  • In March of 1990, something miraculous occurred: Two Game Boy games revolving around the theme of penguins appeared in Japan. But which was the better penguin adventure?

Penguin Wars is one of my favorites. My mom and I would play it on long trips.

I never heard of Penguin Wars before. What a wholesome game! Penguins make everything better.

There's a remake on Switch that has been released since this video was created!

Penguin-Kun Wars was also ported do the MSX ... and there's a sequel to it which I am nearly 100% sure it was exclusive to the MSX, called Penguin Kun Wars 2. It has a lot more of characters and you play in different worlds (underwater for example changes the speed of the balls... they went a lot more crazy on the character desing on the sequel, one of the opponents, for example, is a centipede which can basically throw a lot of balls at the same time... It's a very nice game but it's hard as nails!

UPL is still fondly remembered in Japan, mainly for their arcade shooters.

Look at the immense history of classic games us old guys have made for the ages. So many videos exist today that didn’t years ago. So awesome. So much history won’t be forgotten

I never liked the GB version of Penguin Land, since you can barely see below you or the other side of the stage. The other versions let you see a good portion of the level.
Penguin Wars is fun no matter the system.

Dude I have a bootleg GameBoy game that has 54 games in 1 that my dad got overseas in the navy in the early 90’s. Penguin Land is one of the games on it. I remember playing it and other games I’ve seen from videos you have on here. If you interested I’ll lend it if you think it be interesting about GameBoy bootleg history

Penguin Wars looks great. Pong clones are usually fun. Played a ton of it Commander Keen's minigame

Console wars talk notwithstanding, every Nintendo platform got a game that had been previously published (if not developed) by Sega:
The Super Famicom saw a release of Columns. It was a small release, though, and in Japan only. Not a lot of people know about it.
The N64 and Game Boy Color received ports of Puyo Puyo~n after Sega had published it on Dreamcast. This is even more surprising as Sega had purchased the rights to the series back around 1998 according to Wikipedia, and the existence of a release of Puyo Puyo BOX means that Sega games have shown up on every (major, Japanese*) competitor's console.
    * The exceptions I can find are the Virtual Boy, Pippin, CD-i (which had some Sega support planned and cancelled according to Wikipedia), PC-FX, Neo Geo (which I struggle to count, being an arcade machine first and foremost), 3DO, Jaguar/CD, and Amiga CD32.

    • @rafaellima83
      @rafaellima83 Před 8 lety +3

The Amiga computer had lots of Sega games (And the american version of Afterburner was even distributed by Sega itself - I believe also Outrun).
All those games are playable on the CD32 if you can manage to make the console load the games (by burning the games on a CD with a proper load - lots of people done that).
So, well, you have Sega games on the CD32... sort of :)

Commenting before finishing the video so I'm expected to get proved wrong: I wonder if Othello and Penguins were used because they were both very obviously two-color objects. Nice to have when you've got no color screen

Wow; Penguin Wars looks super cool. I never owned a Game Boy; my 3ds is actually the first portable game system I've ever owned. Several of my friends had one, however, and I don't remember anything on them looking like that. That's actually a fairly convincing 3d perspective hack, done on hardware that was about a step up from an Atari 2600. Really impressive.
The commercial toss-ins were cool, too; I remember that ad for the dude hitting himself in the head with a dead squirrel to see colour. I miss early 90s 'tude-based advertising, if only because so much of that aesthetic has seemingly become codified in today's marketing, only without the fun of the time. Maybe it's just that I'm more cynical than I was as a ten year old (though not much; I was a rather put-upon, Charlie Brown-like child), and that's why everything around me seems so much more cynical as well.
