    If you looked up the journey of Poteet, Stallings,Sinclair and Howard. You found out they escaped the dungeon in New Orleans with the help of a Choctaw guard. They made it back to Abingdon three years after they left. As promised, they got land in Sinclair's bottom. Indian attacks caused John Poteet to move to Yanceyville, N.C. His nephew had a plantation with 200 slaves there. Either his wife or his daughter made a boy with a slave. They named the boy Solomon. His son Thomas Richard Perteet moved to Wilkes Co. Ga. with 20 slaves and the boy. Solomon was a brick mason by age 13. At age 18 Thomas Richard gave him his freedman papers. He moved to Alabama and became the most successful freedman in the history of Al. He founded the city of Tuscaloosa.

    Yep. Snakes climb trees.!!! I used to dodge water moccasins when fishing. Any time I went under tree limbs were hairy! I find snakes all over when cleaning property. Be safe. Love and blessings to all.❤

    Beautiful country. Thanks for sharing. Hard to imagine the Holston and Powell valley were full of Elk and Buffalo. The Eastern buffalo were larger than the western variety. The last one was killed about 1810. Made the N.C. newspaper.

    Russell Co. was named after William Russell. He had a 3600-acre land grant from the King of England. His oldest son was with James Boone when was killed. Boone's mother sewed the two boys up in the same quilt and they buried them on a hillside above Blue Spring at Stickleyville. The location has been lost to time. His youngest son was at King's Mountain battle when he was sixteen. He stated in his pension app. that the tree he was behind had the bark peeled away from the bullets. He said he was with Cap. James Poteet at the Yorktown surrender and was close enough to touch Cornwallis with his gunbarrel.

    In Aug. 1799 the 24 year old future king of France visited Abingdon Va. He dined with Maj. James Fulkerson at his home 12 miles from Abingdon 8 miles from the Holston. He stated in his diary that Fulkerson had a large spring above his house and 1000 sugar maple trees. Sounds a lot like the maple farm you visited.

    Your videos are my favortite Monday watch! What do you use to keep mosquitoes from eating your horses alive? It was great to learn of the production of maple syrup in Virginia. I wish there was a way to purchase online. I would very much like to sample it.

    • @jakeharvath
      @jakeharvath  Před 3 měsíci +4

      Mosquitoes haven't been nearly a problem compared to the giant horse flies. We don't have them out in Utah, at least not this many and not this big. Denver and Eddy hate them. Also not a fan of the ticks that I've found on myseld and the boys. We have those in Utah but again, no this many. But hey, it's a small price to pay to be able to be outside every day seeing this beautiful country from the back of a horse. I'm very blessed, bugs and all. :)

    • @nicolaxoxo1
      @nicolaxoxo1 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@jakeharvathtake care with the ticks, in Virginia many carry Lyme disease and other tick borne diseases. My horses both got Lyme’s. Ticks like their tails. I kept a jug of alcohol in the barn and deposited all the ticks in it. IMO Virginia is the best place I have ever lived. Miss it! Are you going thru the Warrenton and Middleburg areas of Virginia? That is horse paradise, my former home

  • @akghound
    @akghound Před 3 měsíci +4

    I'm curious, are you going to ride for a year or to the end of the 7000 miles? Judging by the ground covered so far it appears to me that it's going to take more than a year. It looks like you are going to hit the Rockies about winter time, maybe take a break at the end of fall with a restart in the spring?
    God Bless and Be Well.

    • @jakeharvath
      @jakeharvath  Před 3 měsíci +10

      You, my friend, are very observant. All the planning in the world doesn't determine what actually happens on the trail, as I have come to learn. The original goals of this journey have changed, mostly because of all the kind and generous people I have met on a daily basis and the amazing experiences I couldn't have even dreamed of having before I left home. So the time and distance of Year of the Mustang will be changing and I'll be talking about that in a video very soon. Of course, my mission of showing the world the value and usefulness of mustangs remains the same, and I hope my horses have done that, regardless of miles utimately traveled. Thank you for your support and encouragement. It means a lot!
