Chuck box! Patrol box! Camp kitchen! Overkill!

- I love backpacking and my wife does not love backpacking. Something about digging a hole to poop in is a deal-breaker for her. As a compromise, we've settled on car camping. It's something we now enjoy doing together. Something else we enjoy doing together is cooking. It didn't take long for us to realize we could up our car camping kitchen situation with a chuck box.

Finally! Someone who calls it a patrol box. Reminds me of Scouts
I like the idea of no hinges to wear out. Now to design it as a indoor/outdoor kitchen for a truck camper. So it sets on the side overhang and doesn't interfere with the doorway.
WOW
After your explanation on moving parts I give this an expert quality
Stunning
Subscribed after the “peeling off the dried glue” comment. You’re not the only one who grew up doing that. Very cathartic. BTW... excellent craftsmanship on the chuck box. Simple and elegant design.
I'm a master cabinetmaker. If you don't remove excess glue, that spot will never finish. Finished product like camp kitchen is easier to clean and will last far longer than unfinished product.
Very simple and elegant design. I'm a cabinetmaker and simple designs are the best for continual use. Well done sir.
Protip. Use paste wax on all sliding tracks and the edges of the panels to fit into them so that they will slide easily and smoothely. EDIT: use painters tape on the sides of the box when you paint so you don't have to be quite as careful when you're painting.
Brilliant! Love the intricate yet simple design. The lack of hardware is excellent.
Nice ! Your video is well done and explains so many details that others do not. But first, let me compliment you on your workshop. During my 50+ years working in construction type work, I always stole (with my eyes) ideas from others to use at home in my workshop. You my friend, get the 1st Prize for the best home work shop in all these years I have ever seen. Clean, organized, and a cozy place to work, all at the same time. Perfect ! and my hat is off to you. Again, thank you for the video on the chuck box. I will be copying some of your ideas on my new chuck box.
Hey, you built that much better than an IKEA set up. Well built, but simple design. My grandpa, and our great grandfather from Denmark were cabinet makers. Your work is top notch.
Love ur sense of humor!!!
Awesome design on the chuck box - and the vid is great - looking forward to the next one!
Nice job, you cannot beat a nice camping kitchen when you are out in the woods!!
Nice, love the serving tray, side extensions, and stand ideas. Outstanding build!
Best design of a chuck box i've seen. So cool! Well done!
What a great design. Thanks for sharing.
Really good idea. I will need to think and adjust for a temporary solution to a semi permernant situation. Cheers for the inspiration
That looks like a dream workshop. Wow!
That is a really nice design. I went with a propane griddle, myself, as opposed to the gas burners. I find the griddle suits a lot of menu items for breaky, lunch, or dinner.
Best I've seen!!!! Got to show it to my father!!!!! Amazing
This is super satisfying!
That is so cool!! Excellent kit!
Hello fella, great job on the outside kitchen. Just when I thought your video couldn't get any better, you advertise that you have a forester. Top man, I have the 3rd gen diesel forester diesel 6speed manual. The kitchen and the car are a match made in heaven. Total admiration from the UK 🇬🇧
Thanks for the kind words. I wish my Forester was as cool as yours. 👍🏼
That is awesome man! I really like the fact that it wont rattle
Parabéns por seu trabalho 👏👏👏, muito obrigado por compartilhar.
Too brilliant. Great work
Beautiful Craftmanship!
Absolutely brilliant
Nice project. I like how it fits in a Forester.
Good job. Very effective presentation.
I love your workshop!
Ohh to be rich enough to buy all that equipment to woodwork like this. Day dreaming.
Beautifully crafted.
Great build out!
Great job I bet a lot of people would love to buy one
Great design!
Well done!!! I found that the bottom of my Coleman stove got very hot during a prolonged cooking session. In fact, I melted the top of a plastic cooler. If yours gets hot also, you might want something to insulate it from your wooden top, or perhaps something to elevate it slightly to allow airflow between the bottom of the stove and the wooden surface. Happy camping.
That’s not something I’ve experienced so far, but we’ll keep an eye out for it. 👍🏼
Nicely done.
Sweet! My carpentry skills are nowhere near yours so I won't even try to make this. BUT, I will be envious the rest of my life. Great box and well thought out.
Well done!
I am so jealous. I want one so bad but have zero woodworking skills. Lol. Great job!
That is awesome!
That’s an awesome chuck box 😍💕👍🏽🇦🇺
Great work i love the design! I will be making a chuck box with alot of your "harware-less" components. Brilliant! Im going to incorporate some durable wagon wheels and removable wheel barrow handles for ease of transport at music festivals
Love it !!
Nicely done! We did something similar but added thin stainless steel to the top. Super easy to clean and even cut on, with cheap knives of course.
Didn’t add much weight either. Well worth the effort and expense.
That’s a solid idea. I was thinking about laminate like a countertop, but the SS would be more durable AND classier.
@@ImGonnaMake,
How about making the bottom of the “serving tray” out of either a plastic cutting board or a hardwood laminate that you keep treated with butcher block oil? Then do the cutting on the bottom side, turn it back upright to serve. Keeps the cutting scars out of sight when you serve and you can sand it smooth again w/o disassembly if it gets too worn. Also easier clean after cutting.
Marine Star board is a knife safe cutting surface
I use to do the Elmer's glue thing when I was a kid.😀
I think it’s kind of universal!
I love the concept--especially no hindges.
Fantastic!
Pretty sweet!!
I love this !!!!
Excellent...thank you.
Cool, you are the Man👍
Super nice. I don't have skills to make a nice camp kitchen like that.
Awww man, I laughed too many times watching this. I became the 1,000 👍🏼 when you said you’ll use the stand to fill with empty beer cans if you’ve got a picnic table 🤣
Aww shucks, thanks.
Those four triangles break the natural suction action that happens when fitting pieces together. The sanding also allows more air to escape to prevent this.
Outstanding
This is badass. I have zero skills in this category! 🤣
Nice one. 👍
Very nice! 😎👍🏻
Excellent.
Really nice 👍
I love these boxes, I would love to own one and probably wouldn’t use it much as I’m into canoe camping.
I get it! We use this just for car camping. My wife doesn’t enjoy pooping in the woods, so the backpacking and kayak camping I do alone. MUCH different setup for those trips … as you know. I’m just happy to be camping, so I like to have all the bases covered.
You'll never misplace your glue spreader, as long as you stay cautious around the saws.
True!
I've watched a lot of these videos too. And I've come up with a great plan. Step 1: have a half million dollar shop.
@@nomadmarauder-dw9re That's a great first step.
That’s such a great idea, I’ll take two ha ha
That is genius!!
Хорошая работа. Мастер молодец!
Хорошая идея! И отличное исполнение!
The minute you said, "the joy of peeling dried glue off your finger," I had to hit like.
Clamp envy 😳😳
Zuu..ish...Zuu...ish...thanks for sharing this amazing job!
Spoon spatula is salad spoon, great kitchen
Salad spoon works for me!
Wow... nice.
Love it. On my shortlist. New sub
Hope to see more!
Brilhant!
Awesome work mate! All you forgot was a bottle opener and a fire blanket!
Gotta save something for version 2.0, right?
@@ImGonnaMake pls upload part 2
Great chuck box and video. Ill have a crack at one over here in Australia 🇦🇺.
I hope you do make one! Thank for watching and best of luck on the build.
Very kool build! Do you have any plans on this build? I have always wanted a chuck box but never have seen one like this and its awesome? If plans are available please let me know how to get them. Thanks!!
Elmers glue fingers! Yes, I remember.
Best design yet !!! Ahh , you work for IKEA !!! 🤣🤣👍👍
🤙 awesome
spreading and peeling off glue from your hands was a rite of passage in my generation.
A great Chuck box , do you have a plan and cut list for it ? I live in Ireland and drive a small jeep, this would be great for me and my boys on our weekends away.👍👍👍
Love it! Will you make me one? Lol
Those Koozies tell me you're a fellow Iowan. Good work on the box
Close! One state to the east, but I visit often for the good beer. 😁
Not just you! 😂
Great build. Compact, but not too compact. A place for all you need. Would also be interested if you created plans. And love your workshop.
Thank you! I’m hearing all the requests for plans, so I’m seriously considering it. Right now I’m focusing on keeping my day job AND still getting time in the shop AND making some more videos. I love my shop, too … it’s kind of unreal to me, after 20+ years of having drag all my tools out to the driveway from the corners of the garage. Projects were way less fun back then.
@@ImGonnaMake I fully understand. One question - did you use 1/2" or 3/4" ply for your build?
@@noeldeweese4975 Mostly 1/2" and some 1/4" on the less structural pieces.
Can you share your measurements.thanks Beautiful job.
At 3:25, don't do that. Wife will find out you CAN have too many clamps.😂
Nice looking Chuck Box . You said it weigh`s a lot . What would the Chuck Box and Table / Stand weigh without Cookware then weight with Cookware .
This is amazing. This would be great for our Troop. Would you mind sharing your plans/dimensions?
Thanks! I’ve never made a set of plans before, I usually just make it up as I go along. I seem to be getting more and more requests for plans, so maybe I’ll see what I can put together.
Too bad you didn't find a secondary use for the front panel. A slight design adjustment could allow it to be used as a lower shelf
There’s a secondary use for it. It holds stickers for the places we’ve camped. When it’s full, it will go on the wall and I’ll make a new front panel. But to your point, the guy at Blue Sky Kitchen just slips the panel between the box and the stand and there’s an easy shelf.
I like the corner spacers on the table. They'll help keep it square too. I'm digging the plastic bins too. Perfect!
Liked your work, but the volume of your speaking is different from your tool volume. Had to keep changing my volume, if you know what I mean. But subscribed anyway. Thank you Wiz
Here in Australia a company called " Drifta " has a camp kitchen with metal foldout legs and wooden box with drawers etc. and a foldout table and also has an L shaped extension .Been making them for decades
This is awesome, how much does it weigh fully loaded?
Any plans on making these for customers because I would love to purchase one
I did the glue thing .making or finger prints.
3:24 I agree! I mean why use 68 clamps when 67 will do, right?!
Hi! could you tell me the weight of the box without cooking utensils, etc and once all of the stuff is inside?
WOW - GREAT JOB. any plans/measurements? i know it was built to fit your camp stove but would like a head start on making my own. last question for now, how long did it take from start to using it? THANX, again, GREAT work.
Thanks for the kind words. I’ll try to get some very rough plans together for this, but the task keeps taking a back seat to my day job and trying to get some more videos out. I know there’s interest, so it’s on my radar. From start to finish for me was about 3 months, but this was a side project that I worked on when I could. After sharing this on Reddit, someone built one just off of the info in the video in about 4 days. 😳
Awesome design. Will you be selling plans?
Thanks! I might, since I’m getting some requests for plans. Stay tuned!
Nice job on the design and execution.
