    • @JOTZdesigns
      @JOTZdesigns  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Kim!! ❤😊 There are definitely many people that say silicone should NEVER be used in resin, but honestly I think it's usually because they heard someone else say it, and not because of any factual information or their own tests, or they saw divots and got scared.
      I know some well known artists have said it before because it causes divots, and their followers have actually gotten into arguments with me about it - even when I can show them how it's not a problem, and I've have had no issues. Yes, silicone and resin are not friends, but that's how the effects happen. It does nothing to the structural integrity of the resin, and once a clear coat is put on - which I do 99% of the time silicone or no - you no longer see the divots (so long as the proper prep has been done)! I've even spoken with different manufactures about it, and they all said it is not an issue to use silicone oil in resin!
      LOL sorry for the mini rant, it's definitely something that frustrates me! I have often heard "So & so said to never use silicone in resin"... and I'm like.. sooo this piece I just made, and you just watched the video for was fake...?? ... LOL anyway, thanks for watching! I appreciate you! ❤😊

    • @kim99may
      @kim99may Před 3 lety

      @@JOTZdesigns yes exactly. Just because they aren’t friends the reaction is fantastic. It’s the same for acrylic pours. It may take an extra step if you don’t do a seal coat or dome your pieces but usually you need to anyways. I’ve seen some really cool effects but that was cool to watch. Gonna have to break it out.

    • @JOTZdesigns
      @JOTZdesigns  Před 3 lety +1

      @@kim99may Do it!!! Just remember layering colors is best, and the longer the working time of the resin, the more spread out and 'feathered out' it will be. I personally like shorter working time resins, or letting the resin sit for a while before adding the silicone, or 'containing' it in some way like a mold/dam. Record it and add it your your channel!! :D

    This is utterly gorgeous! I love jewel tones. And how you described at the end kind of working dealing with if there are Divets due to the silicone doesn’t seem like that would be a big issue to,fix in order to get this result. I’m wondering why I’ve heard that you can’t use silicone with resin then. Especially have heard if you have silicone in a paining and you’re going do a resin topcoat that you have to clean off the silicone from painting very well or else the resin won’t adhere properly. Why would other youtubers say all that? I’m definitely excited to try this myself though

    • @JOTZdesigns
      @JOTZdesigns  Před 3 lety +3

      Thanks!! Yes, silicone is definitely something that can be used with resin!! It's one of my favorite things to add to resin for effects!! I have heard many other artists - some that are quite popular too - say to never use silicone oil in resin, and honestly, I think it's just because they saw the divots and didn't know how to properly prep prior to a clear coat of resin, they got scared, or they say it just because they've heard someone else say it. I've even spoken with different manufactures about it, and they all said it is not an issue to use silicone oil in resin!
      Yes, you'd definitely want to clean of any silicone oil residue from an acrylic pour if it was used. It's not that the resin won't adhere properly, it's that the resin will resist the silicone oil, and the oil basically pushes it away, which is what causes the divots.
      In this particular piece, I did not have any silicone residue once the resin cured, (since, I didn't use very much silicone, and it wasn't dropped onto the surface itself) so I will not have to do any extra cleaning before a clear layer of resin is added.
      If I DID have residue though, that's when I'd clean it off thoroughly first with the cloth-like paper towel, then again with isopropyl alcohol & the cloth-like paper towels, and then I personally like to spray it with a clear spray like polyurethane - just for extra assurance that there will be no divots in the next layer of resin.
      It is certainly easy, and it works great for me. If I do not clean thoroughly, then chances are, there will be divots in the next layer. Also, I'd be adding a clear layer of resin 99% of the time anyway; so with the silicone oil, I really don't have any more steps, I just replace sanding it with spraying it with a clear spray. Easy!
      Please check out my other videos where I use silicone oil to see all the different ways I've applied it, and some of the different effects you can get with silicone oil in resin!! Thanks so much for watching! ❤😊
