Thanks! And wow! I'm not invested in the sims of this video, and yet all the drama happening on The Sims 2 carries a lot of emotional impact! They don't tell you how your sim is feeling, they SHOW you! I didn't know why I found The Sims 4 so boring, it's because nothing you do has real consequences, The Sims 2 has you at the edge of your seat for something terrible that could happen next, and I recall finding it so hard that I had to cheat with custom bushes that would give free money, but the difficulty made it awesome!

I lit someone's house on fire, there were basically no consequences, some stuff got kinda dirty, and the person was still good to hangout after. It's so boring. I also like to throw away people's food just because I can, and they're never upset about it.

the biggest thing that makes me unable to play ts4 is lack of direction from the sims themselves, the want system is too shallow. in the sims 3 I feel like my sims can tell me what they want to do, and that helps me play the game

    • @Sitycims

Totally, despite not having the best wants system out of the serie, TS3 had a pretty solid want mechanic that actually made sense with the choices of the player and the sims personalities. Whereas in TS4 it's very shallow & random...

The problem is that Sims 4 leaves everything up to the player. All under the hypocritical pretence of "freedom". Sims 4 is the best example of why endless freedom in games is not always a good thing.

Sims 4 was supposed to be an online game. After the Simcity fiasco in 2013 however they removed all the online elements which of course caused many problems, since the game was not designed as a single-player game.

I agree, in the sims 2 and 3 I always felt like every sim i played was telling me what they want out of their life and I was kind of the one to help them accomplish it and when ur a wants based played it really used to give sims individuality. But in the sims 4, the wants aren’t very personalized in my opinion and all kind of just the same across the board.

My biggest problem with Sims 4 is that it doesn't create interesting scenarios on its own, but when you actively try to make something interesting happen, the game does anything it can to sabotage what you're trying to do.
In my Sims 2 neighbourhood which I've created from scratch and have been playing for something like five generations, one of my sims, called James, married his childhood best friend Chloe. They had started dating as teens and were very close, they had two children together, but one day Chloe, who had romance as a secondary aspiration, autonomously started flirting with James' friend Tommy, also a romance sim. She then rolled a want to kiss him, so I let her and he liked it. He left before James got home from work, but Chloe rolled another want to woohoo with Tommy, so the next time when James went to work I had her call him over, but while they were in bed together, James got a chance card at work and was demoted, returned home and caught his wife and his friend in bed together. He divorced her, she moved out, but she was pregnant with Tommy's baby, so she asked him to marry her, but he refused and they haven't spoken since. She didn't have a job, so she had to start one at level one. She's making very little money and now has to raise her daughter Lindsey alone. All that drama, and I didn't plan any of it. I could have prevented it if I wanted to, I could have just left things at that one autonomous flirt and not fulfilled her other wants. But I let the game just take me for a ride, and it led to a great storyline. I'm already looking forward to finding out how Lindsey's life will turn out.
The Sims 4 would never start a storyline like this on its own, and if I tried to micromanage it to get the same story, I'd have to put in a lot of work to make her husband hate her, even after walking in on her woohooing his friend.

That person invited himself in, spent around 2 hours there being constantly harassed. Then said “thank you it was wonderful time”.
    It’s just not fun….

When you feel the need of explaining your comment why you've decided to make an evil character in a game obviously because you're afraid of someone else's thoughts about you, that makes it clear that it's something really wrong in this world. Do not explain yourself bro. You've made a bad character because you can and nobody have nothing to complain about it.

1:45 They’re destructive as hell too 😭 Having teens with low aspiration in a household is actually a nightmare. Stomping flowers to death, kicking over trash cans and causing roaches, randomly starting fistfights with closest friends/family and ruining perfectly good relationships, destroying lemonade stands and doll houses, ruining other people’s paintings, etc. It really makes you care about keeping their lives under control.

I never played Sims 2 but I love sims 3, and noticed some things:
Sometimes children get a want to "get mommy's/daddy's attention" if they don't interact much
Evil sims seem actually evil unlike ts4
Once I made my sims divorce in front of all their children and it kept them miserable for a few days, to tye point where the toddler refused to be potty trained out of sadness and cried when my teen tried to train him, I think it shows how much of an effect situations have on sims
I noticed that if a sim admits to cheating it's much harder to gain the relationship and the option to interact romantically back

In my recent save, my sim decided to marry the townie jared frio, who is mean spirited. he was surprisingly sweet with her, but would roll wishes to be mean to his brother and friends. and then when they had a kid, once he became a teen jared started rolling constant wishes to be mean to his own son! and when he became an elder he would start constantly autonomously being mean to his wife, it made it seem like he got meaner as he got older lol. and the fact that evil sims wish to see the ghosts of alive sims, even ones that they're really close to.
I also had a heartbreaker sim who started flirting with a guy while his wife and toddler kids were there too. and the toddlers ran across the park to witness the cheating and get upset and betrayed

I noticed Sims 3 also has negative outcomes for children and teens failing school, since they'll get a bad trait growing up. Also Sims aren't always willing to hang out and will tell you they can't talk if you call them while at work.
Also, if you have a bad relationship with a Sim, like person non-grata or enemy, no matter how much you try to be nice to them they'll always turn you down and try to fight you.

I know the wiki says that there's a higher chance of negative traits, but tbh unless I see a line of code saying that I'm going to assume it's simply confirmation bias - people expect it to be a worse trait, so they notice it more

One of my fav things abt Sims 2 are one-sided relationship. In TS4, Sims will have the same relationship level with each other and the dynamic thing doesn't really make things much better. But TS2? Unrequited love? One Sim being in love, while the other doesn't really care and leaves the 1st one at the altar? In Sims 2, it was so nice being able to see how Sims could react and do things according to their personality points. While there were only 5 sections for personalities, they all change the game in so many ways that I don't think that we have even discovered everything the personality system has to offer even 20 years after its release.
In Sims 3, it was fun being able to give sims a specific trait and seeing how they would use it in everyday activities, there were so many interactions locked behind each trait and I loved seeing how all of my sims reacted in different situations. Plus apparently with the base game traits alone, there are millions of possible unique sims you could make.
Meanwhile with Sims 4, the traits only affect the emotions and we all know how shallow that system is, every Sim's reactions and interactions is determined by their emotions which just ends up making everything feel so lifeless. This is also the reason why we have trait mods for Sims 4 but not Sims 3, because all they need to do is write code that changes the emotions, in Sims 3 they have to account for hundreds of interactions, animations, moodlets, and objects.
Also I would love to see a video that compares 3 with 4 and even 1 with 4.

The calling during work issue occurs because TS4 sims generally don't go to work.
If you enter into pre-made family during work/school hours, it's very likely that the sims are arriving late or skipping work or school. Even in active jobs, the game forces and/or spawns townies to be in the building, but in their job menu they're unemployed.
I haven't finished the video yet, but I know enemies and bad interactions are huge nonsense in TS4.
Lately CZcams has been recommending a video to me with a title like "What happens if I treat a child badly?", that is, children who get along badly with their parents in TS4.
I haven't seen the video, but my answer is clear: nothing. The children are not going to want to run away from home, and as long as they have the hunger bar at the minimum, the social worker will not come (if they pick up the children, I don't remember).
Reminds me of the TS4 videos of "I leave my sims alone for "x amount of time"", with thumbnails of sims dying, burning or living among garbage. This doesn't happen in TS4.

I think it boils down to laziness and complacency, knowing that people will continue to buy every Sims 4 expansion packs no matter how flawed the game is. Also, if a large demographic of the Sims 4 is children, then I can see why the life consequences shown in this video are so sanitized/dumbed down. Like the devs don't want kids to be upset over realities of life. Which is silly because kids will end up experiencing some of the same upsetting life experiences that happened in Sims 2. So it's still dumb to me.
My only major complaint about life consequences in Sims 2, is when your Sim(or pet) will get a question about doing something at work. And if you choose the wrong answer, you can either get demoted or outright fired. The way the questions are worded sometimes, it can be hard to know what is the right answer. Obviously you can cheat and look it up online but...

I think you are misunderstanding the chance card system. There's no right or wrong answer for them. You can always ignore them and you wont get a bonus/penalty, but the chances for one of two answers to be correct or wrong are usually 50/50. Some of them have higher or lower chances of happening.
In fact, sims 2 is a highly chance based game, as is sims 3.
The basis of sims1-3 is any action can have a consequence, here's a chance for this consequence for that action, and you can modify that chance with skills/personality/mood or other situational factors.

But in TS3's rabbit holes they went the other way, and in TS4's latest expansions the most interesting things happen in text only! I think these kind of situations have a great unexploited potential, even if the decisions you make work half the time at random...

The Sims 2 is an absolute king of a game. These videos prove just how much The Sims 4 falls short that it's not even a joke anymore. It's just sad. And it will never change until people vote with their wallets, employ some due diligence and do proper research before purchase, and stop buying this constantly-shovelled-out crap.
The only reason I prefer The Sims 3 over 2 though is that it solves my biggest gripe with TS2 where travelling between lots would pause time on your previous lot but when you return you''ve still brought back the needs loss you had while you were gone. I could go for a night out and back completely drained and ready for bed... at 2pm that afternoon... and the only solution I ever found for this was to cheat the needs back to roughly where they were which was very annoying and discouraged me from playing off of the home lot. The open world nature of TS3 fixes this and I find the trade-offs with the rabbit holes, etc. to be worth it.
But there's no denying that the level of detail that TS2 has demonstrates just how much love there was for its development overall and it has by far the best implemented expansion packs overall. And these videos provide some real catharsis. If only TS2 was still available on the EA Store for new people to pick up. it's almost like they're afraid of losing sales to people playing a better version of the game! It's probably why they've never reduced the normal price of TS3 content either, despite that game being 15 years old!

Thank you for summarizing how boring, soulless, and easy to play TS4 is.
The way it was dumbed down to be more “accessible” to kids is also quite insulting because I played TS1 (basically the hardest sims game) when I was 11 and I had a blast. EA severely underestimates the players. It’s not a live sim game when there’s no challenge or consequences, it’s a dollhouse.

  • @NoteToLoser

I really hope the devs are watching these videos and taking feedback while they develop TS5. I feel like the next game is make-or-break for the franchise because they've continuously dropped the ball on TS4 with every single release over 10 years, and this time around they have competition with other life simulation games
Honestly TS4 feels so hollow and lifeless. Nothing matters, so why play? It's a life simulation, yes, but at the end of the day it's still a GAME, and when playing a game you need rewards and consequences and a sense of the unknown to keep it exciting. Trying to advance in relationships and careers really felt like a *game,* where you sometimes get ahead and sometimes get set back, but in the perfect balance. Every time a Sim reacted to something it was so surprising and exciting; I'm still learning new things they react to to this day!
Whereas TS4 is a micro-management simulator that relies on your own imagination to create gameplay. There's no life to it, no surprises, no point in playing. And releasing every single expansion pack over 10 years broken, unfinished, untested? Splitting what we used to get as one pack into multiple (pets > cats & dogs and horse ranch)? It's literally so lazy that it's obvious it's just a cashgrab at this point. They really screwed an amazing franchise into the dirt
P.S. I came back to add that a huge part of the charm of TS2 (and even TS1 and TS3) was how wacky they were! They were so quirky and weird and interesting. Things like the psychologist, social bunny, tragic clown, Mrs Crumplebottom. The new ones are just too realistic and even the supernatural elements fall flat

When it gives you consequences for what you do, the system that manages those is SO skewed towards you not getting any or nullyfying the effects as soon as possible
You can mess stuff up significantly making all your sims miserable but the emotion system quickly supperimposes good emotions fully deleting the effect of the negative emotions
There are systems in place to cut down the durations of such negative emotions
Systems like reputation barely have any real consequence on the things around your sim and are so skewed towards giving your sims good reputations and such
You really gotta try to make things bad in this game and even then you can barely notice any bad effect

I have to thank you so much for this video❣ I now clearly see the stark difference. TS1, TS2 (especially) and TS3 use more of a show, less tell, where TS4, you have to read all the scripts, while the sims are showing something else.
I realized that when TS3 dropped the personality points/interests/aspirations of TS2 in favor of traits and moodlets, it was a step in tge wrong direction, but the worst to hit the cutting room floor was the memory and chemistry systems. TS4 even cut down the traits further, and the moodlets are so overly powered towards possitivity, that even tragedies are just a blip.
As far as TS4 adding in emotions, I see far more in TS2 (even TS1 has more emotions too)! 🤷‍♀️

Being able to call Sims in The Sims 4 while they're at work is stupid - They can't call while they're sleeping, which makes sense, so why at work?! I don't think there should be a magical, free Daycare kids can be whisked off to either. Sims should have to get their kids into one by calling them and pay for it each time, not for it just to happen automatically. Either that or, they call a nanny. If Sims fail to do either of these, they should refuse to go to work.

I'm also tired of sims disappearing into a rabbit hole to go to work. At least in TS3 we saw them drive their cars to the building, even if the building itself was a rabbit hole

Sims4 is my autistic nightmare realm.
Relationships feel fake & life is direction less.
In Sims2 you KNOW if you don't have a friend or date lol
You also have ideas on where to go or what to do:
    - You're out of groceries? Go to the store.
You can do so many things while at the store.
I've become a witch while raising social and then bought clothes.
New storylines just magically open up for you.

the Sims 4 was originally planned to be an online multiplayer game following the Sims 3 but negative reception of Sims City made them scrap the idea and repurposed it into the Sims next single player title, which explains the rough textures, the lack of depth, and the generally boring single gameplay, because it was supposed to be catered to a much lighter online game experience

I don't remember any of that from the Sims 2. I remember my pregnant Sim dying on her doorstep because the biggest challenge of the game was keeping their basic needs up, and it was near impossible when they were pregnant. So, of course, I quit without saving. I don't remember worrying about aspirations at all. I made Sims for my Sim to hook up with and they did as they were told. I temember pets and I remember your Sim could be scared to death by a ghost. Also, i burned out on playing and quit the Sims (and all video games) before Sims 3 came out. I didn't even know the Sims was still going until this past November when I saw someting about Sims 4 being free to play. So, it is a different game and I won't say it's better but I'm still having fun. It seems like some people ccan still play the other games, so apparently that is a viable option. I thought about it but it seems there a lot of hoops to jump through. I don't think I want it bad enough.

Merci de continuer à montrer que les Sims 4 est un jeu créé pour l'argent, alors que les générations précédentes de Sims ont été réalisées avec passion. Les Sims 2 et 3 seront toujours supérieurs aux Sims 4.

The enemies one is so dumb in TS4. People will randomly come into my Sim's home and do whatever they want. I can't even ask them to leave. Doing the shoo function just makes the intruder walk a few feet away. You also can't box them in and kill them sometimes. You have to effectively wall them off from EVERYWHERE ELSE, then just wait for them to get bored of your place. Even if you fight them constantly, they'll continue to stand around as if nothing ever happened. Also, I can have a level ten fitness Sim fight a scrawny one with no muscle mass, and sometimes the scrawny one wins in a fist fight. 🤨 You also have to pretty much alienate your Sim from all others if you don't want them just barging into your home. And finally, I miss burglars. 😢

I agree with everything in this video, but I do think the calling at work makes sense. In the sims 2, as the game doesn’t have mobile phones, you are calling their landline. So they wouldn’t be able to pick up because they’re not home. However, in the sims 4, sims have mobile phones, and the sim could easily have it at work. I’m absolutely reading into it too much, but I think that one could make sense!

13:46 Not only does TS2 need to have more score relationships to invite them to your house but also in TS1 does too. It is somewhat lame for TS4 the game from 2014 does not have vast depth like TS1 2000 game and TS2 2004 game.

11:46 In my recent playthrough in ts3, I was playing with a strong marriage, 2 guys with a maxed out positive relation with each other, being married and they were raising a toddler together. Little girl was a niece for one of these men, but after her mother's death, they took care of the baby (that's how I created them in the cas, that's their lore). Cherry is the girls name, and her uncle is Jessie, while his husband is William. So, as I was playing, I decided I'm going to go for some drama for no reason, and I made Jessie cheat on his husband a lot, sometimes even bringing his lover to the house where his niece (still a toddler) was present. Now, babies and toddlers in ts3 will have a negative moodlet if they witness cheating and their relation with these sims will go down heavily, and this was the case with Cherry. After like 2, or 3 times she saw her uncle cheating on his husband (she was still a toddler), she was over halfway the red bar with him. Anyways, I made William catch the cheaters AND he autonomously broke up with Jessie all by himself after the initial fight. I did not tell him to do it, I wasn't even playing the sims at the moment, just wanted to let him do whatever he wanted. Jessie, on his own, kept going back to William every few hours to argue with him every few sim hours. When Cherry grew up, she was hating her uncle and argued with him on her own, disliking every single interaction Jessie picked on his own. She was a really good friends with Wiliam though.
After some time, I decided to try and see if now, with William and Jessie being ex's and archenemies, if fixing their relationship will be possible and how long will it take if it would be possible. At that point, waaaaay before that, many years ago I was able to bring archenemies all the way up to friendship, but they were mutual friends and it also took a long time back then. I didn't play long enough to see, I think it's definitely possible for me to make Jessie and William become friends again, but it's really difficult and will surely take A LONG time. After an hour of me spamming friendly interactions with Jessie on William I was able to take their relationship up by a tiny bit, but the thing is, William wasn't taking it. He'd argue at almost every friendly interaction, and then autonomously be arguing with Jessie. It was like, every single plus in relationship I was able to get, I'd then lose it again immediately with William arguing all on his own. I were to continue playing, but real life kicked me in the butt and it's been long since I played the sims now.. But yeah, the sims 3 too, it had it's consequences and some are really difficult to fix XD. Oh, and also, in the sims 3, Jessie's reputation is now thrash for cheating and he get cannot get out of his house if he doesn't want to get slapped across his face by William's friends who learned about the cheating. In that game, sims can literally come to your sim and attack him if they lean they've been unfaithful. THIS IS WHAT I CALL CONSEQUENCES!!

I'm a TS3 player, originally TS2, and I swear I tried so many times to give TS4 an opportunity, but I can't spend more than an hour playing. It feels completely lifeless, annoying even with all these happy-all-the-time expressions. Sure, it looks nice and all that but why even bother when TS3 with CC and mods can keep me playing for weeks at a time? Even TS2 VANILLA can make me loose track of time, and the game is 20 years old ffs.
No hate on people who likes TS4 obviously, I understand that it can be love at first sight for many people, specially if it was their first entry to the series, but for us old players it's sad that the game we all love has become a soulless cash grab since it's launch, I just miss the passion and dedication that was behind the old games :(

One thing I hate is sims who have a full time job showing up to your lot uninvited during their working hours. Makes literally no sense. At least with phone calls you can pretend they’re on their break.

Let me tell you, I made a family in TS4 and literally the husband had so many adventures around town even had 3 CHILDREN outside the marriage. Eventually the kids from the household met through the school the illegitimate children, but they just got along fine there was nothing, no reaction… so I was like ok no big deal, let’s see if maybe the wife will react ? Seeing how there was no “bad reputation” the wife had no idea and still she too became friend with the other children 😊 in TS4 I guess you can be a serene and serial cheater without problems
