This isn't spoiling, this is abusing. Spoiling is giving them expensive high quality food for example. This is making them subject to something they don't want, just for personal enjoyment. And it's disgusting.

Thank you! My floof has decided she only wants steam cooked chicken breast fillets. She gets new toys every week and plays with them once and never again. And refuses to eat anything cheap. She eats her food and then she eats with me as well and i cook extra for her (she's not fat, she's always been great at regulating her own weight)
But THIS is what i call spoiling an animal.
So if anyone wants to spoil their floof you may copy me. It's very fun and we both enjoy ourselves, and no one is being abused or taken out if their comfort zone.

Spoiling pets is totally fine, as long as people remember they're pets and not people. Buy special food and new toys, take them to new places, spend the day with them - it'll make them way happier than magic tricks and clothes.

Exactly. My 2 cats get a couple bottles of Whiskas cat milk at Christmas. Thats about as much spoilt as they get, cats in particular actually have whiskers all over their body, not just their face, so making them wear a costume actually causes them whisker stress as those whiskers are attached to nerves which when inside a costume basically tell the cat it doesn't fit in that space so the cat ends up stressed which can result in many health problems.
Dogs can also overheat in a costume, while I admit I did put a lion mane on our labrador for a photo competition, I put it on immediately before the photo and took it straight off afterwards, she got a treat immediately after too .. The horse kept his unicorn horn on, they don't have problems wearing costumes 🤣
Edit; also agree with the obese animal thing. I'm sick to fuck of seeing obese animals online whether it be a dog, cat or horse. It's not fucking cute and needs to stop.

Okay, so I do spoil my dogs by buying them lots of toys, playing with them as much as possible all day, cuddling up with them at night (and in the day when I am working), giving them a warm shower when they get muddy (usually just with warm water, but sometimes special dog shampoo and conditioner if extra cleaning is needed), and baking and cooking for them a couple times a week (vet-approved, appropriately portioned meals and treats). And yes, I have given my puppy a bunch of my socks and expensive blankets since for some reason he loves stealing my socks out of the laundry basket, and he deserves nice comfy blankets to keep him warm. And yes, I do give them presents at Christmas, but they consist of nothing more than a stocking or box or bones and toys (which they get year round anyway). And they love unwrapping the box as much as they do some of the toys! I also buy games designed to stimulate them mentally, and have trained my puppy to push a button when he wants to play, so it’s easy for him to communicate that to me. I even organise play dates for my dog with his best friend (another dog we met in the park).
So anyway, I am definitely someone who likes to spoil my pets, and I realise that I probably do so more than most. However, I would never dress them up, and all the other stuff here sounds absolutely nuts, even to me.
If you spoil a dog, you should spoil them buy enriching their life AS A DOG. A dog isn’t going to be stimulated or interested in magicians and strippers, they’re just going to be confused. You’re basically just throwing a party for yourself and using your dog as an excuse if that’s what you’re doing. If you really wanted to treat your dog, you could instead have spent that money on a visit to a new, interesting location, with lots of new smells and places to explore - like a beach, a woodland path, or a new park. You could bring a picnic basket and blanket and take breaks to give them cuddles, play with their favourite toys, and give them their favourite foods for lunch as a nice treat (vet approved - dogs cannot eat the same things that we eat! Their food needs to be tailored and portioned according to their needs. And don’t forget to bring a bowl and plenty of water for when they get thirsty if you are making a day of it!). You could even arrange it as a play date if they have another dog who is a friend, so the two can run around and explore together.
That is the kind of thing that a dog would love and find really special.
A birthday party or hen do will be completely boring to your dog at best, or - more likely - stressful and confusing for them.
Treat your dog, by all means, but remember that they are a dog, and your special treatment of them needs to be tailored to their canine instincts - not your human ones.

I don't like the expression "spoiling your pet". If you are spoiling them, you aren't being aware of their needs. People often use the word "spoiling" to mean "looking out for their needs"(which is a really good thing). I would love it if we used more precise language.

    This is a fascinating topic.
I would say my cats are spoiled, but I wouldn’t go as far as having daily clothes or specialised food for them. The most I’ve done is a $1 bandana or Halloween costume for shits and giggles.
That being said, they have top of the line microchip feeders, and we have previously had one of those big wheels. However, all of this combined didn’t exceed $500.
At my age, my wife and I make extremely good money and do not have kids. Insurance and vet bills included, I’d say we don’t spend more than $1000 a year on them. At our dual income, that doesn’t even make a scratch on the budget.
I think it’s the least they deserve given the comfort they provide to our space.

Mind you, the doggy golf fan reminded me of my cat, who used to love snooker on the tv. Every time a ball dropped into one of the pockets she would stick her paw underneath the tv in line with the pocket and waggle it around, ready to 'catch' the snooker ball.

True. But that's no excuse for projecting emotional needs on to a dog, pretending they are human, and disregarding the nature of their species. Talking to a dog is one thing, because dogs are social animals who communicate with sound, but more than that is not going to meet, but mask a dog's needs.

To be honest, some of it is taking it too far, sometimes even "abusing" (for the lack of a better word) but it doesn't hurt when it's useless. Many jobs are created especially for dogs now. A huge economy is created about dogs. So no, I think we should keep paying a lot of money on our pets if we have the money. I buy mine many many treats, many toys, get him to day care that is quite expensive, I get him to the groomer several times a year. If there were other services, like swimming pools for dogs, cafes for dogs to meet etc. I would be happy and spend my money on that. After that, I understand the argument that some go to far and that when it hurts the dog, it should stop. Just saying that the amount of money spent shouldn't be seen as a bad thing.

@@_JiminyCricket_ Possibly, I'd say it's more they get used to it, and esp in dogs will put up with it as they know it makes the human happy for some reason.
But except for hairless breeds, reasons like Vera mentioned, and some short coated dogs to ward against the cold, it's most likely not needed and something we humans force on them.
I had a boxer for 13 years, brilliant dog, he actually preferred to be outside in winter for most of his life, but took it as his duty to be inside protecting his family at night.
