  • Today we will be doing an oil change on a 2005 Honda 919. This motorcycle has one of the easiest oil changes to perform. If you have ever changed a cars oil than this is a walk in the park. Even if you've never changed any vehicles oil before the canister style filter on the Honda 919 is the perfect platform to learn. No fairings to get in the way, no complicated internal filter, no horribly inconvenient placement of any parts. The oil drain plug and oil filter are out in the open. Heck if you were strong enough to loosen the drain bolt by hand this could be a zero tool oil change !
    What you will need:
    - 10w40 motorcycle oil roughly 4 quarts
    - K&N oil filter KN-204-1
    - 17mm Socket for oil drain bolt
-M12x12mm aluminum washer (for oil drain plug)
    - ratchet
    - oil funnel
    - oil drain pan
    Optional supplies:
    - 12mm socket for horn removal
    - any oil filter wrench (to remove old filter ONLY)
    - short extension ratchet arm
    - Torque wrench
    Torque specs:
    - 18 foot pound = Oil drain bolt
    - 20 foot pound = Oil Filter
** for this job wrenching to spec is not critical. The good ol rule of thumb "tighten until it seats and then 1/4" turn more" is good enough. You can do a lot of damage with over torquing on the oil pan. a cracked oil pan is not a good time. If you want to use a torque wrench be sure to use a quality wrench where the specs for this job fall in the mid range of the wrench.

Just discovered your channel while looking for 919 vids. I ride an 07 myself. After watching some of your past videos I definitely subscribed, I'm just surprised you don't have more subs! Great tips on both the makeshift "funnel" to keep your headers clean when changing the filter and rechecking the oil level after letting the bike run for a minute. That can be an easy thing to forget to do. I look forward to more content!
    Ride safe!

As the drain plug is on the l/h side, the oil should be dropped with the bike on its sidestand. This enables the 919 motor to drain 100% oil. Horn doesn't really need moving for filter access. Consider a filter strap for easier removal maybe? It won't damage the filter either.
Before initial startup, turn the motor over for a few seconds with the killswitch on, this will ensure that oil is circulated back to the top of the head before it's fires up properly. Can help to avoid the risk of a dry start.

I've honestly heard mixed things on how the oil should be drained. It makes sense for it to drain on the side stand but I just do what my mechanic usually does (he also has an owners manual that says on the side stand BUT a tech service manual that says leveled on a center stand or lift lol). The horn doesn't need to be removed normally. My horn is just bent weird from a drop. Had the filter been hand tight I wouldn't have needed to move it at all but the extra room was nice. i just figured why not show how to remove the horn in case someone needed to know. As for the wrench it honestly doesn't matter how you remove it. The wrench I used is what I had and it was really simple. the important thing is that wrenches are not used on new filters. Thank you for the Tip on the oil circulation !

Just an observation. If you look at the position of the oil drainbolt, you can get more oil out if you place the bike on it's sidestand to drain it. That's the way the sump is designed. Yes, use the paddock stand (or center stand) to fill it. (Motul 7100 is a great synthetic oil)
Also, I've never seen a modern supersport bike where there isn't one of these external cannister filters. (Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Ducati, Triumph....) - certainly the bikes that are on the TT course.

The nut on the K & N filter is the same 17mm as the drain bolt.

I have a 2007 honda 919. I have been looking for 2 years for a center stand. Any ideas where I may find one?

      sw-motech CB900F
Also, the OEM 08M50MCZ800, whilst being discontinued and unavailable, requires the exhaust downpipes be removed/moved about from my experience - an awkward installation.
