked like a CD given to us in NY were both thrown in the waste basket by the Mayo Doctors that saw them.
Needless to say my husband is doing very well, we do go to Mayo every Year since 2006 and we make a mini vacation out of it. We were actually there this July from the 25th to the 27th.
When we 1st went to Mayo my husband was 49 years old when he was told in NY the awful news that he was dying... Today he is 65 years old and a Grandfather to 3 wonderful children ❤.
Never give up, will be Praying 🙏🏻for your well being and cure.
    Best wishes,
    Lina

Jessica, I know exactly how you feel. I didn't want to be apart of the cancer community either. I was diagnosed with stage 3 uterine cancer. My oncologist said this phrase to me...Don't let cancer define you. We're here to help you get rid of it and go on with your life. That was 10 years ago and I'm still doing great. Hang in there...your attitude is what really makes the biggest difference in your recovery!

Jessica, when I first found out I had diabetes I didn't tell anyone. I was hardly in denial since I was the one who noted the symptoms and went to the drugstore to get a test, and THEN called my health care plan with the results. But I was not ready to ... I don't know how to articulate it. I was a person who was dealing with diabetes, sure, but being a diabetic seemed different. Sort of like I had given in to it. So your comment about not being ready mentally to belong to the "cancer group" seems really healthy to me. You also are not in denial, very proactive about what you need to do, and also cognizant that while success is not guaranteed you are laser focused on overcoming your condition, on becoming cancer free. All of us who have been watching your channel are rooting for you, and we see you as a winner! Sending you both hugs and much love.

I've come to know Rochester Mayo well. My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer a year ago and he's now in remission, thanks to his wonderful team at Mayo! They give you hope when you need it most. I understand exactly what you're going through- I remember feeling like we were actors in a play. You get through, one day at a time. We're now in another chapter of this cancer fight. There's no denying the uneasy rhythm between the rechecks every three months. But, we've managed to compartmentalize the cancer in a way and live our lives. Remember, the cancer isn't who you are! My very best wishes to you both and prayers for healing!

I get the "I don't wanna be in this club" feeling. The whole week Bob was in the hospital we heard snippets of conversation from various other patients who were "regulars" on the cancer floor. Once we left and had to return for a hormone shot, we sat with people coming in for chemo, and I just didn't want to be the caregiver of someone fighting cancer. Sending out a big shout out to Brian from PA -- Jessica so damn lucky to have such a strong support and advocate in you!! Thanks for the update, and keep fighting!

I had cancer too, but stage 1, no chemo or radiation, so I never felt part of the cancer community. However, I DO feel part of the community that suffers from side effects of the surgery I had. This surgery is done for non-cancer reasons too. Feel what you feel, no explanations necessary!

    • @gailclaypool9482
      @gailclaypool9482 Před 2 lety +4

I had endometrial cancer, stage 1, 5 years ago. I had a hard time accepting saying the words I have cancer even after my surgery. I believe at first it was denial, then after surgery I was relieved no chemo or radiation, but I felt guilty that I did not have to have it while other people I knew had to go through it. My neighbor had gone through stage 4 brain cancer the year before and he beat it. He gave me the strength to understand that I had cancer and that I could beat it no matter the stage. Finally after my first year that I would say the word cancer. I am happy that your first meeting with your doctor went so well. You are in the best hands to get you through this time of your life. Your hubby is really a rock for you and you are very lucky to have him and for him to have you. What a great couple you two are. Bless you both.

My family and I have A LOT of experience with cancer of different types. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 8 years ago, had a double mastectomy and cancer treatments (which was harrowing at best). The oncologist told me he could cure me of cancer. My family experience up to that time gave me good reason to doubt that he could do it but I am hear to tell you it has been 8 years and I have not had any more cancer show up during this time. I totally understand your feelings about how surreal it all is and not wanting to think your are part of the group that is seriously affected by cancer. People wanted me to be part of the cancer club in my hometown. I said no, I didn't want to live my life for cancer, or in other word cancer would not be my whole focus for the rest of my life. I refuse to let cancer hang over me. If it comes back again I will deal with it then. Now I am cancer free and getting on with life. Also I can tell you there have been new treatments that actually stop cancer tumor growth and even make it disappear even though the cancer has been really deadly until now. If you are going to have cancer show up, this is a good time for treatments. You can have lots of hope that when you get past cancer upending everything, you will be able to carry on with a healthy life.

HA, I put Mirelax in my coffee every morning...works like a charm and can't taste it and there is no consistency change. My mother who had both breast and lung (is fine now and has been cancer free for years) NEVER identified as a cancer patient either...never went to any groups, never participated in anything cancer related except at her cancer center as it relates to the other patients. What I mean by that is she would pray with them and entertain them while they all were thee getting their treatment but that is it. She just chose not to ever let it be a part of her identity in any way shape or form. It was her choice and I think some who have cancer do participate and it's part of their cancer journey and healing and some patients never do. I say do what you feel led to do when you feel led to do it. I think there are many many people who never do for a myriad of reasons. We are continuing to pray daily for your healing and recovery. 🥰 #staylifted

My daughter worked for the cancer center and after 5 years had to leave. She fell in love with her patients and couldn't take it once they were no longer there. Welcome to Rochester! I’ve followed you for recipes for quite a while. I’m an RN at the clinic and it was so helpful to hear your initial impressions and experience of your visit to the clinic. Thank you so much for being open and sharing what can be overwhelming and scary. Those of us that live and work here strive to remember that the whole experience can be super disconcerting for patients when they visit. We’re used to the size of it. But our patients aren’t and we really try to make things as streamlined as possible knowing that it’s A LOT to take in, especially when you’re also trying to process a recent diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan. Nobody comes to the Clinic for fun. But, I’m glad to hear the initial experience was positive. I wish you the best in your journey with us. Be well and keep on keeping on!

I am 1.5 years out from diagnosis and 1 year out from being done with chemo and I am the same way. I’m so happy that others have found the cancer community and find comfort in the “I’m a survivor” mentality but I see it as a sickness I had and am now healthy and it’s no longer a part of me. I was able to get through it by just considering it like any other disease that can be treated and moved on from. Everyone is different and how you need to treat it to get through it is all that matters.

The day after my cancer surgery the oncologist came by and told me the cancer board, which consists of the finest minds in the country, was reviewing my case to determine the next phase of my treatment. I was dumbfounded that the finest cancer minds in the country had time for me, so many cases of cancer in the US and they knew about me?! Anything you feel is valid Jessica. So happy that you are able to be treated in this incredible facility and glad to know Brian got a nap. Was a bit worried about him driving that far without one after such an overwhelming day 😁. This was a big hump to get over but now you are past the first day, it should be more manageable for you both. I never left my home town with my breast cancer but still experienced much of what you are going through. Sending love and prayers for strength and healing to you both.

If love could cure cancer, you wouldn’t need Mayo. The love you share radiates and is so apparent to anyone watching your videos. Please know that I am praying for both of you. Brian, you need to find a support team for caregivers. I’ve been there, I know. It’s not selfish to ask for help too. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Take time to smell the flowers! God bless you both.

Please, you must realize from the pathology you reported, it’s a neuroendocrine cancer specialist you must see. There’s an excellent one at Mayo, Dr. Thor Halvdanarson. I’m an RN and cancer patient and I know about this. I care about you guys and it would break my heart if you don’t get this right. Besides a CT, you will need an abdominal MRI as well as a Ga68 scan. I don’t want you to have to wait and come back again just to get the necessary tests

Jessica, when I went through cancer treatment I also felt the same way about support groups. I never did join a support. Now that I am on the other end I find myself being supportive to others but just didn't feel a need for a group for myself, at the time. I get it.

Yes, Mayo is all about the team work. Even before my routine colonoscopy, my gastro doctor was in an early morning meeting with their gastro team that included doctors attending from other cities through Zoom. My procedure was at 7:30am and they all met together to discuss every patient having this procedure for the day so that every doctor can read over the cases and discuss their opinions on each person. He was a little late starting the procedure but by less than 20 minutes. It is reassuring that so many top notch doctors have the opportunity to provide input on your individual case. Everything is world class. You don't realize how crappy some hospitals can be until you go to a top notch facility!

I so agree! We are fortunate to live just two hours away. Just being at Mayo gives you a feeling of calm in the storm, that they've got you! My husband's oncologists are not only at the top of their game, but so kind! I can't imagine facing any life-threatening illness (or any illness, for that matter) without their expertise and care.

My story is that I wasn’t ready to be in the widow’s club. My story is that I’m not wanting to be in the Cancer club. I was 72 yrs old when I was diagnosed with Lymphoma/Leukemia, that was November 2020. One year after my husbands diagnosis of Pulmonary Fibrosis, he also suffered from CHF, Diabetes. I was his caregiver 24/7. When I got my diagnosis I prayed for strength to take care of him. I’m what they call watch and wait no treatment yet. I’m monitored every 3 months, labs, CT’s and Pet Scans. This past year has been a very challenging year. My Bobby suffered greatly. Was very hard to watch him and not be able to help him breathe. February and March he was in and out of the hospital. March 28, 2022 he came home to being on Hospice. He passed away 6 days later on April 3, 2022 😢. I had a three month checkup in June all labs good as was CT. Next appointment is Sept 13. After my diagnosis in 2020 the follow up appointment with Oncologist he said my lymph nodes had shrunk considerably. He measured each one. Sometimes I feel like I’m a time bomb waiting to go off. Doctor told me it doesn’t work that way. He said live my life try not to lose sleep over it. Easier said than done.
You two make a beautiful couple. I stumbled upon your channel during these last 4 months since my hubby passed. Continue to lean on each other, that will take you through this journey. Sending you my prayers positive thoughts. 🙏🏻💜🙏🏻

Your cancer community will provide so much support, even though they too are going through it. Some going through a really bad, no hope cancer. When my husband was at SCCA we met wonderful lifelong friends with our community. We all have a compassion and understanding no one else has who isn't going through it or has gone through it. Some for the second, third even fourth time. I wish my husband had chosen the Mayo Clinic, but he chose Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. I feel had he chosen Mayo he'd still be with me. I'm so glad you are there. Please accept your new community with open arms, they get it.

Your case may already have been reviewed by a tumor board before you got there. Mine was at Cleveland Clinic. Multiple surgeons, pathologists, radiation oncology, diagnostic radiology, medical oncology all have a hand in this. Then there is their support staff. Later on you may need the services they offer to caregivers for support. You will find at this level they do things differently. At this facility, the doctors have always been in charge, not non-medical hospital administrators. It's a big medical group practice. I'll be passing on your tip of mixing apple juice with Miralax to the colorectal cancer group who has an unusual interest in this topic. Keep a positive mental attitude.

We are 1 year in on treatment for my husband (prostate cancer). After talking with the oncologist today, my husband is looking at 2 more years of something or other in connection with the treatment. Fortunately, my husband is not in pain. I totally get not wanting to think about being a patient. I do believe that it is important to feel as normal as possible. Maybe some would call it denial, but I view it as being your whole entire unique and authentic self. Being on on the side Brian sits (twice now, once as care taker for my mom and now my husband) I know how stressful it is (I have lost a set of car keys, the cord to charge our lone phone, etc.) You are both in great hands with the team. Praying for the most benevolent outcome.
