    He was unhappy. Such a surprise, you’d think being castrated as a young boy would make him super happy. Sarcastic remark.

      Well, buthis appearance was inaccurate, castrati looked more like young boys with feminine features between 12- 17 rather than proper looking men

  • @GeminiAmbience
    @GeminiAmbience Před 14 lety +6

    Broschi's depression is well-known and written about by many authors. And any woman's voice will be an antithesis of a true castrato as the physiology is completely different; moreso due to the changes brought on by the loss of testosterone and the training the boys were put through to develop their chest/rib cages. To get a similar idea, watch talented boys in boy choirs who are very close to puberty. They won't have the same strength/control, but tonality will be as close as possible.

    • @lindabirkett8803
      @lindabirkett8803 Před rokem

      Adult females and pre-pubescent boys have vocal chords that are about the same length. Adult males have longer vocal chords and testosterone also thickens the vocal chords making them less flexible. Castrati didn't use falsetto, like counter tenors. They must have sounded like super-sopranos.

  • @sfkcbf
    @sfkcbf Před 16 lety +24

    The huge problem with the computerized, approximated results is that they started with a countertenor and a female soprano whose sound, technique, and vibrato were a far cry from written accounts of the actual castrato sound. They overlooked using the amazing countertenor Andreas Scholl and a much better soprano such as Maria Cristina Kiehr or Gundula Janowitz. The results would have been much more accurate and much more beautiful.

    • @TonyBittner-Collins
      @TonyBittner-Collins Před 4 lety +2

      Definitely, Andreas Scholl's angelic voice and Maria Cristina Kiehr's sweet one would've made a perfect match. 👍

    • @johnstdominic9887
      @johnstdominic9887 Před 4 lety

      Maria Cristina Kiehr is a good suggestion; although she is a soprano, I find her voice quite masculine and it reminds me of Moreschi. I love Andreas Scholl, but I would not use his voice or any countertenor's for a castrato reconstruction.
      I would combine a top-quality continental treble's voice with that of a high tenor. Both of these are male modal voices, as was the castrato. Think Valdemar Villadsen and Aksel Rykkvin, or Elias Maedler and Juan-Diego Florez.

    • @ultron374
      @ultron374 Před rokem

      I would combine Kuehr's voice with Michael Maniaci voice or Radu Marian.

  • @sfkcbf
    @sfkcbf Před 15 lety +8

    An informative vlideo, e.g., revealing that the great Farinelli was lonely and desired love in his last years. I imagine that he would be suprised that the beginning used the voice of Genaux: her voice is the antithesis of a castrato voice, sliding and warbling. We may not know precisely the castrato sound, but there is much good evidence - written records from experts, Baroque conservatory training methods, medical/voice research, male sopranos, and the better countertenors and sopranists.

    They say they don't know what the castrato sounded like, but we do have Alessandro Moreschi's recordings, however old and of tinny quality. No, he was not Farinelli, and I don't presume to say he even compared, that, we don't know. But, there is a style to Moreschi's singing that no modern attempt can replicate. Theirs was a different school of training altogether. I can't help feeling cheated when I hear women singing their parts, regardless of good they may be. They cannot compare.

      @Ekvitarius Před 6 lety +7

      Moreschi’s voice isn’t that good. Radu Marian (who isn’t a castrato but may as well be one because due to hormonal issues his voice never changed from childhood) sounds much better.

    Watching the film... Half way through - that countertenor in the church has a very nice but dark sound. this is nothing at all like recordings of the sistine chapel choir from 1902 and 1904 - including at least two castrati on the quartet recording.

      I suspect the Michael Jackson was born with "ambiguous genitalia." If he had testicles at all, perhaps they had never descended. Having recently found this video after learning that muslims castrated the boys who looked over their harems of women, I also learned that they also had permanently higher voices, and not just when singing. There are probably NUMEROUS popular singers of our time who were actually born with ambiguous genitalia.
