As a Romanian, I absolutely love how you described the "cocalari". They're obnoxious people and I always hate it, when I see one on the streets. I also agree on the bureaucracy part, that we should digitize more procedures. I'm not sure the example you gave with the immigration office was the best one. The fact they only accept Non-EU citizens a couple days a week, might simply be because they don't expect so many foreigners in Cluj.
As for the language, almost all languages have some sort of exception or rule which has to be memorized. But they're not all required for day-to-day conversations or getting by. Out of all the romance languages, I think French is the hardest to learn.

Hey János. I've been a resident of Cluj all my life and a fan of your channel for some time. As someone who just recently discovered you moved here, it's quite surreal seeing you walking around in front of the apartment block in Mărăști which until recently was my home, all the way to my current workplace which is in Iulius Mall. :))
I feel your pain when it comes to the experiences you had. The last time I went via bus or train to both Timisoara and Bucharest was in 2018, and to Brasov in 2013 (took me 12 hours!). I have been to Brasov since but only via car. The only city which I still travel to by bus is Sibiu. It's about 3 hours, and at least part of the journey is manageable across the highway.
Don't get me started on old people. There is an old lady exactly like the one you described living in the apartment beneath me. She seems quite senile, so half the time when either me or my girlfriend bump into her in the stairway she doesn't recognize us, even though we have been neighbors for almost 3 years now. This obviously makes her pretty distrustful, always asking who we are and what our business is, threatening to call the police on us is not out of the ordinary. :))
If you ever find yourself having to sleep overnight in Iulius Mall waiting for the migration office to accept you, feel free to come by Leonidas chocolate stand on the top floor for a chat. I'll ease your agony. :))

I took the train from Timisoara to Bucharest once. When I arrived I canceled my ticket for the ride back home and booked a flight instead lol. Best decision ever. Also whenever I traveled by train I would buy my tickets online but so very few people do that, that they actually print the list with your names and they search for you in the whole train lol, they put a wrriten signature beside your name once they checked your ticket and they also sign your ticket. I always thought it was so funny how seriously they were taking the whole thing. And talking about bureaucracy, on one occasion the train controller got controlled. I also had the unpleasant surprise to realize that after 5 years abroad, the train that used to take 3 hours to go to my hometown from Timisoara now takes 4 hours and a half. It's evolution, only backwards! Jokes aside, I do believe the country will evolve, it already changed so much (for the better) in the last 10-15 years.

I have my wife's 80+ year old hungarian grandma who lives in Romania and who mostly forgot which field of hers she sold and which one is still hers.. Her husband who spoke Romanian, but died decades ago..So when I went there as ' a young man' was given a mission by her... To go and get the needed information from the 'officials'. At this point I entered the Romanian burocracy without being able to speak Romanian. (I speak hungarian and English). In the village I went to the officials and they told me that they do not have this information (said in hungarian) and btw the son of my vife's grandma is a son of a bi...:)) Also that I have to go to a town...where I went.. In that town (Marghita) the office (land registry)I had to go was to be open few hours later.. At this point god looked down on me and a Romanian woman approached me saying that she heard when I told to my wife (in hungarian) that this mission is gonna fail.. She spoke hungarian almost perfectly.. She guided me to a young real estate agent who she knew can get things done and also speaks englis..The guy was also very nice and helped me with his contacts in the land registry as he is in a daily contact with them through business and knows the people.. He called someone in the land registry (probably during lunch break) and 20 minutes later he showed on his monitor the history of buy/sale/court judgements of thet field in question back to the 1800s...
At the end I asked the guy how much I owe him.. He said Zero. I tried to leave money on his table..he gave it back.
So I completed the mission with the help of the locals and find the bureaucracy efficient and very informative there. :) (never really meet the appropriate officials, but got everything I needed)

In good Romanian tradition I pulled up with 50-60 pages worth on documents, you never know, they might want to see my kindergarten documents. Anyhow I made it to the desk of one of the office workers and as per expected she started asking for document this and document that. My English boyfriend was with me as we traveled togheter to the consulate and he wanted to experience a bit of the Romanian office feel (don't ask me, English people are blissfully unaware of the nightmare of bureaucracy, their system is very straight forward). At one point the lady asked me for a photocopy of my mother's ID card, which I happened to have. I say yes and prepare to pull it out when she just jumps to another document which I readily produce. After all was done and dusted and we were out getting some food my boyfriend was, as expected, very confused 😅 Since then we refer to a photocopy of my moms ID as a trick question inside joke 😆

It's certainly true in places. But the reality is that there are so many IT companies in Romania and so many Romanians in IT, the internet infrastructure was heavily pushed ahead by big companies. Romanian is the third most spoken language in Microsoft, behind Chinese and Indian dialects. That's frightening.

Back in the 90s and early 2000s, there were no major ISPs, most telecoms were sticking to the more lucrative telephone business as computer ownership was seen as too low (people were very poor back then and computers were very expensive).
Due to this, small ISPs appeared all over the place due to a void in legislation that allowed anyone to enter the market and also use the street poles as they see fit. These ISPs were very small, usually only having a few hundred clients and being ran by 1-2 people. back in the day, even with very small fees, these guys could earn $1k+ per person, which was multiple times the national average income. Given that 100kbps was the norm from the start and given that any tech issues were solved very fast as the ISP guy was literally your neighbor, made this model of business really popular, with ISPs fighting for clients, bringing prices down and services up.
It's only later when big companies came in, started buying these small businesses but some would not sell and would continue to function for many years. In the end, changes in legislation eventually killed most small ISPs that survived, but only after setting the bar really high in terms of internet speed and competitive pricing.
The big ISPs merged and right now, there's a bit of a monopoly (one very big provider and a telecom company as the competition); so things may change in time, but right now, you can easily get 1GBit/s for 7-8 EUR and for a bit more, in big cities, you can even get 2, 5 and even 10 GBit/s connections.

3:05 We call them microbus, what is that marshrutka thing supposed to be? Generally, microbuses are the preferred option to go from a large city to the small village of Bumfuck, Nowhere; using them for inter-city transit is a bit weird to me.
Another thing: there are 7 trains between Cluj and Timisoara. Unfortunately, they take between 8 to 10 hours; how they manage that on a 4-hour road, I have no idea (prolly by stopping in every little village). Going from Cluj to Iasi takes a similar amount of time, and it's twice as long and going across mountains...
On a minor upside, train tickets don't need reservation, you can just go to the train station and buy a ticket up to half-hour before the train leaves. They're discounted if you get them earlier.

As for the grammatical part, I do feel your pain. That is why not even all Romanians know where to stick the grammar. One thing that may lack in Romanian is accents in words. That came to my mind when I saw the lowest word from the right @ 1:35, that is "acelor", which would approximately translate in English "of them" (it also depends on the context). I mean, a native (read - some natives) can spot the pronunciation in the context, but it can be tricky. That is because acelor may mean "of the needles" if you pronounce it as aćelor. To get the meaning above @ 1:35, you have to pronounce it as acelór. In short, the rules are easy, but there are loads of exceptions.

Bucharest is the capital of Romania due of the geography. in middle of the country we have the chain of Carpathian mountains, so is difficult to develop here large cities very well connected to rest of the country. Bucharest is placed on a flat terrain a good place to build houses, streets, boulevards, highways and airports. Proximity to the Danube river brought many economical advantages. I remind you that many capitals of Europe are very close to Danube: Belgrade, Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava.
