    Netflix is no stranger to adaptations. One of the more popular categories of this is true crime. With that in mind, I am comparing the nonverbal communication of Ted Bundy and Ed Kemper to Zac Efron and Cameron Britton to see what similarities exist and where they differ.

    I've always found Kemper fascinating and I couldn't put my finger on it...but you hit it right on the nose where there seems to be this duality of blame for his crimes...that while he definitely understands that he committed these crimes and that he was wrong for committing these crimes that he seems to feel that he was almost fated to commit them and there was nothing he could have done about it. He seems to feel responsible but not at all in control...but then has a sense of contempt and superiority for not getting caught. But all of that seems genuine and that complexity is so fascinating

    Ed talks about his murders the way heroin addicts talk about the things they’ve done to get drugs, there is an acknowledgment that their actions were harmful and very wrong but it’s rationalized by that incessant hunger for drugs, and Ed appears to describe an incessant hunger for this ritual of sadistic sexual homicide that he was addicted to.

When I see Bundy footage, I'm always thinking, "Yeah, he's guilty. No doubt, something is wrong." When I watch Zac, I really want Bundy to be innocent, because Zac seems softer, more trustworthy, and as you said, charming. That almost makes Zac scarier, as I would never want to find myself alone with the real Bundy, and I like to think I'd pick up on the danger signals. Bundy was wiry, capable of quick powerful lunges. He frequently biked around and played tennis/handball. He was quite agile. Ann Rule said she was surprised at how toned his legs were when she first saw him in shorts. Kemper was kind of a lumbering oaf in comparison, he never really kept in shape. People think it was a glorification but it was one of the few films I've seen where the murderer was shown as charming and competent in a very unique way. Using Efron was smart because he is beloved by a lot of the public. He's kinda sweet and goofy and Bundy was very cunning. IDK why people hated it so much.

    I feel like the lack of emotion that Zac and Cam couldn't nail really shows how deeply they still feel and can't even get in that "head space" as an actor, which just means for me, as a non-actor, it makes Bundy and Kemp all the more scarier to just be dead and dry like that.

    • @wolfe6220
      @wolfe6220 Před rokem

      I can actually see why the real life guys seem very dead and dry. As someone who's undergone sexual assaults and other abuse since I was a child, those incidents have played back in my mind like a movie, over and over. I could sit down with you and tell you day by day, what happened and you would be wondering how I could recount what happened so calmly. It's not that I don't feel, it's that I felt too much and I can recite what happened like reciting a dictionary.
      I'm not sure about Bundy, because I haven't studied him, but I have studied Kemper for years and I've communicated directly with him. I think it's the same way with him. He may not have the complete depth of feeling that most people have, but it is there.
      Deep down, he hates himself because that what he was taught growing up. He's scared, despite his calm demeanor and he's wanted what we all want--to be appreciated.
      Being incarcerated is basically all he's known in life, almost 55 years now, and it looks like he'll die there, within the next year or two at most.
      I think the structure, the control the COs have over him is familiar to him, as his mother controlled him. Except the COs are a hell of a lot nicer to him than his mother was. She made life for everyone in that family hell on Earth.

    If you want to watch an amazing, terrifying performance of an actor playing Ted Bundy, watch Luke Kirby in "No Man of God". It came out last year. What made his performance terrifying, besides how he looks so much like him and has a lot of his body language, Luke Kirby plays him as what he was, a human. I know we as human beings don't want to call Bundy, and many others, a human but he was. Only humans do what Bundy did. Luke Kirby played him as a human I think Bundy was: a man who wanted power and control and did whatever he could to get it, including killing, and when he had no control, he was nothing but a scared little man.
    There's an amazing scene where Luke Kirby/ Bundy recounts a kidnapping, rape, and murder of a woman. It's an amazing scene because we actually don't see anything. We just see Bundy recounting it and becoming sexually excited... it's terrifying and yet, you can't look away. You can actually find the scene here on CZcams. Plus, a woman directed the movie. Comparing the actor and the real Kemper I noticed for the first time how unpersonable Kemper truly is. Up until now it never stood out so glaringly because he is so calm and seems open.

  • @Funny_Muffler
    @Funny_Muffler Před 2 lety +9

    I wish the guy who played kemper leaned more into the somber straight recollection that actually happened than the smug leaned back delivery. His tone of voice is pretty decent tho. I don’t know if it was the directors decision but I really didn’t feel he portrayed him well at all.

    • @saraghhh
      @saraghhh Před 2 lety +1

      I’m wondering if the decision behind it was so that Kemper came across as more confident and strong when compared to the main character, who always felt like he was on the brink of losing it himself. There was something about the way they portrayed Kemper that would have drawn someone like the main character to him and really increased the fascination and attraction. If he was monotone, barely moved, and seemed “weak” it would be harder to imagine the attraction.

    • @Funny_Muffler
      @Funny_Muffler Před 2 lety +2

      @@saraghhh right the only thing I could think was that it was a creative choice to boost the story telling. I guess the only reason to find the actual kemper interesting was because it was real; as to where when you’re watching a movie or show you expect more of a character.

    Could you do this kinda of thing with the movie My Friend Dahmer? Ross Lynch (who plays Jeffery Dahmer) did a lot of research in preparation for this role and its such a good movie, he researched everything down to how he walked and carried himself
    The movie was based on a graphic novel by one of his old friends he went to school with, the author was so freaked out he had to ask Ross to take of his glasses he was wear for the movie because Ross reminded him so much of the real person, people in the area who knew him told Ross that he was acting just like him

Kemper I have I always found more intriguing then bundy, bundy has always seemed like a ignorant child who thinks they better or smarter than everyone, just another stereotypical asshole who can’t control himself. Where as Kemper who may be egocentric still was able to think others and understand the weight of his actions.

    I wonder how much the entertainment portrayal enables actual killers to get away with stuff. Do we expect certain behaviors because of it that a real killer would not display? A lot of people I know seem to have a hard time picking up on cues that a person is unsafe or at least toxic, and I wonder if it’s because they have been “taught” what that looks like by Hollywood rather than by reality.
