Mother Gothel's Tragic Story in Tangled (Disney)

  • What if... Mother Gothel DID know best? We don't know very much about her after-all, and she had lived for CENTURIES! Think of all the things she's seen and lived through. It's unfortunate that Disney's Tangled only picks up at the end of hers, so follow me as I delve (too) deeply into "who was Mother Gothel?"

For this animated brainstorm / fun Tangled theory, I'm looking again at the Brothers Grimms' fairy tale "Rapunzel" and seeing how it tracks with Disney's "Tangled." These tales are so different, it's quite a fun adventure, as always! But, in both Grimm and Disney, I've always felt like Mother Gothel got quite the raw deal, even though she was just minding her own dang business, doing all the cool things witches do!
A single drop of sunshine, preserved for centuries under the care and protection of Mother Gothel. But, honestly, how long do you think such a beautiful gift would have lasted in the Kingdom of Corona if it hadn’t been for Mother Gothel's guardianship of it? I doubt the royal family tried to use a single leaf at first to try to brew the potion - you know, NOT kill the whole flower off the bat. Luckily, that power survives and thrives in a new form: the child, and I’d like to think it could have continued passing on down the generations had Flynn Rider not cut Rapunzel’s hair. Think of all the healing that could have been passed along throughout the kingdom! So many healers as time went on! If ONLY Mother Gothel (and the whole Kingdom?!) had acted differently, this Tangled story of Rapunzel could have been quite a beautiful story of sharing! Also, is Mother Gothel a Goddess? Is she a Witch?

Was kinda dumb they used the entire flower, like why not try a petal then you can still have the healing for the future if you need it

Yeah I’d agree that Dame Gothel is actually tamer than Disney Gothel.

this wouldn't be the first time that disney has painted the wrong person as the bad guy; they did it with sharpay evans, so why wouldn't they do it again?

But question, in the Tangled series Mother Gothel had a daughter which she abandoned at a young age when she tried to steal/kidnap lil Rapunzel, so Why or how would she not be the bad guy when she abandoned Cassandra? (Mother gothel's daughters name also I apologize for having bad grammar i dont speak english very often...)

Wait rapunzel still has her power within herself doesn't she? She can still heal really well. So she and Flynn will probably have more healer kids

It would have been extra dark if Mother Gothel killed baby Rapunzel and buried her body, soon sprouting from her grave is... a new shining flower bud 🌼 if the kingdom was able to transfer the power into soup, there’s no reason it wouldn’t find another way to manifest itself back if it found a transferable method

Movie Gothel was a doofus because she had centuries to get that flower out of their, put it in a pot and take it home where it's safe or build her house near it or even just put a sign up that says "Property of Mamma G trespassers with be stabbed." Instead she left it out in the open where it was inevitable that someone would find it. Also I recommend the Tangled series. It's oodles of fun and we get to see a bit more of Gothel not going to spoil anything.

I almost 100% agree with Abit on Gothel being put into the situation and other people being selfish with the flower's magic. You think about all these other villains who do horrible things because they want power, revenge, or simply want to watch other people suffer. Gothel did everything she did out of desperation and because she felt like she had no one else to turn to. Still evil, but not nearly as evil as every other villain. Abit does fail to take into consideration that the lack of connection between the sundrop and moonstone would have destroyed the kingdom instead of continually healing it though, which is another reason Gothel was a good guardian of it.

If anyone wants to know a bit more about mother gothels past you can read the book "Mother Knows Best" by Serena Valentino. It explaned a lot of her choices and also explained how mother gothel knew the song to make the flower work. Anyways its a great read and i highly reccomend it.

i think the fact that she went after rapunzel and kidnap her means Gothel was just seeking the inmortal power and she was keeping the flower to herself more that protecting it. i love every theory and maybe she had her reasons but i don´t think she had good intentions at all

I honestly enjoy the family-friendy outbursts bitfrank gives. "Entitled sons-a-guns" was my favorite. Its actually quite refreshing to have a CZcams video (for older audiences) where you don't have to hear swearing for the sake of entertainment.
