Colliers Moss, formerly known as Bold Moss, had been turned from a moss land into wasteland after years of dumping from the local mines. The site had become a problem for local people, attracting anti-social behaviour, and damaging local pride and aspirations.
In the early 1990's local charity, Groundwork, came up with a plan to use nature to restore the landscape for local people. The combination of nature, community action, and employment training for local people became a model for Groundwork to restore many similar large sites.
Thirty years later the site is a green oasis, teeming with nature, and is an asset for local people. The site is now managed by the Mersey Forest charity. Meanwhile, Groundwork has grown to work changing places and lives through thousands of project across the UK, with sister organisations doing the same in Japan and the USA.

Recently moved next door. Really excited to see the place develop. Still young woodland but plenty of life already. Had some good sightings on my camera traps and seen other people's out there too. Would love to have some involvement on any current projects or spend time with people who know the site intimately. Interested in the work going on north of the railway and whether linked to the reserve or just agricultural work from the farmer.
