  • Crab fishing here at piers in Southern California at Newport Beach is a fun activity with my son. Many crabs were landed in our crab net, using old pork and later squid, as well as a few other interesting catches. If you go, be prepared to draw a crowd! Still trying to catch that monster...

    Rope: amzn.to/3Wv7GeC (100ft minimum; I tried 40 ft and it didn't work)
I've caught crab off Newport and Balboa Piers here in California with both styles. The small one is very light and easy to store, but large crabs can climb out of it. I recommend adding a squirrel feeder/bird feeder style cage for the bait to be secured in, and tying it shut with a piece of fishing line (otherwise you'll lose much more bait, as I found out in today's video). There are rock crab, kelp crab, and also sorts of other crabs potenially waiting to be caught.

When I was a teenager about 40 years ago there was a run of very large squid that ran in Newport. We rented the same hose on the sand back then every summer and that experience was insane. The entire pier was shoulder to shoulder with people catching the biggest squid I had ever seen and people were pulling them out of the water constantly. I remember a squid that was changing color and size so rapidly that it exploded with nothing left but the tentacles left on the hook. The fillets we got from those squid were the size of a skateboard and we tenderized them and made tempura, steaks and my favorite which was piccata. Back then my sister and I could go out into waist deep water and hunt for clams with our feet and in no time have enough to make a huge pot of chowder.

That sounds amazing!! Times sure have changed. The beach feels...sterile at times.

Add corn meal with lots of garlic powder and little water cook it it gets hard like rubber. Put it in a long sock and tie it on trap. Works great.

Hi! Have you tried fishing at night for crabs? That’s when they’re more active. Also, if you have a lobster card, Spiny Lobsters are in-season right now if you happen to catch one while crabbing.

Thanks for the tips! I have not tried it at night, that's a good idea. I do have a lobster card, I usually dive for them but maybe I'll catch one in the net. Have you seen large ones caught at night?

How long did you let it sit down there before you decided to pull it up?

Nice video. Have you tried using chicken? I seemed to do better when I used chicken over squid or mackerel.

I have, and it worked, as long as it was thawed out well
