  • What happens when we take some NHL young stars, like Jordan Eberle, Jake Gardiner and Morgan Rielly out of their comfort zones, and give them good old fashioned wooden sticks?

    Gretzky was actually one of the first players to start using the new sticks. The old two piece grey aluminum. that then led to the one piece synergy and that yellow TPS stick. The technology in sports now is amazing

    Wooden twigs!! I STILL rock the wood. You get an unsurpassed feeling through the twig with Passes and handles. Shooting power is stifled a bit, but oh the feels.. And for $35 a pop vs. $200+ you cant go wrong. Because guess what, all sticks eventually break!

  • @glenn2494
    @glenn2494 Před 6 lety +12

    I used wooden sticks back in the day because that’s all there was. You really can’t get a good comparison. That Sherwood stick they are using doesn’t compare with quality of wooden sticks from the past (late 70’s early 80’s). The older wooden stick had a lot of fiberglass laminates on top to strengthen them. The best ones actually had a good shot. Because wood has a lot of variation, not every stick even from the same manufacturer was the same. Carbon sticks are a lot more consistent.

  • @MrDUBMACK
    @MrDUBMACK Před 6 lety +7

    Wood sticks allow you to "feel" the puck much more on your blade when stick handling, but you do have to put more into your shots. The composites give you a hella wristy off your off foot tho, a shot that didn't really work as well back in the day with the woodys.

      HeavyER I think is what he was saying.
      Watch hreat stick handlers like Mcdavid or Patrick Kane, the stick moves from one side of the puck to the other so fast you can hardly see it.
      That extra weight throws off the overcoming of inertia just enough to throw off a person who has used a composite stick for their whole life, and has played thousands of games and practices.

    switched to composites in 2006 because i had my hands smashed with a car door and heavier sticks made my life a living hell. I still miss the feel of wood sticks. I used Montreal Lite pro stocks and they were amazing, X-Tra Stiff with a P88-ish style curve. Light that net up for days.

    Used wooden sticks in high school for laughs and I graduated 10 years ago Easton z carbon loved them not really heavy could still shoot amazing with it they just broke too much for me being a old stick and probably the wood was too dry I eventually bought all 14 of them in the store after I liked the 1st soo much I believe they cost 20 or 30 dollar's each didn't think I would like it as much as I did and people that didn't know me would be like a wood stick really then they see me shoot the puck and then it turned into he shooting like that with a wood stick lol also found handling the puck and catching passes where easier compared to a composite blade and just a better feel overall would have bought more but couldn't find them anywhere only store that had them was decathlon sports lol

    I am a huge hockey fan but I never played highly competitive hockey when I was young, so maybe someone can answer this for me. Wouldn't shooting with a heavier stick strengthen your shot when you go back to composite? Not using it all the time, but using it as kind of an exercise to help out.

    • @bailey4666
      @bailey4666 Před 8 lety

      Although that seems like a good idea I'm pretty sure competitive players want to use the same stick game and practice that way they get a great feel for it, getting use to the flex, weight and the overall feel for their shot is really important that way they don't have to adjust half way through a game

    • @connorreviere4306

    • @Ken-re3kh
      @Ken-re3kh Před 8 lety

      +d barnett It would "strengthen" you, but you have to break your shot down to physics. Very small changes can totally destroy the speed and accuracy of your shot. So they'd be "stronger" but using weighted implements have a tendency to mess up your motor patterns.

    I really have to say that this is absolutely pitiful. It's so funny how Canadians pride themselves I'm being so much better because hockey is in their blood and yada yada yada. But somehow even they have produced a generation of soft handed wusses. I grew up with true hockey legends as my heroes, and I would go into the woods, search long and hard, for a tree branch, which was the right size and angle, to be carved by hand into a hockey stick. I made a few of those, and used and treasured and wore out all of them. Yard sale skates, thrift shop gloves....ponds in winter - street in summer...Sure, I eventually graduated to "real" store-bought sticks, but the thousands of shots I took with my hand carved ones are precious, all these years on...Anyway, the fact that kids today are able to turn their noses up at even the high end wooden sticks???? That's just sad.

    • @jmcavoy7
      @jmcavoy7 Před 8 lety +1

      They are used to composite sticks and I'm sure you would understand if you actually played hockey in today's world. Flexing of sticks is so much different now that it's a hard adjustment. It's more than just going out to the pond and shooting for these guys. They have used composite sticks for 15 years maybe more and so it's just that they are accustomed to it. Not everything is always going to be the same either. Time changes and things evolve. Hockey has just evolved into what you see today. Like it or not, things aren't going to go back to how they were.

    • @samuelluria4744

      Its just that hockey, more so than other sports, has always had an heir of tradition, and connection to the early greats. Its a sport where humility has always been valued, with a sense of playing in the shadows of the early ones... Other sports have given way to self aggrandizing behavior, with chest pounding after every slam dunk or touchdown...its one thing to note the unfamiliarity of the wooden sticks, but these guys seemed to think that those sticks were laughable, and were beneath them. The attitude just didn't seem right.

Everyone was complaining that the sticks are too heavy. Don't NHLers train like 24/7? These should by no means be heavy. I'm a scrawny 15 year old and I love wood sticks, especially for street hockey. In no way do I think they're too "heavy." My current stick for street hockey, an old Sheer-Wood 500, was purchased in great condition at a Goodwill for 3 dollars. A freaking Goodwill, and I have the most points on my street hockey team. This video really pissed me off because clearly without their 300 dollar sticks some NHLers wouldn't be crap
