Couldn't agree more with your assessment of it's value. You're really paying for the k3m and if you like the design of the body... and you shoot mostly video so you don't need the viewfinder. Some people will appreciate the few differentiators it has but I don't regret my a7siii purchase - phew haha. Great vid as always Gerald!
Was hoping it ATLEAST had more dynamic range. Makes me happier to have my A7Siii. I always watch your reviews first Gerald, thank you for the honesty!!!
I like the more video-centric nature of the FX3 vs A7S III. To me the five mounting points are gold, and the handle/XLR is appreciated. I just wish Sony would learn the value of shutter angle and anamorphic support. As a result this camera can only ever be a B-cam, but for those times when low light performance, 4K/120, and better AF are required, it earns its place in my studio.
@@junefiasco I currently use several cameras including the Sony A7S II, A7R II, ZV1, ZV-E10, JVC LS300, Panasonic DVX200, GH5 M2, GH5S, G9 and GoPro as main cameras, depending on the job requirements. They each have pros and cons, but after the big announcement of the last 24 hours, I suspect the Panasonic G9 II is likely to become my main camera, although it will take using it before I can be certain. I keep getting sucked in to using Sony cameras, but Panasonic stabilization, anamorphic support, shutter angle, menus, and ergonomics, as well as the smaller MFT lenses always pull me back. The rock solid AF of the new camera means I may have finally found my perfect camera. I won't get rid of my Sony cameras, but I find myself using them less and less over time.
One thing that could differentiate the FX3 from the a7S III is the noise reduction, because the cinema line is noticeably superior in that regard. If the FX3 doesn't have the cinema NR at launch, maybe it could get it via firmware update and then that would be a valid reason to pick it, instead of the a7S III (assuming it doesn't get the same update) for video work.
Let's hope FX3 will get an Firmware update 2.0 with A7IV features, like A7SIII got an FX3 (S-Cinetone) update as 2.0. It'll make FX3 a step above A7SIII.
Absolutely brilliant camera for professional video work. Powerful and reliable. The XLR inputs and the active cooling system are a major update. Impressive package in such a compact cinema camera. Sony really nailed it, well done.
Awesome video Gerald, just kind of curious though because you said it doesn't have face-only AF like the FX6, but does it have the exact same AF as the A7siii? Just wanted to make sure. Love the new studio btw
Love the cliff hanger for Lindgrens video 😀 For the record, I don't believe Sony will be updating the A7s III with cinetone because, and I bet more than anything this will hold true, cinetone is a FX feature reserved only for cameras in its lineup. That's right- pony up the few extra bucks if you want Cinetone!
Hi Gerald: May I ask if you intend to produce a video on Firmware 2.0 for the FX3? Either way, thank you for all that you do. Your content has been critical to my learning and growth in videography.
Came across your channel a few weeks ago. I really appreciate how clear and honest your reviews are without the brash salseman-ship found on some other channels.
DISCLAIMER: I misunderstood the information on the website, the following part is, as Gerald states in the comments, incorrect. For the sake of completion, I will not delete it tho. So, 90 seconds into the video and I'm not to sure this is coming later in this video so I might just comment in advance: It is not exactly the same as the A7S3, since the FX3 records 4K 120p ONLY in S&Q. Normal mode is capped at 60p max, if I'm correct this is the same case for the FX6.
@@geraldundone Ah, yeah. Just looked again at the website, the reason why I misunderstood the information there, is because in the specsheet for the A7S3, 120p is the first that shows up in the list, for the FX3 it's pretty much the last to show up. So, of course I was wrong to doubt your information :x EDIT: nevermind the next part, I remembered wrong again. jeez. Since I got your attention here, did you notice any colorshift issues with S-Cinetone like in the FX6? I'm sure there was something in this regard
Would you recommend Sony A7S III or FX3 for a solo documentary filmmaker? Was waiting for the FX3 announcement before I made a decision, but seems like A7S III is still the better option.
Wait so they made a cinema line camera without the ability to turn off noise reduction? And it doesn’t even match the FX6 color or codec wise? Lame, totally a missed opportunity

If you plan to get the K3M then it will save you some cash ($178 for EDU discount people), but even then you don't get the mic and if you ever sell the camera to upgrade you can't keep the audio piece anyway so might as well just buy them separately so you don't have to worry about buying one again in the future.....but I could see both sides. i bought the fx6 and the a7siii in hope that they would have matching colors but i was disappointed ... i hope sony fixes that with firmware because this would make buying the fx3/a7siii and fx6 combo the perfect A/B Cam setup ... and since cinematch works rather well i guess it must but only a software issue ... i imagine a new cine EI mode on all Sony cameras that is perfectly matched, for base iso only that should not be that hard but it would be such a help imo
I think you made a very good point, the FX3 needs shutter angle and DCI 4K at 24p to be an FX camera. Part of me also wished that it would have sported a 6k sensor like the FX9, or even the A1's 8k sensor, would be perfect for mounting on Sony's upcoming drone. Nice video like always and excellent ending!
@@ahmedreads1794 The fact that they added a fan and can shoot much longer than the SIII.
