Transitioning from piano to guitar. This was very helpful. Kinda learned the hard way that the hand techniques are different. 😂
Awesome! How long have you been learning guitar? And how long have you played piano?
Yo same. I just bought my guitar last week. I switched from guitar to piano and now I’ll try guitar again. Guitar is a lot harder than piano but I’ll try.

So, I have a bucket list and one thing on it is I want to learn to play guitar.
My eldedt Son who lives in a different state than I do, taught himself to play guitar back in 1998, had a band for quite a while which had my younger Son who is a self-taught drummer as his drummer (my younger Son is stilll in a band of his own and they play throughout the metroplex in the state he and I live in)
Anyway, for my birthday in March of this year, my eldest Son bought me a whole beginner's, electric guitar kit with a Fender amp. I am also a piano player but having a heck of a time trying to teach myself to play this guitar. Would it be easier for me if I learned how to play right-handed?
I should mention that when writing, I am ambidextrous. Thanks. Great video I learned I have been holding my hand incorrectly. I appreciate thst.
This is possibly the best guitar lesson I've found on the web, I've been struggling a lot with finger placement, this video completely solved that :-) Going to buy some courses on your website!
Thank you for the comment Martijn! Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for your recent purchase!
Thanks for the video content! Forgive me for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you tried - Rozardner Stopping Sounds Reality (probably on Google)? It is a good one of a kind guide for transforming you into A guitar legend without the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my work buddy finally got cool success with it.
As a self-taught (still in the process) guitarist in the initial stages, I would say this is a must-see lesson for EVERY budding guitarist who's learning by themselves. Incorporate every single part of the technique emphasized in the tutorial and you are well set to have good technique on the fingering hand.
The natural (and intuitive) way till be to play with the flat part of the finger and griping the neck with the palm. That way you'll hit a ceiling quickly.
Very nice lesson and thank you! :)
Thank you for the comment! Great to hear it helped you!
Self-taught? must-see lesson?... but... self-taught?.. if you see lessons... that's not self-taught...
Filipe Cachapa I think they meant that they don’t take lessons
This was a GREAT technique tip! I'm a 2 week beginner, and this made a HUGE difference. The tip on how the thumb puts pressure on the other fingers by proper placement was just what I needed. THANKS!!!
Awesome!
Thank you for taking the time to explain the “why”. You explained it so well and in such a short amount of time.
Thank you
For finger tips placement: put ur finger on the string and try different pressure levels at different distance from the fret: see how close you should play with to get good sound at the least fatigue.
I've learned so much from this!!! Thank you so much.
Thankyou so much sir. I was struggling a lot. You have made it so easy!
This is a really clear explanation of a good left-hand position. Nicely done!
Thank you Thomas! I have enjoyed many of your lessons as well!
I can't seem to get my wrist angle right, I have to turn it to a really steep angle to pay a lot of chords which causes me a lot of pain. Does anyone have any advice (preferably another person with very small hands)?
Always use a guitar strap and keep your instrument hi
I have the same issue, I think for some chords it’s not possible to keep the left wrist straight, but for some you can move your thumb along the back to move you wrist upwards. Although you commented a year ago so you probably know a lot more now !
i like to have my thumb most the way around the neck with it resting on my palm
maybe cross your right leg on your left leg so the guitar can go higher?
If you feel wrist pain just avoid this classical guitar technique and play the way you feel comfortable. Acoustic guitar is a folk instrument and doesn't have strict hand techniques.
I've been playing for closely two months now and this really helped! Thanks!

Thanks for the tip buddy. Really helpful tip
Soooo good! Thanks.
I am not sure why most people do not talk about keeping the wrist as straight as possible to avoid using too much thumb pressure. If you press too hard with the thumb you can cause tendon injuries at the base of the thumb. If you bend the wrist too much for long periods, you can get carpal tunnel syndrome. I had to learn the hard way. I hope I can help one person with this advice and also always beware of tension in your body and hands. It is not necessary for the pressure needed to press a string to the fretboard. I’m recovered and playing again with many changes that fit my physiology. Take care of your body if you want to play for a long time without injuries. Other than those issues, great video.
Great tips! Thank for watching!

I've been playing since June 2020 and i am progressing really well usually doing an hour a day practice however i still dont feel like my fret hand is comfortable when playing 1-5 frets near the neck and then also when moving up to 12th fret + on low E string i struggle. Im left handed. I play right handed. Its been an awful struggle. My left hand has always been ahead of my right hand. 20 years and ive mostly got my right hand doing what it needs to.
im self taught and have been playing with my thumb hanging out above the neck forever so im kinda stuck like that now... except for barre chords. It just feels really akward to have it low it makes me bend my wrist more too like that.
Jade S if you're stuck, try to fix it as soon as possible. Don't get super far in your playing with bad technique because you WILL run into issues later on and then you'll have to re-learn and that's always a pain. It sucks to go through that. This was 2 months ago but please try and fix that asap. It feels awkward because you're already used to the wrong technique. Just because it's comfortable, doesn't mean it'll be alright. When it comes to instruments, you have to be uncomfortable to play right

Some of that will come with time. Your hands aren’t used to doing something new. Keep working on it!
Great lesson. I just started 1 week ago at the age of 60. I am trying to teach myself nylon string. Can you tell me when my strings will stop stretching? Every time I play I have to stop and tune again at least twice. Thanks and Best Wishes
Thanks for the message! Congratulations on starting to learn to play! Are the strings new? New strings can be stretched by grabbing one at a time around the 12the fret and pulling it straight out away from the fretboard. After pulling it, re tune it and repeat until you can pull on it and have it stay on tune. If the strings are old, they may go out of tune easily and need to be replaced. Or the issue may be with the guitar itself and may require it to be repaired.
Hope this helps
Troy

I can never get my wrist straight when playing barre chords- it leaves pain in my wrist when I play. Any tips? (I’ve been playing since January)
Barre chords are definitely the hardest thing to play on guitar. It can be very frustrating. You can try playing around with the angle of your wrist and your elbow to try and find something that is comfortable. The good news is, it will get easier with time. It took me a few years of playing before I was able to comfortably play barre chords. I’m the meantime you may enjoy this video about barre chord substitutions. urgod paintrain your neck may be too thin - or too flat
its normal, building muscle is painful
How should i position my left wrist and elbow ? because certain chords and positions cause me pain and my hands are small and weak
Thanks for the comment. Good question. Your elbow should be in a natural position. You should not have to push it way out away from your body or pull it way in. The same goes for your wrist. If you lay your arm on your lap, palm up and then bring it up to the guitar neck, it should be close to the correct position. I hope this helps. I also have another video that talks more about this -

when playing a left handed guitar, would your left hand be on the frets or your right?
UpAt 3AM the dexterity of the guitar (whether it's left
-handed or right-handed) refers to which hand picks the strings. For example, on a left-handed guitar, the left hand would be picking and the right hand fretting.
Jacob Ebenkamp Thank you :)
I'm confused bc pretty much all the videos I see of great guitarists (brian may, hendrix, page) playing their thumb isn't anywhere near the middle of the neck...
I'm new to guitar, but one theme that I feel is common through learning music and things in general, is that it is helpful to learn to follow the rules before you begin to break them. Build a foundation/baseline first and then learn when/why/how to stray from it.
That a Canadian accent ? :-)

Thank you Rick! Hope you’re learning is coming along
Are u holding a left handed guitar
This is the most important aspect of technique. Biggest mistake most guitarists make. This is almost exactly the way I teach it (pat myself on the back).
Why so many guitarists place their thumbs on the left side far away from the rest of fingers?

Naw
Im left hande and i want to play acoustic guitar
The principles in this video will apply to you too, but it will be for your right hand.
Why is this for left-handed players? Is it different for right-handed?
he meant fretting hand . For right- handed player it is the left hand and for left-handed players it is right
Yes that’s right! I guess I should have said “the fretting hand”
one feedback ... as an absolute beginner ... (i've thrown a lot of money through the window, to buy a Strat) .... who thinks it is impossible to play those chords. It is not visible in this video what is the position of the guitar vs the body ... in other words, at what angle is it inclined vs. the body. From the position you play those chords, can you see the frets ? If yet (and this is the only way for me to put my fingers on the right strings) than it is impossible to keep the thumb on the back of the neck and have the fingers on the right position ....
Hello, thanks for the question. The guitar should be sitting straight up and down, it shouldn't be tilted back against the body. It is very common for beginners to want to do this in order to see their fingers better, but it will cause issues with your hand positioning. If you must tilt the guitar to see your fingers, get your fingers in the correct positions and then bring the guitar back up to the proper placement. I hope this helps.
How come lots of famous artist have their thumb placed different? Like on a C chord I’ll see artists lift their thumb up.
Thank you for the question! I should have been a little more clear, in that this is for strict form and mostly for playing individual notes (scales etc). The principle is there for chords too, but not as strict because the angle of your hand will need to adjust to play multiple strings at once. As your skill develops you will find you don’t have to be as strict. Also, everyone’s hand is a different size and some find wrapping their thumb around the neck more natural. Hope this helps!
@@Studio33guitar thank you for clarifying this! Makes sense. I find myself doing that the longer I play but wasn’t sure if that was correct.

Sorry, just saw this comment. Still struggling? How is your progress?
Do you have to be a 33 degree mason to watch this video?
This does not work for me at all. First, I simply cannot separate my index and middle fingers. In order to do this i have to twist my whole arm towards my body to a degree that is very uncomfortable and actually pains my wrist. Second, with my thumb so down my hand does not have enough base and the whole weight shifts on my fingers, which simply lack enough strength to hold the whole hand as well as the strings. Last, this way my palm mutes the high E completely. The only way i can actually manage to play the damn instrument is with my thumb all the way up.
Олег Кондрашов yes i am the same dude, so frustrating isn’t it! It makes me feel like my left hand/fingers and all the tendons inside are rubbish. No strength or flexibility at all!
I love John Mayer and although his technique is not precisely the proper one, who cares. It’s John Mayer.
I think my gaming years screwed up my hands because they feel so stif.
Are you brand new to guitar? It’s normal for them to feel stiff and awkward, because you are trying to get them to do something they haven’t done your whole life. It may just take time and repetition. Don’t give up!
@@Studio33guitar yeah I just need to be more consistent I guess. I’ve been trying to learn for a little over a year now on my own with CZcams and yousician. Ive made some progress but I feel like I keep regressing if I don’t play for a few days.
