  • A homemade 15-foot cane rod, lines meticulously braided from the tail of a stallion, simple flies tied by hand without the aid of a vise-this is pesca alla Valsesiana. Originating on the small mountain streams of northern Italy, this simple, beautiful style of fishing has been in practice since at least the 16th century.
Led by the sport’s elder statesman, Arturo Pugno, it is still practiced by a small number of devotees on those same streams, using the same materials and techniques employed since the beginning. It is fishing at its most basic and refined, and it is only mastered by anglers Arturo Pugno calls “complete fisherman.”
The new Patagonia film, Il Pescatore Completo, introduces us to this timeless angling technique, its enduring maestro and the special places where it is practiced with the same devotion and reverence as it was centuries ago.

For years, I have followed Yvon Chouinard, fly fishing in the carrib and around the world. In my 60+ years of fishing I have never been stunned in this way by a story of fishing or fisherman. Truly a change in my perception of what it means to be a fisherman. I can barely contain my tears from the realizations I experienced from the truths of this film. I was introduced to fishing by my father in Vicenza, It. My memories are mostly from Central Texas as I aged, I can only praise the efforts to publicize the immense importance of the craft of aboriginal fly fishing as an art. Thank you so very much for this beautiful act of beauty...

@Big Foot Don't misunderstand my comment. I have a freezer FULL of fish. I salute the man's dedication to the "angling ethos" Purist methods and strategies in catching the fish. As a fisheries biologist I take care to treat the fish I release and the fish I retain with all the respect any of God's creatures deserve from all of us.

Big Foot yeah I know that catch and release with UL gear is shit, but a catch and release done properly, without stressing too much the a fish during the fight, is the best way trust me. Where do u live? England? America? Do you know the situation of the italian rivers? Probably not, so stop being a smartass.

But the older I've gotten the years of days I've been blessed with have deepen the love and appreciation I have of the trout and their river and stream homes. Immersing one's self in the nature of the moutains is a sacred and mystical live.

Yvon and Team, you have produced one of the most spiritual, inspirational and beautiful pieces on fishing I have ever seen! I am so grateful you let us listen to Arturo, who reminds us as fishermen and human beings: be mindful and respectful in whatever you do. Set yourself a frame of values and seek perfection in it. Works for life, works for fishing. And clearly: is is not about what you catch, but how you catch it. Who cares about size, when anybody could have caught it...
So, thanks again for this masterpiece! I will never forget Arturo‘s warm and wise brown eyes.

This is amazing. The pure “complex simplicity” of this technique is astoundingly beautiful. I am a young man of 35 years, barely old enough to remember a time before the internet, but it makes me so sad to know we are losing these masters of the art. We are losing the fisheries and we are losing the simplicity of fishing. We need to start to fight for this stuff or will be lost forever. Maybe it’s up to me... or you to make our own rods and line and learn from the river... just like Arturo. Much love

Simplify. Work it out for yourself. This applies to everything in life, which is what makes this film so timely.
I’m just returning to fishing after a hiatus. My natural impulse was to unholster my Visa card and buy stuff. Stuff doesn’t equal skill. Only time and focus can do that. This film reminds us that it’s time one the water, not $$$ worth of gear, that makes a fisherman.

By the shore in the southern parts in Italy, locals use same concept in the saltwater from the docks.
Now, from Croatia to France to Spain, same technique and tools was apply and even today new generations are using fly patterns inspired from the XVI
in the north west of Spain with feathers from Gallo de Leon, in the Curueño Valley.
