Not exactly that, Spanish territories had a Dutch and German origin king and dinasty. Prior to becoming kings of Castille, and other Spanish kingdoms (the term and country of Spain did not exist on that time), the Austrian dinasty was heir of all the Netherlands. Thus ironically, the Spaniards were fighting to remain the Dutch territories in hands of Dutch dinasty. BTW, this film is awfully made and it's plagued of enormous historical errors.

For all I know the Spanish tercios didn’t use bows in warfare and specially at this period. We would use muskets, arquebuses and maybe some crossbows, we were never a big on archery.

Name of the movie = Kenau... This would be the woman given orders to the other defenders... Her story (although heavily romanized) is well known in the Netherlands and Flanders and her name is the word we use in Dutch for 'a feisty woman' and/or 'a manly woman'... She has a statue close to the railway station of Haarlem...

After the Spanish stood at the Gates of the Fortress of the Dutch City Naarden, they managed to talk themselves in, by assuring the Dutch Citizens nothing and no one would harm them.
The opposite happened, and after that no other Dutch City would make talk with the Spanish , and many got besieged, like Alkmaar and Leiden.
I got baptized in a Church that used to be way bigger , but the Spanish demolished like 2/3rd of it ,and used the materials to besiege the City of Alkmaar.

Meh, as many things in history it didn't really matter. I don't think many people in Europe would be willing to fright for religion. The biggest problem was that catholicism is and was too centralized and that regions far away felt left out. Also the flow of money from Northern European cities to the south European kingdoms didn't improve things.

Strength of the Spanish Empire LOL
The Spanish Empire would have been more powerful and long lasting if they didn't blow their fortune all on fruitless wars.
It's exactly the other way around: the daring and heroic protestants stopped Spanish dominance over Europe and started infiltrating their overseas empire with their own trading posts in the Caribbeans, Brazil, Southern Africa and of course South East Asia.

Why are they still firing at the walls and towers while they're already assaulting it with ladders? That's extremely stupid, they would hit their own men. And how do cannon of that era manage to hit the gateway so accurately in darkness? If that would be realistic it would have been a viable tactic in sieges, which in turn would have led to completely different design of gateways in fortifications.

    • @Briselance

Fairly close range. They would have laid their guns during daylight and fired blind assuming that a certain percentage of shots would miss. However, the defenders would have countered by filling the gateway with earth which would have blocked the gate and not been vunerable to cannon shot.
One nice touch of this movie is that the cannons actually recoil which is rare in many movies.

    je je je.....
In 1981, I was militar at Regimiento Milan, Spain.
Founded at Milan, Italy, like Tercio Viejo del Milanesado in 1535.
In 2035 it will have V Centuries.
Archery...I don't use it. And I am sorry to think my ancestors non.
Crossbows, yes. But only against the Aztecs. Ah, no tercio has ever set foot in America. Reiments, yes. When France changed Canada, Mississippi, Missouri to Spain against the island of Hispaniola,
some companies of my French regiment sent from Spain.
They brought up the mississipi with a cannon. Arrived in Canada, they took posesion of Canada in the name of Spain, warned of this the English, who did not think of meeting us at all. Then the Spaniards buried the cannon, and descended the mississipi founding 6 cities called Toledo, so 1 in Canada.
to explain the disappearance of the cannon, they said they were attacked by the Indians, which was false. The cannon was too bulky. In the USA, today we speak of "conquistadors carved of gold attacked by Indians, and immeasurable riches entering the north of Mississippi ...."
