    I really appreciated your thoughts on this one man. I've been hoping for a reaction/breakdown from you for a long time now and I was really pleased when it finally happened :)
    I think you pretty much nailed it on how it's supposed to make you feel, etc. A quick google search and this is what I got regarding the meaning and influence, etc.
    The song title is perhaps a reference to a quote by Edgar Allan Poe:
    "That pleasure which is at once the most pure, the most elevating and the most intense, is derived, I maintain, from the contemplation of the beautiful."
    Frank Sacramone comments that the composition of the song was centered around the idea that beauty is sadness. The song is a personification of the anxiety that he felt when he was younger towards how he desired beauty.
    The track was recorded at a faster tempo and then was slowed down in production. This was done to produce a “pulling down” feeling to focus on the power of the emotions from the song.
    I've been obsessed with this song for about a year now, all my friends/family are sick of it by now :P
    Anywho, next up is Periphery - Jetpacks was yes 2.0 :)

      @CriticalReactions  Před 3 lety +1

      Cool, I was pretty close to the meaning! And that decision to get the songs tempo digitally rather than in the performance is interesting. I might have to try that one day.
      As for Periphery, I've heard Jetpacks V2 and I like some parts and prefer V1 in others. It's an interesting rendition though and I'm glad it exists. But a lot of people have requested it so maybe I'll try to do something with that song somehow.

    I couldn't be happier that you chose to react to this specific song because it's really one of my favorite ever ! Even though I don't listen to it too often cause it's sooo emotional and my heart can't take it lol
    But yeah the first time I heard it I fell in love, even without knowing what the song it about lyrically, you can really feel the emotion, I felt the same "sadness of beauty" feeling from it. And the "heavy" parts are so intense and overwhelming, I love it. I was immediatly fascinated by the singer's voice too, all the different textures he can use, and yeah, the really raw emotion coming from it.
    I know you probably have a lot of other recommendations, and I don't know if other people have ever heard of it, but I'd still recommend a band called "toe". It's japanese instrumental math rock, but the song I like the most has a guest singer on it. It's called "グッドバイ" ("goodbye") feat. Toki Asako and it's really beautiful, so... if you're interested you can take a look !

    Nice reaction, Bryan! You pretty well nailed the mood, that this song provokes in me! The mingled sadness/beauty is something I've often tried to put into words, especially when it comes to watching landscapes ("Contemplating the beautiful"?!). It is so much of a controversy between admiration of a view (the beauty of nature, its power, its complexity) and the wish to be like "closer" to it, grab it, embrace it, and on top acknowledging that you can NEVER reach that state. Anyone gets what I mean? :D Loved the song! Saw these guys supporting Leprous, too and heard the album a few times, but they were a bit under my radar since then.
    The intro/outro very much reminded me of desert panorama pictures that I've experienced myself a few times. So that mood captured me right from the beginning! Nice one!

    I'm so glad you did this song. Its very hard for me to explain whats about this song that makes me so emotional. Goosebumbs every single time.
    This whole album is amazing in my opinion, but Dream in static or The Ungrounding could be ones to try next : >

    This album is very interesting as the band itself does not have a vocalist and there's a different guest vocalist for each song with vocals on the album, which I think might be around half of them. I appreciate this song and think it works great as an album closer, but I personally prefer some of the other songs on the album to this one. I also wouldn't call this an unknown gem, but the band deserved a reaction so I'm glad we got one.

  • @paravarium
    @paravarium Před 3 lety +2

    I love this band so much. I would have to fall under suggesting Crater first, just because it has that ultra accessible, yet well composed ideal I strive for when I make a first suggestion for a band. I'm sure plenty others will comment that this band is instrumental with guest vocals, but I haven't read yet so here's that again lol.

    Earthside does cinematic music really well. Check 'Crater' where they employ Björn Strid, the singer from Soilwork, one of the mightiest voices in metal today.
    By the way, where's Be'lakor? You promised!!!!

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  Před 3 lety +2

      I apologize for not getting to Be'lakor sooner. There are a ton of videos that I need to get around to ("true" Anathema Doom Metal, Necrophagist, The Ocean's latest single) and I just haven't had the time. I've skipped on the personal selection of videos that I used to do for Sundays because I simply don't have the time to do them. :( At the moment I'm crunching pretty hard just to get these 7 videos out every week.

    • @alexandergatos2159
      @alexandergatos2159 Před 3 lety +1

      @@johanliljeblad1236 Where should I start? Venator is great, with a powerful opening riff. It would be a great choice. I actually like all of their songs, there's so much to unpack from every song, each has its own majesty. Still, if I had a choice I'd go for either Countless Skies, a paean particularly to Aussie metalheads, or The Smoke Of Many Fires for its lyrics, pace and staggering outro riffs. That's one for the ages!

  • @jonathanhenderson9422
    @jonathanhenderson9422 Před 3 lety +1

    I have actually heard of these guys, but never heard them. Beginning ambient part reminded me a lot of DT's Octavarium, and when the metal part kicked in it reminded me of a heavier Leprous. I think the best aspects are the emotion and atmosphere, though I do wish the musical content was a bit more interesting... not necessarily more complex, but it seems occasionally like an awkward mix of cinematic mood music that would transition into rather dull metal parts that would disrupt the mood. Seems like this is from the band's first and only album. Definitely a lot of promise, especially if they refine their musicianship and songwriting.
