  • Knapping is the shaping of flint, chert, obsidian or other conchoidal fracturing stone through the process of lithic reduction to manufacture stone tools. A hammerstone or billet is used to remove lithic flakes from a nucleus or core of tool stone. Stone tools can then be refined using wood, bone, and antler tools to perform pressure flaking.
For my boppers, I used copper slip cap fittings; and added weight with lead. Copper is used because it is hard, but soft enough to give a little. Lead would be too soft, and harder metals have a tendency to slip or crush the rock (which is why I had to upgrade from a ballpeen hammer). Far superior products can be purchased.

I appreciate the advice. I'm new at knapping; so all information helps at this stage.
