freshwater clams. I think they are a problem back east clogging pipes and such. there are similar in the big diversion canals in central Arizona, not sure if they are as big of a nuisance here. used to gather and play with them as kids.
@@pnl282 ah yes, zebra mussels are probably what I am thinking of in the eastern drainages (upper Mississippi area?), but shells in video were definitely clams.
The Appalachian Trail is definitely not safe or doable by horses. There are lots of places where the hikers have to climb up the sides of rocky cliffs on rebar ladders. I love horses and hiking but all trails aren’t safe or appropriate for everyone.
Freshwater clams are in a lot of rivers. I have some ten times smaller in this river on this ranch. The babocomari river in South East Arizona. EDIT: those jets might be f35s I heard they are extremely loud. None stationed in West Virginia. There are some in North Carolina though.
hello neighbor! didn't know there were clams on the Babocomari. Saw an interesting snail in the St David Cienega a few years ago. I wonder if there are clams in the San Pedro? never heard of that.

Comments have been pretty much positive regarding Jake's journey. Unfortunately, someone decided to make a somewhat negative comment on this video and made a comparison between Jake's ride and Bernice Ende. This person obviously did not know Bernice or they would have never used her as a comparison. I have entered an excerpt from her writings here. She would have been the first person to applaud Jake for his ride. "I rode year after year, camping at the door steps of the poorest of poor, knocking on the doors of the well to do. Never looking down on anyone, never looking up to anyone. It was a cornucopia of experiences, a hugely enriching time in my life. I came to realize that life without fear was freedom. I finally came to know the quality of life is determined not by the clothes I wear, what kind of home I live in or what kind of vehicle I traveled with. My quality of life is determined essentially by paying attention to what is inside of me. It comes from making the conscious choice to live fully in joy and appreciation making my way ever so slowly down a simple beautiful path." - Bernice Ende
Thank you for defending me and for posting the excerpt. It's a book I'd like to read when I get home and she sounds like a great woman. Thanks for the video. I watch wilderness riders so your first video came up on my homepage. I have watched from the beginning. Now you're making me jealous. I once trailed my young performance horses to calm them down and bond with them. Explaining what it is like to trailride is like someone trying to explain to me how much fun golf is.
I went into a Facebook forum on the Appalachian trail and posed the question as to why horses weren't allowed. You would thought that I swore in church from the hate filled, profanity laced responses. I got the same answers as some of these commenter's made. One guy suggested that it was closed to horses because the bears might attack the horses. I asked him if he had ever heard of Montana. Many acted as if the trail magically appeared in 1925. Both the Pacific Crest trail (PCT), and the Continental Divide trails allow horses. As far as areas that are impassable to horses I point to the P.C.T. alternate routes were constructed so that both Horses, and Hikers could avoid these obstacles. My cousin used to be affiliated with the Back Country Horsemen in Washington. After Mount Saint Helen's blew the Back Country Horsemen went in and built the trails in the in the newly made National Park. Shortly after they finished building the trails the Department of the Interior closed the park to horses. I emailed some Big Wig at the Department of the Interior concerning horses on the A.T. I was given the same party line as to why. The A.T. was made from a collection of trails some dating back before the white man came on the scene. When horses finally made it to the area both Native Americans and settlers used horses on these trails. I'm sure that the back country horsemen would gladly do trail maintenance and build alternate routes. I think that those who want horses out of public lands are just trail snobs.
Wow, that's really unfortunate but thanks so much for trying to be a voice for horses and horse people in this country. It appears some people want to ignore the fact that this country was literally built on the backs of horses.
