    An interesting variation would be a flyweight governor hooked to something like a band brake. That way the dampening effect would be greatest at the start, and gradually ease as spring tension decreased. A slower start, but more consistent speed.

    I wonder if using wind resistance governor like on many clocks would ensure a more constant speed for longer? You could easily print the mechanism and try it out. That said, the rotary damper is a simple and elegant solution.

    • @danielbruin
      @danielbruin  Před 3 lety

      I actually tried that because I've done that before in this work: czcams.com/video/nX-RfSnBbSo/video.html

    • @samuelfellows6923
      @samuelfellows6923 Před 3 lety

      That small gear has thick, sticky grease on it’s bearing that dampens the speed of the rotation of the gear, a example of this is the door on a compact cassette recorder - these have a spring that opens the door when you press eject/stop and the latch releases it, this spring is quite powerful/highly tensioned and the door would “bang” open if the rotary damper wasn’t designed into it - a common indicator that the cassette recorder, vintage cassette/radio boombox was a poorly made, cheap crap, poor quality that would not last ☹️. Higher end/quality ones had the rotary damper designed/incorporated into the cassette recorder door hinge - where gear teeth moulded into a curved part of the hinge meshed with the rotary damper gear = giving it a “soft” eject. Later the door of front loading/lid of top loading compact disk players had it to show its manufacturing quality
