  • Explore Shaker City from the air. We'll see the old and new schools, downtown, residential and surrounding area. Benito has a population just less than 400 people and is a place many more call home.

I went to school there circa 1970, first at the old elementary (an epic stone building) and later the collegiate (we watched game 8 of the '72 Canada/Russia series in the gym on a fuzzy little TV). Right on the corner adjacent to the new skate park was the old hockey/curling rink - one of those "half-can" metal buildings - a decrepit old barn that reeked of cigarette smoke - they let us school kids skate on the hockey rink there every Friday during the winter. The town had a real "Mayberry" feel to it back then. I remember: the Macleod's store, Rexall drugs being in 3 different buildings (it was a favourite hang out because they had comic books and model kits!), the old library, Hall's grocery store, the movie theatre that was always up for sale, and the old rodeo grounds with the "big" wooden grandstand (one of the young local guys died there when he fell off of a horse during a race). I remember the old hospital too, but I struggle to recall where it was located exactly. Ha, I also remember when the "new" medical office opened on one of the corners of Main Street... the old doctor smoking a cigarette while he took my temperature. ;P

Thanks for sharing. Lots of great memories as this is where my families roots started.
