  • childsplaymusic... & / childsplaymusicperth . You can use packing tape to make a drum skin • Homemade packing tape ... . But will duct tape or gaffer tape work?
Not really - duct tape is too heavy and too stretchy to work well; gaffer tape is even worse. This video explains why and shows the difference in sound of the three options.
Thanks to Juliet for asking me this question on my Facebook Page / childsplaymusicperth . I didn't know the answer! Now we all know.

I think a part of the physics you neglected in your discussion is that packing tape is uniform, while duct tape has a grid of tear lines. The energy imparted into the drum head wants to find a boundary to deliver the energy quickly, and these grids probably help to break the wave up, whereas the homogeneity of the packing tape might avoid this.

I made a drum with duct tape and it resonates brilliantly, but the diameter is much larger than the one in this video, at about 26". I used double sided tape a few times around the outside, before stretching the duct tape across the top. After I fixed the first skin on, I went around again with double sided tape and put a second skin on. Lastly, I wrapped the sides up with duct tape to finish. It booms!

as a percussionist, i think both the packing tape and the duct tape sound good. the duct has a decent bass sound, thicker more like a frame drum sound, and the packing tape has a brighter sound more like a the high toms on a drum kit. i wonder if u place a snare wire kit ( used in cajons) how it would sound? also if u mic both of these and eq them with some effects it would sound wicked.

To me, as a drummer, I'd say that the duct tape drum sounds fine, I'll be using it as a floor tom anyways.

If you're going for a bass drum, duct tape is the way to go

Do you think he would use an actual drum head on a piece of PVC? He has some amazing drums that DO have Remo heads, but this is a cheap alternative for someone like me who wants to have a little fun with percussion without forking out any big money.

You are talking about the drum head, not the drum skin. I came to this video expecting something entirely different.
