    I really think FX3 missed out on so many important cinema features - true 24p, shutter angle, waveform, anamorphic mode, DCI 4K, time code - not to mention internal ND, hybrid articulating screen, removable EVF, dual bottom 1/4 screw, better LCD - that it only makes us wonder why Sony not only placed it in the FX line but also priced/spec'ed/released it so similarly/closely with A7S3. And the major addition being the XLR handle is actually not as versatile or functional as your own handle plus a separate XLR-K3M unit.

    I prefer the A7SIII over the FX-3. THEY ARE the same camera. Only 2 real differences between the 2; One has an EVF, the other doesn’t and one has a handle and the other one doesn’t. Personally, I wouldn’t trade the EVF of the A7SIII for the handle of the FX-3. Moreover, the FX-3 is MORE expensive than the A7SIII for no justifiable reason I can think of. Actually I believe it would make more sense if the FX-3 was a few hundred dollars cheaper than the A7SIII and not the opposite. The A7SIII is a better deal than the FX-3. Besides the handle, the FX-3 offers no advantage over the A7SIII, yet it cost more and has less. Just my take.

    Very useful review. I just want to add that tally lights' traditional function is to indicate in a multi-camera shooting scenario which camera is "hot" (being recorded and/or broadcast live) at the moment. This is especially important for each camera operator to know (so they don't do anything that wouldn't look good on air like, say, zoom in to check focus), and, secondarily, for the talent to know which camera to look at if they're speaking to camera.
    Oh, and... I've heard that the reason the FX3 doesn't have internal NDs is because it does have IBIS. Apparently, with current technology, you can have one or the other, but not both.

This is the first camera that I actually feel like it is the best without having to be pushed into it. • @Markchristiankc
    @Markchristiankc Před 3 lety +9

    To answer why there are no internal NDs... I went to an expo where a Sony rep explained it in a seminar. Basically it's because the fx3 had IBIS. Physically you can't have internal NDs and ibis on the sensor at the same time because then the ibis wouldn't work at all. Because the ibis is shifting the sensor around to compensate for camera shake, if you added internal NDs to that sensor it would be too heavy for the ibis to move the sensor around. So it's basically just either or 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @vizionstd
      @vizionstd Před 3 lety +7

      Imagine you put those ND filters IN FRONT of the sensor. As a cinema camera they can strip down the mechanical shutter and replace it with ND filters. Sony, do you hear it?

    Why the a7siii and fx3 don’t have internal nd filters are so beyond me. Sony has been putting them on the zv1 and rx100 line and those cameras have almost zero space inside the body. You would think that cameras 4x the price would have that tech as well

Now I'd rather take the a7sIII with the optional audio module that you can attach and detach any time you want. This is important especially for gimbal work. I dont see the FX3 on a gimbal with the handle and the audio module on top. There wont be much space if you wanna shoot in underslung mode. The audio options were a nice feature for me, this isn't the classic "XLR add on option" for dslr's years ago. it's a better handle then the one on my FS5, more ergonomic, mounting points, lacking another cold shoe, but I'll take it over a small rig handle.
      The built in fan inspires confidence for long takes like I have to do for the documentary I'm DP'ing and the livestreams I produce.
      The cageless design makes it smaller than my A7iii with a cage, it's just missing that 3/8ths + 1/4 20 on the bottom for a video tripod plate.
      It's so dumb but the record button and dedicated video oriented buttons are nice. if you are worried about the lack of EVF look into getting an older used Zacuto viewfinder, I kinda hate how small my a7iii viewfinder is for video anyway and I don't use it. You could also rock that duvetyne over the head look like large format cameras require.
      IMO this is a great b or c cam on fx6 or 9 shoots, get your hands on one I was pleasantly surprised how much I like it.

    If you get internal ND filters you cannot get the IBIS. I have the FX-6 with the Internal ND filters which is exceptional, however my footage is much shakier handheld on the FX-6 than the smoother handheld video from the FX-3 with IBIS. They both serve two different purposes. For run and gun smooth footage the FX-3. For tripod/stationary doc work or shoulder rig the FX-6.

  • @EmilyGeraghtyGeraghtyCreative

    I have the A7siii and the FX3.
    I bought the A7siii in Dec 2021 on Craigslist, at a little bit of a markup from the new price actually, because it was so back-ordered from the chip shortage! I sold my A7sii because I had major overheating issues, not very professional to stick your camera in the fridge in the middle of a shoot. Since I was used to the A7sii body this was an easy transition. I have the Sony ECM-B1M shotgun mic that goes on the hot shoe and it provides really clear sound, great backup for the XLR inputs on the Fx3 if I have a lav mic and an XLR input shotgun on that cam.
    Then just a few months ago I sold my FS7mii and got the Fx3. Now both my cameras match better in post, the A7siii and the Fs7mii were not matching well. I dig the top handle with the XLR inputs, and that you can mount it vertically on a tripod quite easily. Also, as a 5 foot 5 135 pound gal, the Fs7mii was WAY heavier and any weight I can cut off my kit is really important to me.
    They both have awesome autofocus via the touch screen which is amazing, and really quite idiot-proof, no excuses for out of focus shots! Being able to really pump up the ISO without getting much grain is awesome.
    They work together really well and I would highly recommend either of them, or both!

    Flexible audio inputs and multi channel adjustments on locstion for origination options are as vital to me as the imaging capture options; so, the FX3 will be my next purchase. Undoubtedly a cage addition will come along to gain a larger outboard viewfinder, on cage light, etc.
