Little About Us*
Welcome to our channel! We are Liam and Janine, a husband and wife duo with a passion for travelling and living in a camper van. Over the years, we’ve embraced the van life, starting with vanlife in the UK with a Ford Transit camper van conversion and then upgrading to a Citroen Relay (luton) removals van campervan conversion. We absolutely love the freedom and adventure that comes with being a van life couple.
Following this we travelled to India, and now we are in a micro camper doing van life Europe

Scam story starts at about 6:00. Someone throws a stone or uses a metal rod to damage your van while driving, pretends you've damaged their car, then try to take you to a cash point.
I started to think that the video about the scam WAS the scam, since it took forever to get to the point!
Thank you very much. You saved me several minutes!
😂😂😂thanks!
Thanks saved me 26 mins 😂
Actually it's very realistic here in South Africa such things happen daily.. Every situation is possible open your mind or 1 day you will get robbed because you thought this was a scam.. Be prepared for anything
Liam we had very similar happen to us in Italy, they said we broke their wing mirror. We said OK let’s go to the police as we knew we hadn’t hit them so not suspecting a scam we thought they’re just crooked BUT this was in 2021. They weren’t happy with us wanting to go to the police and I must admit it scared the crap out of me. I put the phone to my ear and said I was calling the police. They got in their car and went. We were in a hire car not a camper, very scary. ❤️
It's horrible! I'm sorry you had to go through that 😔
@@ThoseHappyDays. ❤️ ❤️
UGH!!!! for as awful as this experience must have been I think you did very well. Now you are mega prepared for this ever happening again. Thank you for sharing and Well Done 👏 💯🌹
I always have a dashcam running these days. There's too many idiots and criminals around to take chances.
Really scary. Imagine if that happened when you were alone!
Loved this 3 month trip with you! Can't believe it's 3 months! And all this time I've been living vicariously through you guys whilst trying to recover from chronic illness. You've given me great comfort and joy and I'm looking forward to your next installments. Sending peace and love to you both😊🙏🌱💚
I think you'll like what's coming next 🙌
I believe my parents got scammed several years ago in the South of France when a moped said my dad had knocked him off and damaged the bike. It was lots of money but my dad handed over the cash to repair it. I believe he went round doing this often. Lesson learnt. Don't hand over cash. Loved the Amalfi series. Thanks.
Bloody hell some people are so unscrupulous, very scary! I’ve heard of people throwing eggs at car windscreens which obviously makes you instantly turn the wipers on making it even worse, you stop and are then robbed! Who thinks up these things? Glad you’re both safe and you escaped all that. Excited for your next plans 😊
There’s been a situation in Portugal car parks, (which targets cars, not just vans!)where you come out of a supermarket to find someone accusing you of damaging their car and of course their car does have damage so it comes down to your word against theirs. They also demand money.
Horrible
"your word against theirs" ... Exactly. The onus is on them to prove you did it. And their word against yours is legally useless.
@@DD-co1zn Never underestimate the Stupidity of the Corrupt Court Systems.
@@davemacpherson4752 The scammers referenced aren't going to take you to court for a 100 euro scratched car scam. They aren't even going to call the cops. This scam is based on you being gullible and/or scared of them, and willing to pay them money on the spot. Call the cops and watch them flee.
Strange...I'm from Portugal and I've never heard such a thing.
So good to see how happy and optimistic you are compared to a few months ago after your difficult times when you you had problems with the garage. You have shown us the meaning of resilience.
❤️🤞 thank you for the support and kind words
Credit to you both for spending 3 months in such a small space. Another tip for washing up is use the spray with a mix of 20% white vinegar to water. Killls off bacteria and doesn’t need rinsing.
Great great tip, love it being eco friendly too
Oh grt tip cause I do use white vinegar...👍🏻🏴
Get To The POINT 😕.
Unfortunately I they try it on everywhere. In Australia they claim people push a supermarket trolley into their car. Just be very assertive back. They back down
About 3/4 of the way through watching, so many great tips relating to car camping also handy for van life I have saved this video to my reference list!
Glad it was helpful! Think it's important to impart any tips you acrue to pass onto whoever might need it
I've found the little stoves that take the butane canisters to be excellent, so I'm not sure why they did not work for you. On a recent trip I cooked four breakfasts and boiled the kettle eight times on one canister, and still had a bit left. I do have a collapsible wind shield that I use, so maybe that has something to do with it? The canisters are cheap and you can buy them almost anywhere, even some supermarkets. The only problem some people have is the canisters can ice up in really cold weather, so you just keep one canister warm and swap it out if the one in use starts to slow up. In warmer weather it's not an issue. Works about as good as any other gas stove I've used.
My best camping meal is a one pan pasta verde that I can make at the drop of a hat. That and a glass of red and I'm a very happy camper.
We love pasta Verde too, we make it often ❤
Keep an eye out for the propane butane mix canisters, they still work fine in the cold. 😀
Butane becomes completely liquid (no gas leaving the canister, no pressure left) around the freezing point. So it's of no use in winter outside. A propane/butane mix or pure propane is better in winter, but I'm not sure you can get this in the necessary form factor. If you really cook a lot, it might be better to get a real cooker with a hose and a refillable (or changeable) gas cylinder. Small ones by "camping gaz" have 2,8 kg, the grey steel cylinders start at 5 kg and are even cheaper, last longer than your holidays and are changeable in almost every country. Using those avoids a lot of waste.
THEY LEAK GAS WHEN NOT IN USE. LIFT LEVER TO DISCONECT CANISTOR AFTER USED.
@@MrGf3 Definitely. Safety first.
Thanks for the highlighting the latest scam, don’t need to go to Europe to get scammed 😢, plenty of scammers in the UK, would recommend having cameras on your vehicle.
Thanks for the scam warning, it always helps to be aware of such things. You did well to last 3 continuous months, especially with heat and mozzies. Looks like you had a great adventure. We look forward to see where your next journey in life takes you. Keep safe ❤

Why not use White Vinegar?!
Ideal also for suacepans if foid is caught/ slighty burnt in the base. Add vinegar agitate , leave a few moments , put lid on and heat up . Wipe out with kitchen paper towel !😊😊
Oooh, exciting new chapter about to unfold. Half of me wants to see you in a bigger camper and being paid by Amazon Prime or some such platform to do a series, but I'm not sure if that fits with your free lifestyle. Whatever it is - I'm looking forward to following you guys on the adventure 😊

Happens in the services and aires as well. On our way to south east france around Bordeaux a couple of weeks ago when we had parked up, a guy put his head in our half open window and very politely said our car had smoke or vapour coming out of the engine as we came into the services. We locked the doors and said thanks but its ok, put the window up and did not get out of the car. We drove onto next services and i stayed in car while husband checked under the bonnet just to be sure. Of course it was fine but we were rattled because our car had broke down in the UK causing us to miss the ferry and spend a night in a hotel! Now we never leave the car together, always one person stays with doors locked and windows up and handbags etc. Are well hidden under or behind seat. Sounds like paranoia but its not as its happening all the time now. Such a shame its putting us off driving in Europe after many trouble free years.
Such good advice
Good to see you both ❤ Thank you for sharing the info on this scam, I sent it to my parents. They are in their late 70s and drive through Europe to holiday in Italy. That would be such a horrible thing to happen to anyone, but to older people who are uniquely vulnerable, it would be dreadful 😕.
Thankfully you have kept your vibration high and been well prepared and as usual you've attracted some lovely characters to you on this trip. I especially enjoyed the passionate fruit farmer, the lemon sorbet seller and the wonderful pastry chef who continued her craft despite not being able to taste anything. Incredible people really make a trip don't they? Who have been your favourites? People have given *you* some great hints and tips along the way maybe? Now you are paying it forward and sharing them with us!
So much admiration for the way you grabbed the series of unfortunate events with the Morgan situation and have turned it into opportunities for an extra visit to India and the Camino, plus some amazing unique micro camping adventures!
I'm SO excited to hear your new plans. You always make the best of everything so I know whatever it is will have me pumped to follow along! ❤❤❤ A boat?...a new van?...maybe back to Ireland?... I can't cant wait to hear!!!
Lots of love and see you next week. The doggies send wags. ❤
Aw thank you so much, another upbeat supportive comment 💖 that we loved reading x
This happened in Europe a few years ago, car overtakes you pointing to your car and when you pull over one man will show you the tyre which they stabbed at your last stop causing a slow air release whilst the other one robs your car.
To prevent your food getting burned, have you considered a small tripod type device between your pan and the burner to lift your pan off the direct heat?
Not a bad idea at all
Thank you Liam for letting people know about this scam it's awful 😖 enjoy your journey and take care ❤❤
It's not a nice one, and pleased to be able to share a way not to get drawn into it
It's been lovely, lively, interesting, exciting fascinating at times and always a real pleasure joining you on your adventure travels. Good morning Liam and Janine. Thanks for another great episode. Xx
Thanks for watching, here's to your Sunday 🥂✨️
Shame on Italian cops who turn a blind eye to scammers. In this country that constitutes as aiding and abetting. Hat's off to you for highlighting the issue. Maybe if people took licence plates and reported incidents more often they'd be forced to take the situation more seriously. Would an airfryer or slow cooker be better plugged into your power bank or would that be to cumbersome and inefficient. Has the winner of Morgan been announced yet?
For sleeping bag storage instead of pillow cases buy some compression sacks. They are basically bags that have four straps built in. Stuff the sleeping bag inside then pull each strap to compress it down. Quick and easy and tekes up way less space. Used these all the time when I was touring on a motorbike. You can buy them for less than £10.
Great tip
Lovely and informative… can’t wait for your next adventures 🤗
More to come! Thansk so much
That little lever next to the dial on your cooker, that needs to be in the UP position when not in use otherwise all of your gas will leak out. We have one and we use it everyday multiple times a day and we go through one gas canister a week. Also when you’re not using, remove the gas canister

Welcome back to uk. Cant wait for whats next! ❤
Same! It's actually very exciting for us too and next week we promise to share it all with you
Same thing happened to us last year in Northern Italy with a caravan. We were on a 10 wk, 10 country trip from Ireland. We were near Milan when we saw a car flashing us behind. Pulled in and the driver said we hit him on a roundabout. Pointed out a black mark on the caravan & a broken wing mirror on 'his dad's borrowed car'. Had a photo on his phone with the cost (€370) of a replacement. We totally bought it. Ended up giving him about €300. We were never happy about the circumstances (I'm an ex driving instructor & chauffeur) & this just confirms our suspicions. It totally soured our view on Italy & we would be VERY reluctant to visit again. Personally I don't wish karma on the c**t, I just know it will happen.
Sorry to hear that
Thank you for the brilliant review of the equipment and products required for your car camping. Very practical advice! You both appear relieved to be going back home to the UK and that's a good thing! Always pace yourself though, and take each day at a time. It's back to yoga! Liam, tell us about how ur dad fared while in India recently. Hope he had as good of a time as you and Janine! 🙂
He loved it! And might go back as he loved it so much 🇮🇳
The months flew by (as a viewer at least 😂). Excited to see what’s next for you guys.
Thank you 🙏 once again. We have been freezing here DownUnder. So watching your travels has lifted our spirits so much.
In the uk we can't imagine it being cold down under haha
Happened to us in June this year, I knew all about it, trouble is I stopped and jumped out of our Motorhome, he showed us a black oily mark down the side of our van then proceeded to wiggle his WHITE door mirror and mentioned Police and that was it, told him to ring them, then I called him a Scammer he seemed to understand that and couldn't get away quick enough, the black line on my van just rubbed off.
The gas stoves work really well. I’ve had one for more than 20 years that I use to boil kettles etc when I’m marshalling on rallies. I’ve just ordered a collapsible windshield to use with it. The gas canisters are cheap and last well.
Hi, it was really good to catch up with you both last weekend, and I am looking forward to seeing your new adventure plans. Take care and stay safe
You too, hope you are have a fab follow up weekend 😀
When we returned to our car in a parking lot I noticed that there was someone sitting in the car parked in front of us, waiting. As soon as my friend started the car that person started his and drove backwards to ram us. My friend had superb reaction and avoided it, but you can imagine what would have happened next.
A few days later in another city we found our car with smashed side window and our stuff stolen. F Italy!
@@tomlauris that's shocking
In the first case a dashcam could have been of help.
@@HolgerJakobs In the meantime I have one, they really should be installed in every car by default. I recorded another accident like this, but this time she wasn't a scammer, she just tried her very best to avoid a reversing truck. A video says more than a thousand words.

Thanks for watching! More to come
Brilliant video!!! Don't leave us on a cliffhanger!! Hope all is well, take care of yourselves
Welcome home. Good that you are highlighting the scam. It happened to our very good friends luckily only one man so they argued and eventually he drove away. My friend’s nerves were shot to pieces and they’ve said they’ll never return to beautiful Puglia where it happened. 😢
@@bridget9111 horrible! And what I dislike the most about it is not just the brutality of it, but how it casts a mark on a beautiful country full of beautiful people
@@ThoseHappyDays yes and they will never return so sad 😞 we feel the same about Cartagena where a gang tried to car jack our van but luckily they hadn’t taken into account our right hand drive so we were able to drive off with me hanging on to the passenger door they were trying to open. Thank you, we honestly loved it, best summer ever so far
I have cameras covering front, back and sides of the vehicle. They have covered their cost several times in saved time and cash.
I have loved watching you it’s been amazing. I’m in the Netherlands in my little camper heading down to Luxembourg, Strasbourg , Switzerland then Italy, I’ll be watching out for the scammers, fortunately we are three vehicles so we will stick together. Thanks for the heads up. Looking forward to what is next.
Nice vid with top info about the scam. Just a note on the gas hob. I live in my van and use a campingaz hob with similar gas canisters and I go through at most two cans a week and that's using it for cooking everyday and heating up my water for washes and doing my washing up. I thought that was brilliant. I can even usually slow boil a chilli for two three hrs and I've still got over half can of gas left.
In 2021 driving in Italy we had an incident of being accused of breaking someone’s wing mirror. When we stopped and he saw we had a dash cam he quickly backed down, it all seemed odd at the time, couldn’t put our finger on it, after hearing Liam talking about a scam I think it probably was.
Sounds like it 😢
It happened to me TWICE!!! One year and then again the next. I didn't stop but they did do damage to my van. I will never go to Italy again!!!!

I have a cook top like that one and I used it for weeks before I had to change the bottle. I’ve noticed that you really need to keep the pot or pan directly on top of the flame though and that it can’t be too big. Maybe test a different type of pot.
Great vid as usual, a great summary of your microcamping experience so far, so many questions answered! 😊 I was wondering how you survived regarding washing yourselves and the loo situation, did you just have to rely on any faciliries you could find or did you have something setup with the van?
We used wet wipes and sometimes a bucket and soap, but often we would nip to a cafe, buy coffee and get ourselves sorted there
@@ThoseHappyDays For the loo on the go I use a pop-up bivvy loo along with the 'does what is says on the tin' 😁 poo powder which all works surprisingly well 😊

HELLO, I HAVE A BUTANE CAMP STOVE. I LOVE IT! THE UTILITIES IN CALIFORNIA ARE HIGH SO I USE MINE IN THE HOUSE A LOT! YOU COMPLAIND ABOUT THE BUTANE USE OF YOURS. Another fantastic little bit of art from Janine. Look forward to your news 💃
Another scam for van lifers and caravans is that, they pull in front of you forcing you to stop, at which point they show a large piece of metal saying it fell off your vehicle and has damaged their vehicle and demand instant cash.
Yes this too
The stoves what i use. I dont go through that much gas. If a tin does 3 or 4 meals im happy. I swear by it. You may just have one with a badly desighned jet.
