  • In this video I tackle the problem of the occasional failure of either the wipers or washer motor on a full size Chevy or GMC truck. The fault deals with a dry solder connection on the wiper board...its an easy fix and I show you how.

Well I'm sure I'm not the best solderer in the world but, I tried this because my washers stopped working and now it does all kinds of crazy shit. I'm 65 and needed something to spice up my life so thanks a lot. My ass is spiced up now. lol

I purchased a $3.99 soldering iron and a $3.49 lead-free rosin core solder to re-solder the 5 points displayed in this video. My dad has a 1997 Chevy Z71 Silverado 1500 and the DIY fix worked like a charm! Not only did it correct the problem with erratic intermittent wiping, but the problem with no wiper fluid spraying. Many thanks for the tutorial which saved me at least the cost of a new wiper pulse control board ($20-something from auto parts store).

I had the same problem with the fluid not working. And my wipers wouldnt stop when i turned them off! And they wouldnt turn on at times either! Thank you sir for the post!

I've been dealing with this for several years on my '98 Silverado. I don't drive it much, but when I do - it's usually when I need the wipers. With too many vehicles to maintain / repair, I've been wingin it on the truck and getting wipers / washers to work by wiggling connection or banging on the motor / board box which eventually gets it working. Your video nails my problem, and I'll have it fixed shortly! Thanks! Great video!

Was having problems on a '98 GMC K-1500 with the wipers sometimes working and other times not working at all. Jiggling the wiring connector would temporarily fix the problem but not for long. Watched this video and decided to inspect the circuit board as he suggests. Under a lighted magnifier I could see that every soldered connector contact on the circuit board was cracked loose or broken. Re-soldered them and the problem was solved, wipers now work as they should. Many thanks Turbo231, you helped save an old retired guy some bucks.

OK ... This is a GREAT VIDEO and the truck is exactly like mine only I'm a 97. I tried this and then reinstalled the board and nothing worked, wipers, sprayers .... so I re-soldered adding extra solder and put everything back. All worked except the passenger side sprayer ... I then put a straight pin in the hole and felt nothing ... but when I tried everything ... the wipers were working better and all sprayers worked fine after a couple tries ... Thanks you saved me money that took 30 minutes to fix at home ....

Awesome video, lots of info yet concise. I love that I know what, why, and how to fix my problem in under 4 minutes without the need to fast forward because I don't want to hear about the weather where you are at, or how much money you saved from the local parts store, your noisy neighbor, why the video is low res, or ... well you get the idea. This is why I don't make videos.
Managed to do this in about 5 minutes, likely would have been faster if my soldering iron would have heated up quicker, think it was because of the extension cord used. To speed the job up I soldered the board without even disconnecting it, My experience has been that the plastics on my electrical connectors are brittle and prone to breaking so I decided it would be faster and less aggravating that way.

Sounds like a gear or loose bolt/nut combo. It could be the motor, but I'd remove the cowl (black trim under the windshield) and check out the mechanism there...sounds like something stripped out. If that seems to be ok, then I'd swap the motor. This video deals with wipers that don't do anything (no noise or anything) because of a fault in the circuit board.
