I would say this camera is for someone exactly like me. A beginner-ish videographer who has an A7iii and doesn't really want another typical alpha camera body in their kit but wants the features of the A7siii and some of the FX6, as I wade into the cinema camera world.
It comes with the XLR adapter. That adapter doesn't sell on its own right now, but with the mic it costs $600. So that, to me, is what the FX3 offers that the A7S III doesn't.
As someone who came from shooting on Fuji before switching to Sony I can tell you that tally lights are a GOD SEND on multi camera shoots. Being able to quickly glance across a room from most angles and see if a camera has stopped recording for whatever reason has saved me multiple times now.
You can actually enable the record assist on the A7SIII to make sure that you’re actually recording. It enables a bold red outline around the frame that shows that you’re currently recording.😉
I have a brand new A7SIII and see no conflict with this FX3, the only real advantage i see its the inclusion of the XLR capable handle interface, but i usually use external recorders so its not a big deal for me. Maybe in the future i will add it to my gear along my A7SIII, but no replacing it. I always use a cage, i have a Smallrig one, and its perfect to me. Greetings from Chile.
It’s a real miss on Sony’s party to not include the auto ND. that is one of their greatest achievements and more useful than the ibis on a small gimbal friendly camera
Yes, why the hell did they even put a shutter in it? We already have a photo shooting FX3 in the A7SIII. Shouldn't cinema cameras have internal ND? So f'ing lazy Sony!
@Cherian Philip well ye, but why not buy the sIII then? Specs are identical. Dont really see the point of this 400 dollar more expensive camera, that should in theory offer more as a latest release.
@@destinfarr Hm well its a great camera, but you dont get as much dynamic range and its "only" a super35 sensor. Which normally would´nt prevent me from buying it, but the ONE thing that does is the non existing Eye Auto Focus. I film a lot of interviews and it is such a joy seeing the protagonist in focus 100% of the time no matter where he/shes moves.
I will say as a videographer… this is definitely a camera I would go after. It has the form factor and convinces I am looking for. Now alternatively, Mark Bone said it best, no ND and no time code sync. Those two features would leave me to just save up and get the FX6. Now I personally, after purchasing the FX6, intend to sell my other cameras and get the FX3 as my B-Cam alternative. Again, I am a videographer not a photographer and with that I will leave the A7SIII to the likes of you and other photographers.
FX3 any day for professional video work. XLR inputs, active cooling system, top handle, mounting points, dedicated video buttons. a7S III still is a great camera with similar image quality, but the FX3 is just more reliable and convenient for professional work.
Seems pretty confusing. Kinda wish they had the internal ND. Or something more groundbreaking like NVMe m2 SSD grip that records internal without a Ninja V.
Peter from Sweden, again thank you for this review! Always good to have your point of view. Hope all the studio construction is heading in the right direction for you! Thomas from Canada!
The fact this didn’t have internal ND solidified my decision to get an A7SIII. The lock on the mode dial is an annoyance for me as well. I also don’t know if I wanna go back to flipping through modes digitally either. I started on an a5100 and that makes me think of that experience. I’d need hand on experience though, it’s probably way more functional now especially considering I’ve learned a lot. I also don’t think the 4K 12mp sensor is enough for hybrid photo as a first cam. So I wouldn’t recommend it for that which is one reason I DO see a place for an Fx3. People who know their needs probably shouldn’t get the A7SIII as a PRIMARY photo cam anyways. I think something like an 18 mp 6K sensor would be nice for the future if they wanted the SIII to SIV to be hybrid pro for both video and stills. Then again, we now have the issue of an A7 SIV having new features the cine line essentially has to have.... An Fx3II would really need like SDI and internal ND to be different and they already haven’t accomplished that. Kinda makes sense that if your video first but do require some photo you get an Fx6 and an A7SIII. I don’t think the A1 really blew me away in a sense where I don’t necessarily think it’s that camera to match the Cine line. Though it is the actual hybrid pro camera right now, it just doesn’t seem to be “IT.” Will be for some but not for most. Then we need to consider data rates will be insane on the 50mp sensor. I think the sweet spot in 3 years for Sony is 6 k versions of all of these new cameras (SIII, Fx3, and Fx6) then something like like internal ND, SDI, 4K DCI. It would mean the SIV possibly wouldn’t have these features but it also means that there is in fact a difference between the two and the SIV is more useful in hybrid applications considering it would be higher resolution. I’m just thinking as I type haha

For regoular ground use, i don't see big reasons to buy this instead a7s3.. maybe better reliability on very long shoots as the cooling is better
This is for those who shoots 90% video instead of photo and want a body that is more video centric and is looking to get a a7siii. I can see where sony is heading for and I applaud them for that. So many naysayers about sony not giving them built in ND filters when what sony want to do is a rehouse of the A7siii + pro audio handle at a discount. If u want ND get fx6.
I think given the top handle with XLR’s that come with it gives the camera a more complete kind of cinema camera for less money package. Cause the fx6 may still be out of the range of some so this gives you as close as an entry point as you gonna get being only $400 more than the A7SIII

I was honestly a little disappointed that it didn’t have build in ND filters. However, the more I think about it the more I am convinced it is a good option for the cine line. The way I think about it is that this is the A7siii if you were on a higher budget film. It will fill in the role of a B or C cam to the fx6 or other cine camera’s with the reliability of a cine camera line. You have the same performance as a a7siii with a built in fan so you get the extra peace of mind and reliability that is required for higher budget films. I am not however saying that the a7siii is not reliable as I think it is. But this gives a reliability that is assured.

I am the person this camera has been made for!!! I am a professional reporter and documentary shooter. I do dangerous topics most of the time and having a camera this small is fantastic! I run an FS5 and an A6500 at the moment and I am thinking about replacing the FS5 with this instead of an FX6. Being lightweight for me is essential and I never ever do photos. NEVER! So this camera is very interesting for me. The lack of a viewfinder and ND filters is a problem yes, but the size of this camera allows me to walk more in the jungle or in the desert! Also it means bringing a lighter tripod with me! I can change all this with some ND glasses. Looks really nice to me
Great review as always. I own both Canon and Sony...really enjoy the Sony layout, features, and ease of use. Don't know I need to buy a cinema grade camera at this time but good to know it's out there should I ever be in the market. Think that glove company should sponsor some of your videos...that's gloves look perfect for filming in the winter! 👍👍👍
Why no mention of the XLR handle? It gives you a Top handle with two XLR/3.5mm TRS combo audio inputs , Microphone holder and 3.5mm mic input, and Digital audio with up to 4-channel, 24-bit recording. To me, that's a huge thing that it has over the a7siii. No need to spend $600 on the xlr-k3m. I was going to get an a7siii but am now going for the fx3 for that reason.
So tempted to switch from Nikon to Sony but just can't seem to bite that bullet. I think having this and an A7 rv would be the combo of a life time for photo + video + backup on both fronts.
The FX3 needs an update to include ND filters and video specs to separate it further from the a7siii. Especially the rear screen resolution and size and brightness.
First time coming across the channel. Love the format. If I had to choose between those 2 specific cameras, I would probably go for the A7Siii for the versatility.
I see it more as an expensive uncompromising crash cam when the producer doesn’t want to risk damaging or losing a Fx6 or FX9 for a risky shot. The small body size is useful for certain use cases. For everything else or for a “one man band” online content creator or producer.. I think the a7siii is a more versatile camera.. I guess we will see how people use it once it’s out for a few months
1. I’m not a photographer and never use an evf 2. XLR Ports 3. Rec lights. 4. Fan is a nice to have but not a deal breaker. Not having built in nd filters is a big miss, but for those shooting 100% video I think it’s a better option. One thing I don’t like about these hybrid cameras is that the lenses are built more for photography than video. More compact dedicated cinema lenses would be great to pair with a camera like this.
My job bought me an FX-3 before I started (been shooting on blackmagic previously) after 2 weeks I'm enjoying using it. I used to have A7sii which I loved. I think for people just getting into videography or if you just to fast run and gun, I think this camera is great. You can just set your settings and off you go. Kind of like the 6k pro but it has all the internal stabilising stuff and auto focus so if you still a bit wobbly on those things it be a real help. It's also great for hand held. Will definitely consider this as a B camera or if I was shooting in low light conditions like clubs or weddings
Who is this camera for? My guess is that it makes the most sense for people who own a camera like the A7C, A7iii or a camera more dedicated to photography. Sure, you can take photos on the A7S iii but why would you if you have a more suitable camera? The FX3 is more video oriented and that’s why I love it. That and paired with the XLR module is why I’d pick it instead of the A7S iii as my goto video camera. Tack för underhållande videos som alltid! 🙌🏻
I’m a stills shooter......but it seems like a bit of an ‘own goal’ to not have put internal ND’s in the FX3, that looks like a huge omission to me. If it had Internal ND’s, then I could see this really making a difference, as it is, I’m not sure there enough of an advantage for a hybrid shooter for the things that are on the FX3 vs what they have taken away that the A7S3 has. But what do I know, I’m a stills shooter.
I was wondering, do you think that Sony might be putting this camera out to compete with Canon's new C70? So good to see a video from you again. Can't wait to see more videos on the new studio.
It's literally no hastle to add a cage to the a7s3 which allows for way more accessories to be added. The view finder is axing for those quick social media shots and the s cinetone profile is on the a7s3 now as well. Only benefit i see is for drone use
Ha ha ha! Your pinky is lite lång... Jag vill ser detta video men på svenska. Tack så jätte mycket Peter du är mycket mycket duktig. Hälsningar från Chile!
I use the fx3 daily. I really like the in camera stabilizer. I bought it over the Sony A7siii because I couldn't find any! It's so hard to find cameras right now.
I have a Swedish girlfriend for 13 years, and I still don't understand very much Swedish hahaha. you are a true Swede, your vid is hilarious and smart at the same time. So I'm getting the A7sIII now . I was on the fence about the two. I really want to the FX6 but I can't wait as I have a job I need it for. thanks for the great review.
the whole point of this camera is not for low-end people to get into the FX line this is for high-end productions to use a lower cheaper camera that will fit in small tight spaces a camera that will fit on a gimbal or a drone easily that's the whole point of this camera it's not for low people to reach to the top it's for the high-end top people who basically look at this as it almost exposable camera
Answer to the question: who is this camera for? Why me of course. I want one, coupled with a few wide angle Zeiss Loxia lenses. I already have a high megapixel camera for photos, so I just want something for video and I'll be set. I like that the FX3 is compact. Thank you Peter!
🤣🤣🤣 love watching this guy. One of my fave youtube film go to guy for a good watch and laugh. As for technical jargon. Gerald Undone is on the go to main guy. Keep up the good work bro. I purchased an A7Siii because of you and Gerald Undone. 👊🏼
Hmm, hard choice, I would probably prefer fx3 for a few reasons (long record times guaranteed by fan - sometimes I shoot a day continuously... and buttons on the front. And nicer design/esthetics. And shooting with the handle is nice for lower operations). But I love having EVF on concerts etc because no one bothers “photographers” about permits. A bit disappointed they did not put a permanent electronic-ND in front of the sensor, that would really have made it the only small full package. You can always put a variable ND in front of the lens some people say, but then you are polarizing the image and getting a completely different look (more saturated skies, sharpness of reflections, how well you see through windows, flaring etc etc). So the lack of NDs kind position it a bit below a normal pro camera
I believe an A7S III CINETONE Update comes on the 25th of Feb.. so I am clearly keeping my A7S III, + the camera also takes fantastic photos with an EVF.
Great video! I love your work and your ''swedish'' english ;) hahahah... I wanted to buy the a7siii and i waited so much for it to start selling in Serbia but now im gonna wait for fx3 and buy it or even two of them. Thanks a lot for great content and keep doing that, you are so damn good!

@@PeterLindgren1 yes, That would be nice! I want to switch to sony cameras from canon so I‘m whatching a whole bunch of your videos. Great Input! Thanks! Now I‘m waiting for the a7iv to come an hopefully this will be soon 😬
the fx3 I dont think is too impressive becoz its the same price as the a7s3 and the fan feature isnt too crazy because we all know the a7s3's resistance to overheating also would have loved to see u talk about the photo features of the fx3 or if it even has it...anyways thats what I think amazing vid bro also would love to see the vlogs and the office build out more...
The FX3 absolutely destroys the a7S III for professional video work in every aspect. XLR inputs, active cooling system, mounting points, tally light, included top handle. At similar price range, it’s a no brainer for any filmmaker.
The FX3 and A7S III are practically the exact same camera. FX3 has no IBIS and EVF compared to the Sony A7S III. From all the reviews, no one has experienced any over heating issues recording 4K 120p video on the Sony A7S III. Also you can just grab a cage for the Sony A7S III if you want more mounting points and a top handle. So the only big difference is the audio interface that you get included with FX3 if you really need XLR outputs
I figured it out. The fx3 is for the type of person who would strap an a73 and a gimbal to a RC car...... do you even need a gimbal now with the ibis and in body stabilization?
Feel like its just an a7siii without an EVF, and small form factor-ish. Its more expensive and I would take the a7siii over that one not only for price, but dial layout like you mentioned. Still really cool.....but interested to see how other people use it.
The price is about the same, as FX3 comes with the professional XLR input with handle. This handle is exclusive only for FX3. Wish they made a similar one for a7s3 and other hybrid cameras.
@@educatetube That would be hard to make since there are no mounting holes to secure it. I get it a $500 accessory and small form factor makes the difference, but I guess it is only worth it if you need XLR audio. But that handle is dang cool for sure.

I am upgrading to this from my 6600, if you had to recommend 1 lens to start with the Fx3 what would it be?
24-70gm
Super sick breakdown dude!! crushed it 🔥🔥
My job bought me an FX-3 before I started (been shooting on blackmagic previously) after 2 weeks I'm enjoying using it.
after watching you i got 2 a7s iii and i love it.
It's good for nerds and people who has lots of workflow and need to setup quickly
Long time fan, came here after Geralds video!
Doesn't seem worth it coming from a GH5 user who wants to get to full frame platform. But I love the look of it.
Crazy you're wrapped up in a winter coat and I was walking around in shorts and a t-shirt today in vegas. Great review!
I was wondering, do you think that Sony might be putting this camera out to compete with Canon's new C70? So good to see a video from you again. Can't wait to see more videos on the new studio.
Welcome back Peter. Let me use this new video to ask when will you finally launch your video course :-)
First time on the channel. you cracked me up with ur swedish side bro. totally sticking around for more content ✌👍
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is now doing camera reviews!
Cool vid. Its super interesting on everybodys view point on the new FX3. Everyone is different and it really depends on your needs. Great video Peter
Another great video Peter! Keep them coming. You owe an update on your new studio build too! Cheers!
I think if this FX3 had built in ND it would shine on its own, but not really much point otherwise. It looks cool IMO
dont forget that you can use timecode in the meta data on the fx3 and still use a shotgun mic...
Hey Peter. Will you get the new DJI FPV? What do you think about it? Would be stoked to see you review it!
Won’t be buying it but maybe I’ll get to try it out some time in the future!
tally light wins for me ,shame they never gave it an internal ND like the FX6.. as its a killer feature
Nice Video.... specially the Sahåra part :D
The Sony premiere hasn't even started yet 😂
Hey Peter, i have to say that really enjoy your videos. its so fun and your are a really cool guy and funny.
Today: Sony FX3
In 2 weeks: Sony A7FX3-1
Sony: Funny Comment Dude - Hold our Beer.
Who here thinks Peter's videos are the most EXCITING to watch? 😍
If you all upload at the same time, I can’t decide which I should watch first😔 (just kidding of course this one)
the whole point of this camera is not for low-end people to get into the FX line this is for high-end productions to use a lower cheaper camera that will fit in small tight spaces a camera that will fit on a gimbal or a drone easily that's the whole point of this camera it's not for low people to reach to the top it's for the high-end top people who basically look at this as it almost exposable camera
It’s for filmmakers who need xlr. Which is a significant portion of the potential FX6 customer base.
Great review as always! Thanks for the great content!
So the lack of NDs kind position it a bit below a normal pro camera
yes the man uploaded!!! yay
I have a Sony A7III, should I get the FX6 for video and keep the A7III for photos? What's your advice?
Hi Peter, nice Video! You are „complaining“ about the a7sIII missing the red lights when recording, but I think there is an opportunity to Turn on a red Frame While Recording on the flip lcd Screen. Mayer you didn‘t know and this helps ....
Yeah I’m aware of it, but I would still love to have the red lights glowing!
Yes
The FX3 and A7S III are practically the exact same camera. FX3 has no IBIS and EVF compared to the Sony A7S III. From all the reviews, no one has experienced any over heating issues recording 4K 120p video on the Sony A7S III. Also you can just grab a cage for the Sony A7S III if you want more mounting points and a top handle. So the only big difference is the audio interface that you get included with FX3 if you really need XLR outputs
As always, good review man!
I assume that the FX3 despite being a "cinema" camera, can take photos.
Correct! Basically an SIII in a new shell 🙃
@@PeterLindgren1 They should have removed the stills shutter and put in ND instead, what a miss. :(
I think a 90 second facetime chat with Gerald at the end would have made this a much better video. But that's just me.
I would love to try this camera out ! You got some amazing footage out it 🔥🔥
I figured it out. The fx3 is for the type of person who would strap an a73 and a gimbal to a RC car...... do you even need a gimbal now with the ibis and in body stabilization?
Welcome back Peter
Just came over from Gerald, love your Swedish-ness. :D But what's the one thing no one talks about? ;)
