Making milk tart - This has got to be South African's favourite dessert!

- Hi everyone - Hope you are all keeping well after the recent heavy rains we have had!
Milk tart or Melk tert has surely got to be South African's favourite dessert. With so many public holidays coming up we thought it was the perfect time to try out a milk tart recipe using Woolies milk tart recipe as the basis. It turned out well the first time we tried so we decided to film it for the channel!
Ingredients
Pastry base:
125g butter (salted)
1/2 cup castor sugar
1 large egg
2 cups cake flour
1 tsp baking powder
a pinch of salt
Milk tart filling
2 1/2 Cup full cream milk
a large cinnamon stick
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 large egg
1 heaped tbs butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 tbs flour
2 tbs maizena (corn flour)
1 tsp cinnamon powder
Serve with a hot cup of coffee or tea for the perfect after dinner or braai dessert!

Let me ask Pranesh to do some research and get back to you. For the filling it may be possible to use custard powder and make a custard filling- so it becomes a custard tart. However I’m not sure for the pastry base.

Hello I normally make mine eggless so I hope you don’t mind me sharing here. Just add a few drops of ice water to bind the dough.
Or you can make a eggless biscuit dough. Pre bake your shell then add the milk tart filling and refrigerate it for a few hours.

@@GaithreeDeviLuckan , a filling of corn flour (Maziena) and plain flour equal tablespoons spoons of both. With the usual sugar and vanilla essence.

Hi how old is this aunty she has so much patience and energy to bake and cook. Lovely recipes I watch every time.
I have never made a milk tart , and a custard tart , which I am assuming is the English equivalent sounds dreary. So I am going to give it a go. By cake flour do you mean plain or self- raising flour? Thank you and sorry for the silly question - but for me it is unclear. I make my cakes with self easing flour, but some cakes use plain flour and you add your own rising agents!!!!
We used plain flour and added in the baking powder. It’s always great to clarify and we should have been more clear.

@@joycevanloggenberg1284 the filling sets very quick. Did the filling perhaps cool too much?
Could also be that it was left too long to thicken on the stove perhaps. You need to get it off the stove as soon as it starts to thicken up. May take some practice to get it it right…
