The HSD S11 is the first high speed bike from Tern build on the HSD platform with the new Bosch Performance Line Sport which is also a brand new product for Bosch. Hey Chris i got a GSD S10 a month ago my purchase was very much insoired by your review of the model. My story is that i have brain cancer and underwent surgery in November which left me paralyzed in the left side of my body. Wirh a lot of training, i am now back on the bike, and even though my left arm is still weak, i can ride the GSD without any problems, and still use the brake levers on the left. The low center of gravity and low entry serves my needs perfectly. This bike has given me my wings back, so to speak, and your review was an important part of the process. Great review! My friend who has been a bike mechanic for over a dozen years in Portland, OR has worked on some Terns and gave them a big stamp of approval as a well-designed and thought out bike. I am considering a GSD or HSD and these reviews are a big help. Next I need to take some test rides. I am pretty sure I could charge up either bike with my current solar set up running on a 400w lithium battery which would be cool!!

28 mph!!! Huge development for Tern. When I first started looking around at ebikes, the HSD s11 was basically the bike I was imagining. I bet this bike is going to move like the hottest of hotcakes. Would love to see Tern do something like an HSD x Vektron cross. Some more cargo capacity than the Vektron currently has, 28 mph, full folder, suspension fork, and a more relaxed cockpit (I found at 6' 1" that I couldn't get the Vektron to accommodate the nearly upright riding position I'd like on a commuter bike - had to take a more sporty position to reach the handlebars). The main issue that makes me want a full folder is I'm thinking about living in a neighborhood where I'd take NYC ferry regularly, and full folding bikes are free, but non-folding bikes cost an extra buck for each ride or an extra $20 bucks on the monthly pass. Admittedly, that's a pretty niche case, but I can think of several other use cases where my dream bike would be helpful: Amtrak commuters that want to bring a bike on board for first mile/last mile connections without an additional charge (lots of lines have a $10 or even $20 charge for non-fully folding bikes). Taking your bike inside a car and having more room for other things. Taking your bike on a bus (again, first mile/last mile connections). I'd gladly sacrifice some of the ease of carrying the folder for all the features above, especially if you're able to push/pull it around like wheeled luggage. Slap a belt drive on there with the Automatiq shifting system, and I may faint from the sheer perfection (and the price tag I'm sure such a beautiful beast would command). @ternbicycles, hmu if you want to scheme with me about my dream bike :)
Hey Tyce, sounds like a cool idea. If anyone could possibly pull this off it's Tern. They continue to surprise me with amazing innovations so I wouldn't think this needs to be just a dream.

How well does it function in the winter?
@@devinm.6149 It functions very well! We have people in Finland that ride our e-bikes, HSD included. But, winters come in all intensities. People customize their bikes differently to handle their regions. Winter tires w/spikes, battery cozies, handlebar mits, etc.

Love your videos Chris. I'm from New Zealand and I have an X Road 3 coming with the Bosch proformance line sport motor on it. I would love to see a review of this motor. It seems like a step backwards being a gen 3 motor with less torque then the gen 4.
Thanks! I have a video coming soon. I got to spend a little time on it. I think it’s a great motor, it’s just not as powerful as the Gen 4. It’s quieter, more efficient and more natural feeling though. I think it has plenty of advantages and I’m sure you’ll love it.

Hey Chris - great overview, thanks! A few things of note: the brakes from Tern's spec page show the Magura MT4 in the rear, rather than an MT5 (not a big deal, just worth noting.) Also, it appears it comes with the standard charger, rather than the rapid charger (2A vs. 4A I believe). One of the other things called out that you didn't address here and I'm curious about is "Enviolo integrated auto/manual shifting." I'm guessing it's a typo and copy/paste from the S+ page since I can't find anything about that product anywhere that doesn't involve a hub shifter?
Thanks a bunch for your feedback and for catching these things. We got this bike for review a bit early and it seems we didn't get all the right details. I really appreciate the comment.
Tern features that I wish Clementine (my GSD) had :
1. Suspension fork
2. A "cache" box, but for the second battery bay. Perfect place to keep the pump/levers/patch kit/spare tube.
3. A belt drive
4. A cafe lock that was NON-key retaining. I took Clem's off. I don't want to take my key off my key ring, but my key ring dangling off the bike while I ride it is a no-go.
Things I thought of myself:
1. The ability to plug in supplementary lights. I would love to have a light mounted below my porter rack so the road just before my tire was well illuminated. I'd also like to have a way to add a rear light to the kid seat. (I slap a blinky on the seat, but then I forget about it and the battery runs out.)
2. A spot to put intermediate foot pegs for kid feet. My kid's feet don't reach the running boards, and she could use a foothold for climbing in. The not-round tubing makes aftermarket foot pegs not really work.
3. A way to attach a trail-a-bike like the Picolo to the rack of the GSD. There was a nifty attachment system displayed at Eurobike (?) a few years ago for the Carla Cargo trailer that looked like it would work.
Always appreciate your insight and perspective!
1. Not so easy to adapt.
2. R&M made a second battery bag for their Delite in 2018 and in theory this could work for this purpose. I imagine this sort of aftermarket part could be popular as well. Good idea. We should have one if you’re interested. The capacity isn’t too big, but it could work. My only concern is the opening would be facing down.
3. Not so possible to adapt unfortunately
4. This could be possible to swap in a variety of ways. The cheapest would be to just replace that lock, but it wouldn’t be keyed the same as the battery. If you get the same lock with NR in the name it’s non-retaining. You could get all 3 locks replaced with the plus version to keep them keyed alike, but that does add to the expense quite a bit.
Other ideas.
1. I like this. I think if you can solder it shouldn’t be too difficult to splice in another lead from both. It should hurt the draw too much.
2. I would look into exercise blocks or wooden blocks to raise off the lower deck. Could be a simple way to get you by for now.
3. It might be possible that Stile the distributor for Tern has more of those mounts since they are the distributor for Carla in the US.

I was hoping Tern would come up with and HSD 28mph e bike with the belt drive. I want to never deal with rusty chains again.
It seems that this request is coming up a few times and I'm sure they are listening so we'll see if they can make it happen.
@@Propelbikes I asked Tern about this in December and their response was, "The HSD uses the Performance Drive series and we’ve spec’d the HSD S11 with the new Performance Sport motor to allow for Class 3 assist.
The Performance Sport motor isn’t compatible with belt, in fact we tried to use it on the HSD S+ but were unable to do so.

Based on that, it was a no go but hopefully the technology will catch up.
Hello. Thank you for this very informative email. I am trying to decide between the HSD S8i and the S11. Truthfully, I put $ down on an S8i yesterday. I think my concern is that I need a bigger gearing range for the rather hilly area In which I live. We are located right up against the District in Takoma Park, MD. Any thoughts on which HSD would be best or better between the S8i and S11?
We also live in an extremely hilly area. We ended up putting a smaller chainring on which gave us the smaller gears we need for our situation. We have a Tern P9 Performance. It has been a great bike and is really a favorite of mine.
When will HSD get upgraded headlights, tail lights and a brake light?
It looks like the S11 comes with an intuvia display now, what's up with that?
I'm a taller rider (6'3"). At 23:17, you mentioned that "Tern does have the option to do a taller mast for the handlebars." Can you tell me more about this or provide a link? I can't find any info about that on the Tern website. Is it only available as an aftermarket add-on? How much does it cost? Thanks for the video!
Sorry for the delay, the dealer will need to order this. I think it's about $100 and you shoudl gain an inch or so.
I love the Term HSD and GSD, alas they are way out of my price range here in the UK. While it would be well used and really useful 3 to 4k in price just can't be justified for me. Perhaps a mini win on the lottery will see me right! :-D
Maybe there will be a used one available or perhaps you could use the bike to do deliveries part time to pay for it.
Couple questions, Chris: will Tern offer the S11 28 max mph with a Gen 4 motor? ... with a carbon belt like the HSD S+? ... will it be able to tow the Burley flatbed bike trailer? ...accommodate two batteries?
Jeffrey, the S11 has the Gen 3 speed motor which is similar, but just a little less torque. Who knows what the future holds, but you might want to consider the GSD S00 if you could leave the speed and the auto-shifting. It can house 2 batteries and can definitely haul a trailer.
Would Tern come up with a high speed option for the GSD too?
It seems unlikely at the moment, but I guess only time will tell.
will the HSD s11 come with the new double kickstand for HSD>
This will be an optional upgrade as with the rest of the lineup.
Even though I lose some torque efficiency with a rear and or front tire placement I like the idea if my chain breaks I still have a usable scooter. Where I don't think that's true if the motor is hub located.
A broken chain/flat tire or other failure wasn't really something I was concerned with. I live in a hilly place and I wanted a mid-drive and the ability to have a rear cassette (or in my case a IGH) was important to me.
I feel like the throttle assist is extremely beneficial for people with mobility related disabilities. There are a lot of people out there who could switch to doing some of their transport via e-bike, but their bodies tire quickly and they need the ability to switch to throttle only in order to make non-automobile transportation doable. I think we need to end the mid-drive vs. hub motor posturing because it functions as a way to gatekeep. We want more people using something other than individual automobiles.
Fare enough. I slimed my tires. Also carry a min pump and a can of fix a flat as back up. Hoping I never have a need for any of it mind you but that's the thing about hope. It's not always reliable. Now I do have hills where I live but nothing like say a San Francisco type hills but my bike seems to handle them OK. I was kind of surprised considering it's only got a 250watt motor. Don't get me wrong it's no speed demon but for keeping appointments, shopping, going to the logical coffee house etc it does it's job well enough.
@@jimquinn799 I'm sure your price point was also considerably lower than that of my GSD. I needed a bicycle equivalent to a cross-over suv. It sounds like you didn't.
The my largest cargo is my seven year old, which is a lot of wiggly weight on the back of a bike on a hill. We hauled her around on the back of a regular old non-ebike, until she hit about 25 lbs, and then it just wasn't possible on our East Tennessee hills. My GSD is basically my Honda CRV in cycle form. (A box bike like the Urban Arrow or the R&M Load would be the full on minivan, in my analogy.) My husband gets to and from the office just fine in a Honda Civic. A hub drive would probably suit him just fine.
Chris does an amazing job of educating about ebikes, and it makes good business sense for him to focus on mid-drive motors and develop relationships with those companies. And while he does have a little bias towards what he sells, I've also heard him make positive comments about hub driven bikes when he has seen them at shows.
I agree we have different needs. I have no children. Most of my food stuffs I have delivered and my shopping there for is usually fairly low volume. My goal was what I call an Apartment Bike. Foldable so I can easily carry it up and down stairs, place it in my shopping cart. Basically take with and store it inside my apartment. Less concern regarding theft or mischief. So our needs are dissimilar.... I'm very glad both could be met and yes I think my bike was less expensive. Still,I do wish I had a bike shop where I live that carried EBikes test driving would have been nice. So many models and manufacturers. More coming still. It's a bit overwhelming.
Love this discussion here. I think Harrylovesruth put it well. I don’t dislike hub motors, I do however have challenges finding a source for bikes with them that can deliver on a level like Bosch. For many that use their bike for transportation reliability and support can’t be taken lightly. After nearly 10 years in this we see what holds up and what doesn’t and choose to support and recommend products accordingly.
Got me thinking about another video on this topic as I agree it’s important and getting people out of their cars onto bikes/ebikes no matter the type is progress. Thank you both for your balanced and civil conversation on what can at times be a touchy topic. Happy holidays to you both!
I'm hoping they come out with an HSD fat tire bike. There aren't any compact fat tire electric bikes with a mid-drive.
Hey Julie, Hope you’re doing well. I’m not sure if we’ll see a true fat bike from them. But you could take this bike remove the fenders and rear frame lock and add some fatter tires. The suspension is relative wide and without the fenders you’ll have decent clearance for at least a 2.4 but I imagine you’re looking for wider to handle the snow by you.
@@Propelbikes Thanks all is well! Thanks for the idea. Riding on snow would be nice but it would be more helpful for riding on dirt, gravel paths and roads when we are RVing. I'd like to get a couple of compact e-bikes for our RV.
I think you would find the stock 2.15 tires to work pretty well for that, considering you have a suspension fork and seatpost, especially if you drop the pressure a little.

Tern may have started with folding bikes but seems to have carved a nice niche for themselves as a CUV e-bike.

I agree about their niche! They are doing a great job! Regarding the gearing I think you’re want to swap the front chainring for a smaller one rather than a larger 1st gear due to derailleur clearance issues with the smaller wheels.
@@Propelbikes Would that effect the motors ability to reach top speed, or just make the pedal cadence faster for the rider?
Technically it would make the pedal cadence faster. I didn’t spend enough time on this bike to say whether could afford a smaller chain ring in the front, but really I think that will depend on the rider and their preferred cadence.

We have a Tern HSD P9 Performance and love it.
We live in a very steep hilly lake community. We ended up putting a smaller front chainring on and it gave us the gearing we needed. This new speed model is very intriguing. The people from Tern we so helpful to us as we were trying to make our HSD work in our area. The more we ride it the more we appreciate the design work that went into this bike.

Really a great overview as always but tell me, who needs a 28mph cargo bike with kids on the back. Better, can most people actually control such a speed bike. This is coming from me, former amateur rode racer where 25/35mph was real race speeds.
Thanks! This is a fair comment. Keep in mind people are often in a scenario that they drop their kid off and ride at a mild pace then ride a little faster on their way to the office. These sort of uses seem common in my experience.

Don't ride 28mph with kids on the back then?
In my experience riding with traffic, cars usually go around 22-25mph in neighborhood streets. I think that being able to match their speed is safer because they're not trying to pass and squeeze by me all the time. I don't need the full 28, but definitely more than the 20mph that most ebikes offer
(PS: I wouldn't carry children, but I would take cargo)
Not with my kid on it, but the ability to get up to "traffic speed" would let me go a few places that I don't feel comfortable on right now. Taking the lane cuts down on dangerous passing, but it pisses off car drivers. Road rage is terrifying, especially in an area where transportation cycling is perceived as a political statement.

It is a very good product, I like the quality but it is very expensive for the working class, and the battery is very good but I don't think it can travel 30 to 40 miles a day

It would likely work. It would definitely work without the suspension seatpost. Depending on your inseam it will work with it.
