In this episode we not only explore the background and characters behind the novel Rebecca, but we also explore Daphne du Maurier’s life and sexuality.
Daphne believed she should have been born male, and we will discover how this influenced her, and which real life events inspired her creations.
Join me as we wander through the haunted ruins of Manderley.

Not doing well on the dosh front currently, but I will when I can do.
Hello buddy 😃👍👍👍🎉.
It's actually pronounced foy not Fowey.
I have stayed in the area lots of times, my great great grandparents were Cornish.
Lovely video x

My landlady is 102 years old and cannot see well. Daphne DuMaurier is her favourite author. We are listening to this together. Thank you Oddie, you've made her day.

My neighbor will be 102 in Oct... She only watches westerns... My neighbor on the other side is her sister... She'll be 88 in Oct. ! I couldn't be in a better place. 😊 Except, MY BEAUTIFUL ENGLAND ! 😘😘😘
I think the most tragic part was how she thought she encoraged her dad to abuse her. You just know he fed her that nonsense. "I can't help myself, you looked so pretty and alluring." And she believed it was her fault, that she had any control over his urges. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Ans unfortunately still happening way more often than any human admits to because it means????? But it is absolutely the truth. Therez more men pervert than NOT.
@@christinedowie2859 I disagree with that generalization.
@@christinedowie2859 And women.
Exactly. Poor Daphne. No wonder she escaped into the world of being a boy.
and the complexity of her gender identity. To grow up being told you should have been a boy, such a complex psyche she had. Having relationships with women but despising gay people as her father did, he has a lot to answer for.
Her father's "if only she had been a boy" sounds like a 'I couldn't help myself' excuse. (Also confirmed by, among other things, by his reaction to Daphne falling in love.)
Incest 😱😭
This is one of my husband’s favourite novels. He introduced me to it when we first met. You provided a lot of information about de Maurier’s personal life that I had no idea about.
Highly recommend Piers Dudgeon's books if you'd like to find out more about her and her family!
Is there anything more lovley than relaxing to Oddie's videos.
❤🎉❤
You are so kind :)
So true. He has such a calming effect with his voice that it is an impossibility for one to feel any anxiety while listening to one of his stories.
I agree. He makes me feel like i am in the story and i feel like i know the persons in the stories. Very unique one of a kind storyteller.
He is by far the best historian and narrator on youtube. Yes, such a soothing voice. Truly sends you into a relaxed aura...He is a fellow Aussie originally from Melbourne, ( I think) and now lives in Europe.
The novel “Rebecca” was on the reading list in my high school- just one of the many novels I read for book reports. The writing and story were so fascinating and when I saw the old movie of the same title, it became one of my favorites. Thank you for this thorough, well-written stroll down Memory Lane! I knew nothing about duMaurier. Very enjoyable.
Very glad you enjoyed it Anita, thank you for reaching out.
This was really interesting, thank you. One of my very elderly neighbours here in Cornwall told me that when she was young she had known Daphne's family and spent time with them, she did night watch during the war with Daphne's sister on one occasion. She said Daphne wasn't as friendly and was a little more reserved with everyone. I wished I'd asked her more at the time, I bet she had some tales to tell.
I appreciate that, thank you very much.
Thank you also for sharing that, very interesting.
When I was just starting out as a proofreader at G.P. Putnam and sons publishers we got the manuscript for her last novel, World Without End (1979). There was such a stir about getting this manuscript, and we were told that she was a legendary writer. The book was strangely compelling, about unrequited but loyal love over a lifetime, and I never forgot it
Fascinating, did you ever do any work with her short stories? Breakdown etc?
Oddie you always tell these stories with such a caring nature. What a very sad and confused woman she was. Very sad. You put such alot of work into your presentations. There is no one who does it better
As always beautifully told and I thank you for keeping us entertained. Have a lovely week and keep well.
Totally agree!!!
That is very kind of you Julie and it really makes my day, that my efforts are so appreciated - I thank you sincerely.
thank you kindly!
I also loved her novel "Frenchman's Creek". It had everything… romance, adventure, intrigue, and much more. "Jamaica Inn" was another terrific yarn. Daphne certainly had an amazing gift.
Her short stories are also great
Rebecca was such a great movie & Joan Fontaine was perfect for the part. I love the older movies-they are so much better than todays films.
Fontaine NAILED IT. As did Judith Anderson!
I know right
It was a great book.
You are right
Amen.especially because they knew the English language and how to use it.
One of my favorite movies. Thank you for sharing Daphne's story. Life does imitate art at times. Beautifully done Oddie, love the music as well. ❤️
Thanks for your kind words Liz, that's so nice of you.
Happy Father's Day from the U.S.!😊 and thank you Oddie, you really brought her to life with such personal details. Her relationship with her Father was very disturbing😱 and left her with terrible scars that lasted til the end
Thank you so much for reaching out with your kind feedback 😊
I wonder did she imagine most of this about her father, she always seemed a little bit over the top to me
Oddie, Rebecca is one of my favourite novels. I have read it 3 times and watched all the versions of the movie. It is an addictive read. The first time I read it , I was 14 years old and couldn't eat or sleep until I finished reading the book. My mom was very upset at me for not eating. I had a flashlight 🔦 which I snuck in bed with me. Thanks for informing us about the Du Maurier family story.
It certainly is addictive Pat, thanks for sharing that and thanks for your positive feedback.
What an interesting video! Rebecca has always been one of my favorite novels and films. Thank you for posting this!

ok Linda, thanks :)
I read her biography "Boy in the Box". Daphne was an unusual woman!
"Rebecca" is one of those novels where to this day I vividly remember the experience of reading it for the first time as a teen and being completely caught up in the atmosphere of it. I feel bad for Daphne's sister, but for her to title her memoir "It's Only the Sister" is actually pretty funny.
This was so well done (as always). I have always been a huge fan of Rebecca, both the book and the movie with Joan Fontaine. The overwhelming presence of Rebecca who is never actually seen is so well written.
Magnificent, Dear Oddie!!!! I couldn't help but have visions of the old black and white movies while listening to you narrate. My great-grandmother and I would watch old movies while she was recovering from hip-replacement surgery. I miss her dearly, but I am now going to find a print copy of Rebecca and read it! Thank you, my dear friend!

I think this is the best youTube biography video I've ever watched. Beautifully put together, great music, and it made me want to go back and re-read not only Rebecca, that I read decades ago, but all of the other du Maurier books I read when I went through a phase where I could not get enough of her writing. Thank you so much!
That is a great compliment, thank you so much for reaching out with your lovely feedback - much appreciated 🙏😊
It sounds as if she was struggling alot. And the relationship with her Father only added to it.
Oddie, This was fascinating about Daphne du Maurier. I saw and liked the movie "Rebecca" which was Alfred Hitchcock's first American made movie in 1940! Other famous opening lines in Classic books were Moby Dick......"Call me Ismael!" and also in the book "A tale of two cities" opening line."......It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...." Thanks for the upload ❤❤
Thank you so much for reaching out with your kind feedback 😊
Those opening lines are wonderful! 🎉 Another good one is from The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley - The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

You have done a wonderful job of telling Daphne’s story Oddie. She was a very complex individual living in a quite dysfunctional family at an interesting period of time. Her father was rather a piece of work, and clearly did her no favours with regard to stability.
I hadn’t realized the extent to which she identified with Rebecca, but perhaps that is why it is such a deep read. I enjoyed this very much, and, as always, delighted in all the little animations and special details you put in for us. The music was perfectly suited. Sending you and your beloved much love and light.🖤🇨🇦
I appreciate that Tamarra, thank you so much 😊
Absolutely agree with your comments regarding dysfunctional family, that she certainly experienced - albeit in a very nice setting - wealth will provide that decorative frame.
I think a lot of people can identify with Rebecca, in the sense that most of us have an insecurity that there are others are better than us - and I think the large house Manderley is like our memories, a large brooding mausoleum with the turbulent sea (our emotions) swirling around it. Well it’s my take anyway 😄
Very glad you enjoyed the animations and the music my friend, sending Richard and yourself much love and light 🌹🌟
@@ObsoleteOddity So true, those grand old mansions did provide a fine veneer of refined beauty that often masked the things going on inside them. There were also different sensibilities between the rich and the common people…the wealthy were permitted their “eccentricities”
I also see those large homes as you do. They take on generations of emotional energy from all that lived in them, and the events that shaped them. Some objects do the same, which makes antiquing something to do carefully.
Rebecca was so well crafted, as it interwove the various emotional tapestries of its characters, while keeping them distinct and separate. All those secrets rubbing up against each other provide the different emotional perspectives of the players in a building tension.
I think we could enjoy living in one of those grans houses…as long as there was a staff to keep it running smoothly. Our home is a large Arts and Crafts era, and it has its own personality, but I can’t imagine handling anything more than our 16 rooms on my own lol. Enjoy the burgeoning of summer, and keep cool.🖤🇨🇦
@@tamarrajames3590 Oh yes those old homes do collect a lot of energy from the previous inhabitants, in fact some of them decide to stay on; and if you are the new owner mostly they will accept you as long as you are sympathetic to the building, and not planning on any modernisation or architectural changes.
Well if I was ever so fortunate to own or live in such a beautiful mansion, I guess I would live in just a few rooms, as the French do with their chateaux, this saves costs and you still get to enjoy the lovely house and grounds in summer.
I have collected so many antiques, I think they must like me, which is why they wind their way to me - and I’m very lucky that I’ve never really had any bad energy from them. I feel like I am a guardian of the past, I have rescued so many objects from the dustcart.
@@tamarrajames3590 Odette had a dentist appointment today in Zürich, so we drove in and I knew she was going to be awhile, so I walked around the old city, I haven’t been there in so many years - I have taken some footage for when I get time to upload it to CZcams.
It’s very busy, and I’m always happy to get home afterwards - but it’s quite beautiful, all these interconnecting winding long and narrow streets with so many interesting shops.
We are having a mini heatwave here, should be about 32° tomorrow - which is quite hot for this time of year, usually don’t get this heat to late July or August.
Hope you’re enjoying your summer as well my friend!
@@ObsoleteOddity I am much the same with my finds…I have run across some things in shops with negative energy, but I just leave them behind. Those pieces that come home are all of the positive kind, and just in need of a safe haven. Some I keep just until the person they are really for comes along. I love the life and feel of older things, and enjoy sharing my space with them.🖤🇨🇦

Oddie, what a lovely presentation. One feels for what Daphne went through. Happy Father's Day, best wishes always to you and Oddette ❤️
Many thanks!
I don't think Daphne Du Maurier was transgender. I think she subconsciously picked up on her father's wish to be a son.
I agree.
It could be both. We will never know for sure, but her experience (minus the incest) sounds a lot like the trans masc experience.
I think the same thing happened with a friend of mine who ended up transitioning from m to f. As a male, his mother was continually criticizing him- emasculating him really. Now that he is a she, they are "best buddies". Needless to say, her psychological torment continues because her awful upbringing. Do i know it for a fact that she's not really transgender? No. But I've seen enough to make it a good probability.
Deep psychological help was needed before anything.
I do so agree with you. The father - daughter relationship, like the mother - son relationship can sometimes develop into some pretty heavy psychological elements. I think Daphne du Maurier coped very well (the little I have read about her) because she was able to put so much into her writing which was probably very cathartic.
I completely agree. I wonder if it was about her seeking power as well. Better to be a man, who can do those things to weak women, you know?
I really enjoyed this. Du Maurier was such a complex and compelling person. You did a good job of putting all the pieces of her life together. I had no idea how remarkable her life was

Happy that it’s your favourite so far 😊
"Rebecca" has long been one of my most favorite books...a marvelous story, deep and scary...and almost dreamlike in its quality. Interestingly, Hitchcock captured that same, dreamlike quality in his classic, definitive film....the camera work, the use of light and shadow, the quiet, darkly gathering strangeness of it all, its great score by Franz Waxman, its tensions, its deep suspense. It's got it all. There have been other versions made of "Rebecca", as you no doubt know of, Oddie Beau. The superbly gifted Jeremy Brett played Max in a tv series of the story in the UK years ago. Frankly, I did find him a much more intriguing and attractive Maxim than Olivier, though that version did not come close to the superb quality of Hitchcock's film. Interestingly, Du Maurier's husband was the one responsible for the plan and operation of the battle known as "Market Garden" in the Netherlands in WWII.,.and, since he ignored intelligence on actual Nazi strength in the area, sent forces in anyway, and the result was a horrific disaster. Anyway...thank you for this fascinating video, dear Oddie! As always, beautifully and brilliantly done! Love and thanks!
Thanks for your interesting insights and positive feedback. much appreciated 😊
I found an early edition of Rebecca up in our attic when I was a teen in the 1960s. I brought it downstairs, began reading, and was HOOKED from start to finish. I probably read it in a few days in the summertime, same with GWTW which I think I finished in four days of steady reading all day long. I've always loved Olivier as Maxim; but sometimes I thought Joan Fontaine acted a bit like a ninny. I would have given Mrs. Danvers a good hard slap and fired her on the spot. But the character was not strong; she had zero self-esteem and Danvers quickly picked up on this and tried to get her to jump out the window of Rebecca's room. I think DuMaurier had lots of experience with ppl who tried to control her sexually and emotionally, and how different people react to that.

Actually whilst her grand-parents were very comfortable money-wise...acting & writing pre-1970s didn't bring in much money. The asset-rich Rashleighs (pronounced Rash-lee) let her have Menabilly for peanuts in rent as it was quite a wreck but beautiful & in a stunning location next to Polkerris beach. She lived simply & quite frugally...I was her neighbour & knew her all my life until a few years before she died, when I moved farther away. wonderful writer❤
