    Got to love the historical accuracy in this film. Oh wait, there isn’t any...by the time of the Crusades the ‘Vikings’ had become completely Christian and actually joined the crusades.

    Fun film, but was RIFE with historical inaccuracies. I understand lowering the number of people defending Rochester Castle to heighten the drama, but they lowered the actual number too much. Historically there weren't "less than twenty men" defending this castle. From what I've heard, there were actually somewhere around 95 Knights and 45 Men-At-Arms defending Rochester. They were still outnumbered by their attackers, but not as much as is shown in this film.

    • @morrogin5986
      @morrogin5986 Před 4 lety +4

      also, at the time the castle was part of a town iirc....so they didnt even get that right

    • @mr.bluefox3511
      @mr.bluefox3511 Před 4 lety

      So at least the castle had around 140 men defending it, they are outnumbered for sure ...
      ... but Knight, and Men-at-arms !?? Now that was impresive, it make more sence to me when they manage to hole it for that long.
      ( Did most of them count as archer ? I thought they should have a numbers of dedicated archer to men the wall, while the rest will fill the gap in there defendsive )

    • @kevinnorwood8782
      @kevinnorwood8782 Před 4 lety +1

      @@mr.bluefox3511 Well, that's the thing. In actual history, John WON the Siege of Rochester. The film implies that the siege lasted for many months, but in actual history, the siege lasted about seven WEEKS, and Rochester fell because the defenders surrendered out of hunger (they had run out of food supplies and simply couldn't fight any longer because they were starving).

      Most film from this time isn't very historically accurate, it's something we history buffs have had to accept for a long time now. Though I'd like to point out that just because they were created 100 years apart doesn't mean that they were never used concurrently. The Dane axe is a damn good axe. If it ain't broke don't fix it. So it's not impossible for people to have been still using them by the time the longsword was created.

    It's a good entertaining movie. But I've seen how trebuchet's work in action. They're less than impressive although they can do damage to wooden fornications & flesh. Against stone walls less effective but perhaps over time with repeated blows against a single point could knock a small hole in a narrow wall. I doubt they trebuchets & other medieval siege engines had the range shown in this movie. Perhaps 100-200 yards max. Regular bows (not longbows) probably only effective to 150 yard max. Medieval armies fought much closer than movies would have you believe. Historically, digging under the wall & weakening the ground underneath was a more effective siege tactic.
