Most drummers have an opinion on how this pattern should be played, but in reality it all comes down to the vibe and feel of the tune-there is never really just one way to play something. In this lesson we create a one-handed sixteenth-note groove on the hi-hat and explore the typical sonic changes you should be able to apply.

I like this video and another similar one I watched. It's an interesting world to explore small differences in grooves to see how they affect things like physical balance as well as the volume balance between the limbs. I think that stuff is part of why we can all play the same rhythms but we don't all sound the same playing them.

Excellent breakdown of the subtleties of maintaining focus and how micro adjustments can alter the feel ... very useful video!

Gotta (respectfully) disagree with your cross stick recommendation of landing the "butt end between two tension rods" with "the tip not leaving the head" (but translates to the hand staying on and muffling the head) ... landing the stick dead on top of a tension rod with limited contact of your hand to head makes a much more cutting and vibrant sound.

I wish my dear old teacher Al Hobbs were still alive to tell you how wrong you are. He taught me this a very long time ago. The dead spot is over a tension rod my man. Good luck out there.
