1994 Lumina APV Minivan Junkyard Tour! What a clean example!
Went to Bucks Auto Parts in Sherwood Park, just outside of Edmonton AB on June 29th to pull some parts on this 1994 Lumina Minivan. Also did a bit of training on the ins and outs of the climate control system and dig some digging around the electronics. I didn't need too many parts off it, but its a nice example of a nice van. And like an unattended funeral, I'm likely the only person who will visit this van before it hits the crusher...its good seats and all.

Ever wonder what is under the dash of your Dustbuster Van? Lets take a quick tour of this 1994 Chevy Lumina Minivan at Bucks Auto Parts in Edmonton, AB and see what makes it, and all of our vans, tick under the dash. Should work for any Chevy Lumina APV, Pontiac Trans Sport, and Oldsmobile Silhouette, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996.

I had seen this tractor in a market place ad about 2 months ago and it was for a GE Elec-trak tractor, so I looked them up and they were pretty neat. Next a mint condition one showed up on market place for $1000, which is crazy for any tractor....and then these showed up...bunch of tractors, make an offer...so I inquired and they ended up coming home with me. Lets tour these GE Elec-trak tractors!

One van is cool, no doubt....two vans, super cool....but three vans? Well my friend, here we go. Van #2, the 1992 Pontiac Trans Sport had a parts van hiding, the owner got me in contact with them and I ended up buying this van. Its in great shape, the engine might be toast, but its something we can work with for sure!

I received this tiller free from a friend, it ran so so, I was able to get it to run better, but it slowly deterioatored to not running well at all. I knew it was 100% carburetor related, so here is a quick video on how to replace it! Yes, you could tear it down and clean it, but for the price, a swap is much easier and generally gets better results, especially with worn rubber gaskets.

I had a 1988 Cutlass Supreme INTL Silver and Gray ground effects. Sadly a 2.8L though but she was stylish for the time. Fully digital dash, 4 bucket seats, 2dr. W Body, FWD. Looks cool, underpowered as heck though. Good little find you had here. Loved watching it. If you find a Calais INTL or a Supreme INTL, I'd love to see a video on them too.
¡Excelente!
Great video! You saved me a bit of time hunting down that wire.
I'm a second generation owner of the family E20 and have manuals if you neede scans.
Thank you very much for the offer! I have found quite a few online so I’m hopefully set for now.
Thanks for this video this was very helpful do you all know what can be symptoms that it's time to change your cabin filters I have noticed I get sick and congested every time I turn on my AC I just figured it out two days ago this could be the problem
It’s pretty easy to check as it could have a mouse nest on it. Worse comes to worse you could run without it “old car” style.
Hi, I replacing mine as well. 2002 pontiac grand prix GT . What size was the inlet on the Extension pipe. ? And how many inches long would I need ? Thank you
Yikes, if I didn’t mention it in the video I can’t quite remember.
Can you traduction in castellano/Español ? Gracias
You will have to find a CZcams tool for that.
The idea of pretrippin all dem tires... 😳 Goodness! What's your average On Duty for that? 😅
No idea but yes, it’s quite a procedure.
Use dielectric grease on the electrical contacts after cleaning. Heck, contact cleaner usually leaves a thin film of it but there’s no reason you can’t add more. It promotes conductivity and prevents oxidation. Often simply adding it fixes connections issues like magic.
As long as there no physical wear, I agree.
This was still a million times easier than doing my Montana without the special “GM Thermostat Wrench” for the 3400 SFI.
I haven’t come across that yet, but good to know.
Are we just going to ignore the next gen version sitting right next to it (Chevy Venture)? ;)
This was before I was even into U-vans. And yes. I’m fairly partial to the 1st gens now that I have 3.
Though I’m currently stranded with my 3.4L Trans Sport Montana, I’m here because of a Georgia couple stranded in their 3.8L Lumina APV. It was 4 days ago and they’re still there, clearly living in it with their dog. I’m not really a car guy, totally broke, in a similar situation myself, and I’m already in way over my head… but I’d like to help. I’m still recovering from my own 5 mile walk to work the day before but these people have it worse. I saw them on my lunch break and then again several 100°F hours later. I walked miles to work a day earlier, but I now had my friend’s car so I stopped to see if I could help. It’s now been several days and they have pushed the van to an O’Reilly’s Auto store. When I saw them they were trying to get a new belt on but they said the crank pulley was wobbling even before it broke. After struggling with inadequate tools, we ran out of daylight. I was thirsty but I left them with my Taco Bell drink (they needed it) and phone number in case there was anything I could help with. My situation is barely any better since my own van is broken down and I’ve been displaced by a tornado, but I had my friend’s car for the night. They texted me asking for water and a flashlight while I was already on the way back with tools and lights. I felt guilty for wasting what little daylight they had earlier. I was able to get the belt on but the harmonic balancer/crank pulley was definitely misaligned and some hard vacuum lines were broken from the old belt breaking. The battery was dead from running an inverter but I came back with a jump starter and a case of water. Of course, it still wouldn’t start and the belt was walking right off when cranking. It’s been days and suddenly they are asking for a replacement hose for the fuel regulator. I don’t even know where to start. It’s probably one of the two vacuum hoses I saw which were broken by the old belt coming loose and I expect it will happen again since the crank is the real problem. Even so, the guy seems to think he will retime it on the side of the road without removing the engine… and I already know he’s not any more mechanically inclined than I am (not at all). Wishful thinking? Any idea what happened and what it might really need based on my description? Remember: Belt broke, crank pulley/balancer are misaligned, wouldn’t start even with a charged battery.
The tornado that displaced me also crushed my car and I couldn’t get another due to being co-signed on a friend’s loan. I had to go a year with no vehicle until another friend gave me the Montana… which was a blessing even though the constant breakdowns have been a nightmare… but this isn’t about me. I’m just explaining why I related to their situation with a particularly relevant experience. Unfortunately, they did not have a friend as generous as mine and they had just paid for this van days earlier. I’m barely one step removed from living in my van. My mother’s landlord sold the neighborhood to developers forcing her to leave just as I was trying to move in. She had to abandon her trailer and I had to abandon my accessory building, and since I had no place for me, I had no place for her. Thankfully, my old landlord finished rebuilding but I have to stay in my rented workshop. She’s on a waiting list with the Housing Authority for a seniors. So, yeah, as bad as it’s been for me, I think these people somehow have it much worse. Really put things into perspective and makes me appreciate what I have. I wish I could do more for them and I’m here to get direction on that.
You’ll need to replace that vibration dampener…no belt is a no go. It can be done in the van, but it takes specialty pullers.
@@Turbo231 Thanks. Believe it or not, I saw they were still stranded in the parking lot at O’Reilly’s last night. Last message I got implied they could borrow the puller from O’Reilly’s if I could provide the part and a breaker bar. Of course, I’m still elbow-deep in my own van with no money for the parts to get it fixed. Yeah, they were asking for a new crank pulley with harmonic balancer. If I can get to a junk yard for my own van I’ll see if I can find one but I don’t have the puller either and I’m totally broke. I think they’re going to have to find that one on their own. :(
Can you are now the sunshine
Yeah, but still have the mower.
I got the 93 APV and needed to know that dash foam stuff, so thanks for this video.
You are welcome. Love these vans and how they are put together.
This was the first generator that i bought and i had no clue on how to set it up or start it thank you sir much it was a very helpful video
Glad it was helpful, ours is still running great.
I’m rebuilding one now and can’t find any of the parts. I’m watching this video and can’t believe everything I need for mine is right on this one in a junk yard
Yeah, junkyard cars are like that. Often they are stripped, or more often, still fairly complete until squishing time.
Do you know if this car is still available? If so would you be willing to pull some parts for me?
It’s long gone, while this yard will keep a car for 3+ months, this video is far older than that.
Did you ever find the problem?
The starter is dead. Since I have no parts units and wasn’t planning on keeping the car whole, I will leave it at that.
I’ve done so much work on those Quad4s. 89, 90 and 91 Grand Ams. I wish they weren’t all almost gone.
Yeah, it’s pretty strange how rare they’ve gotten.
@@Turbo231 they need maintenance, and repair often. While they are cheap to fix diy, a lot of people just can’t, and they end up in the salvage yard. I bought my 91 in 99 for $500 with a blown head gasket. I think the gasket kit was $135, and I might have paid $170 for head work. It was an 8 year old car and was effectively worthless.
I have a 95 that has no acceleration/power, stalls at times. Just got it so I'm thinking it needs filter replacement
Maybe, but sounds more sensor related.
Memories of torque steer 😂
For such a little engine, yes. Lol
@@Turbo231 The 2.8l was even worse 😂
Oh the memories 🤔😋
Indeed. They are way bigger than I remember.
Great video! I have a 1994 I’m needing to replace these on. 👍🏽
Awesome, that’s why I made the video.
Mine just snapped on one side, the other side is cracked just like this.
Not a great design, I wouldn’t pause a second to also use an epoxy to repair it.
That was a very interesting and approachable overview on how a car's hvac system works. Thanks for sharing! I feel like I learned a lot.
Awesome. I have a parts van but it has a minor chance of running so I don’t want to wreck it yet.
Interesting options , Could be a custom order 🤔
It was thrown together by the factory as it does have the FLT code, which is for fleet option. And by that, it was a van sent to dealers because nobody ordered them most likely. Lol. Order 40 pickups, get a few vans to sell nobody wants.
@@Turbo231 Ah yes , Fleet 😂
Also, I'm not all that experienced with these but I believe you're pushing it a bit fast.
There is no speed limit to mowers as the ratio of wheel spin to reel spin is the same. What you get is momentum.
@@Turbo231 I've noticed at too high a speed the mower can skip a bit over rough and uneven patches of the lawn, so in my own use there's a sweet spot!
Think you need the just use grinding compound to even out the blade and sharpen it
Mostly the evening out part...and to cut a new edge, but a good alignment will get most people where they need to be, especially on blade contact mowers.
Very fun opening up old junkyard vans for parts. Almost nothing is ever missing when I find them. The little plastic wing nuts that hold on the headlights are worth having spares as they break. The luggage rack thumb screws are identical to the ones that hold on period GM headlights, typically on Buicks. Too bad she ended up there as she looked like a super winter beater for someone. That rear heat package and cruise control make good sense for Alberta. Are crank windows more reliable in extreme cold climates?
Those windows might be, but I haven't had any issues with my electric ones over the years. I know I did a video on a junkyard and came back a month later and a tool I forgotten was still there...so no one had even entered the van. Technically, all the fasteners would be nice to have. I have a parts van, but I think I can get it back on the road, so its hard to strip of everything as I'll likely have to put it back again. :o
Your parts van is pretty good underneath, so she might deserve another chance to serve. The crossover parts you already have in stock are handy. Does your Pontiac van have the same manual mirrors verses the power ones? Is it worth it to have both sets? I’ve never seen manual mirrors here in Central Texas boneyards. I think my dad cut and pasted all of the ones sold here with L27 and rear air, but the Austin van was different.
@@ryanfoster9863 Actually, it doesn’t. The Pontiac has that manual remote driver’s mirror but also has the passenger manual remote mirror. This van had no passenger control, aka you have to roll the window down. I wonder if that’s a slow decline of option quality as the van series got older as my Pontiac is pretty base.
thanks for this vid. cheers
You are welcome! Its not an overly watched series of videos, but for the few, its nice.
Thanks I looked for about an hour to find a video had an idea but needed help
I'm glad it may have helped. This motor now serves Winter Service on my snow blower...but it doesn't like the cold so it takes about 2 minutes of a hair dryer on the carb to make it happy...after that, 3 pulls and we're off to the races.
@@Turbo231 thanks man I just got my power washer turned on and stay on
I like Wheel Horse a lot more than the other lawn and Garden Tractor I have a Wheel Horse RJ58 and a John Deere E 120 Home Depot 🐴🐴🐴
Everyone has their favorites. The GE Elec-trak units I have are promising, but looking forward to getting a 60s/70s Cub Cadet with a 3 speed.
Nobody fucking do this!!! Jesus Christ! You should be embarrassed that you even posted this garbage! Fucking moron
Also a fun fact: M for Lansing is the north assembly line. C is south assembly. I have an 85 Olds Calais with C. N body chassis were made at one plant and moved to the assembly plant to be built as either the olds, pontiac, or buick.
That’s pretty cool.
Did you get the radio ?
No.
Thanks you!
You are welcome, hoped it helped.
@@Turbo231 sure did
Thanks for the show-n-tell! Taking these apart in the junkyard is a great way to learn. Good job on the chime module! Everyone needs 5-6 of those for their now and future pickup trucks. I’ve been collecting them and trying to figure out how to get the different Cadillac units to work with other GM cars of the period.
OH yeah, that chime module actually landed right in my wife's Fiero who's chime module sucks...now I need to find more!
I’ve had trouble finding the chime modules in many cars from that era as they were often WAY up under the dash above the radio. Did you look in that Buick A-body? I’ve never found one in those, but in theory they should have nice ones. Period full-size Chevys and Roadmasters also have them.
Its always interesting to see the innards of a vehicle . and you can break something and learn before you try it out on you own car 😂
Oh, completely. Its nice to look for assembly traps so when on your own stuff you can try to not break things.
@@Turbo231 👍
Cool! Hope you scored the parts you needed. Looking forward to seeing that Riviera.
Yup, I did it, it was a sweetheart...I should be releasing Junkyard crawls weekly again starting this week.
June 29th.. Thanks for the tour
For which vehicle are you looking for a radio ?
It was such a nice day and Bucks always has way too nice of cars to be there.
I'm always looking to upgrade anything. The 1997-2002 Pontiac Grand Prix's have an excellent radio with EQ, but they don't fit in the vans (wiring and physically). I did find an older unit from a Cadillac, I'm likely to try to put it in my 1993 and see how it goes...there will of course be a video. I currently have a similar Buick radio that looks great that may work too.
What better way to spend a Saturday 🥰
I started at 8:30 AM and had to drag myself out of there at 2 PM so I could get home in time...I could soooo waste a whole day there easily.
@@Turbo231 😂

Mass Air Flow Sensor. But seriously, unplug it and see how that goes…they tend to fail without setting a code and are super hit or miss and are super easy to check.
@Turbo231 and sometimes it will show a check engine light mid misfire and it will blink and then go way in like 10 seconds or so
@@chxpionships_5163 The computer will be storing that code for you, will be handy to go in and get it.
This is one reason I got the version with a brushless motor.
Yeah, it’s not a hard fix, but you are right, it can be avoided.
