In democratic systems, political power is not automatic. It has to be won, and once won, it has to be preferably kept too as long as possible. To win it and to keep it, it attracts people with certain qualities, that can be used for the better or the worst or for something in between. But the two extremes here are probably more pronounced that between most people. It can lead to a large array of drastic cut throat tactics not uncommon in (wild) capitalism. Everyone reaching the political top has had to use his or her elbows, step on other people's careers etc. Generally this doesn't get outside. In Nixon's case it did. Generally, it doesn't go beyond rumours, innuendo, hearsay, strong suspicions. Mostly, politicians get away with it.

I agree with the bulk of what these exceptional journalists said in this discussion. For those that do not think their reporting had a significant impact on how the country and the world perceives the Watergate Scandal, just imagine if they had not had the nerve and the will to put their honor and livelihood on the line, when no one believed them. I do disagree with Carl Bernstein's view of listening to the Watergate tapes being more entertaining and appealing than listening to hiphop music. That's just my own personal view, though.
