Otis pie plate selector on an express elevator

  • Here's an old Otis "pie plate" selector in operation. The selector is the "road map" for the elevator. It controls speed, direction, deceleration, stopping, door opening, even directional arrow control. You can see the mechanism with all of the leveling switches lift to clear the floor plates as the elevator runs. As it comes into a floor, it drops to activate the circuits at they touch the plates. This selector is driven by a steel tape that is connected directly to the elevator cab. The other end of the tape is connected to either the bottom of the car or the top of the counterweight.
These are very complicated machines. Modern elevator equipment removes all of this and uses a much simpler and much more reliable selector. Some use lasers, others use a stationary tape and readers mounted on the car to report location. Other use an absolute encoder that has accuracy down to a few thousands of an inch and they never get "lost."

I worked with these on installation and service for over 40 years but never tired of seeing them working.
The advancer panel seeking out the floor with the "hot contact" governed the speed that the machine ran up to and then closed back down for the slow down. On a short run there’s not enough distance to get up to full speed.

Nice! Old stuff definitely better to watch than the new

Awesome mechanism, thanks for documenting this interesting equipment. The new replacements won't last as long as these devices.

I spent almost 7 years servicing these floor selectors. While I understand how they work, they are a bazillion% over-complicated.

Are you saying they could of been of a simpler design. There is a lot of stuff going on with these things.

@@anthonyboarman3833 Yes, I am saying that. As a seasoned electrical engineer, I can assure you that there is.

Do you guys know how if there is an adjusters manual available? I’m working on a few right now and any available information would be amazing.

A teacher reminded us students one night, that this was designed during a time when people were experimenting with LSD quite a bit. Many will not fully understand this unless they experience it. It makes so much sense....

@@johnnymitz Not a chance at the time these were designed. This was start of the art technology in the industry.

Are you going to replace these or just work on them?

mi2tn, These machines are slated to be modernized soon. It won't be long before the only evidence remaining will be videos such as this.
