    I've been a Star Wars fan for over 40 years, and this was easily the most powerful and emotional moment in the franchise. Anakin coming forward for just a moment to release his former master of his guilt by telling him it wasn't his fault, to have Vader re-emerge and gloat over killing Anakin was just brilliant. It's crazy that it has taken over 4 decades to get to the point of how Obi-Wan may have been the single most important character in the SW universe. And that scene alone was better than the entire sequel trilogy combined.

      Agree completely, people saying it's a "fuck you old man" miss the point of why Vader is the way he is. Vader is powered by hate, yes, but hate for himself. Anakin was weak and lost everything by being a child, Vader is what remains. I like to think part of the reason Obi Wan and Ahsoka could never bring Anakin back is because he views them as his own personal failures. He could never be redeemed to them truly because everything he did hurt them. Luke brought Vader back because he was quite literally his biggest failure (the murder of his wife and unborn children) telling him that he was innocent for this one act and that he could be redeemed.

    In psychology, when we do something we regret but we can't go back and change our actions/right our wrongs, that puts us into an extremely uncomfortable state of cognitive dissonance. To compensate/eliminate this, we convince ourselves instead that we don't regret our actions at all, that what we did was justified. The Vader half deals with the cognitive dissonance and guilt stemming from his actions by focusing on his hatred and anger, convincing himself that the Jedi deserved what they got by turning their backs on him and refusing to save Padme, that Obi-Wan deserves to be punished for injuring him on Mustafar. The Anakin half deals with the guilt, depression and self-hatred by retreating deep inside. Once in a while, we do see Anakin emerge, e.g. in this scene where we see both Anakin and Vader speaking. It wasn't Vader crying, it was Anakin.

    This is why Anakin is my favorite character in all of Star Wars. We’ve all felt like we’re not loved, respected or trusted, and when you do find that one person that actually does care and does try to understand what you’re going through, you’re willing to do almost anything to help them. As the man said, Anakin desperately needed love, affection and a father figure, and I can relate so much to him because I personally went a long time without any of those things in my life.

    • @michaelrunk5930
      @michaelrunk5930 Před 7 měsíci +13

      That is only part of why Anakin fell to darkside. The Jedi treated Anakin like any other Jedi. They saw it as important that he be treated no different. They were harder on him because he was supposed to be the choosen one. So they expected more out of him. His actions were reckless and he was prone to acting on his emotions which the Jedi felt to be a weakness and a path to the darkside.
      It never occurred to Jedi council to treat him different to give him some bend. In so doing so learn that maybe the old way of doing things wasnt necessarily the right way. They couldn't see that because they were stuck in their ways.
      The Jedi were doing what they Jedi had been doing for a 1,000 years. Love in mind of the Jedi leads to attachment and that is path to the darkside.
      While it can lead some one down a dark path. It can also be a force for good. It can inspire some one to do good things. It can offer comfort and rest in dark times.
      The mistake that pushed Anakin to dark side was he was in love and he couldn't stand by and let women he love die. Yet he had no one to turn to for help except Sidious.
      I've always argued that Anakin turned to the dark side out of desperation. But I also believe that he believe he was so powerful he could go to darkside learn what he need and retain the good person he was.
      Only problem was the more evil acts he committed the more he had to justify it in his mind. By time he faced Obi-Wan he bent and twisted his own mind trying to justify his own actions. Then when Padma died he shatter the part of him that was Anakin. To point were the good person he was retreated and all that was left was Anger and hate and Pain which took the form of Vader.
      George Lucas was right when he said Vader comes off as this terrifying being but in reality he a pathetic man behind a mask. He just broken on so many levels.
      I dont see Vader the same way I used to because of the prequels and Obi-Wan series and even the comics. I feel nothing but pitty for him. I feel sorry for him.

He's changed, redeemed himself, but yeah it sucks, and I totally get what your saying and for me at least it makes this so much more powerful and even really enhanced the scene in return of the Jedi with luke.bvader is watch the emperor torture Luke with force lightning, it shows Vader's mask with a close up and you can hear Luke in the background pleading for help. Even though Vaders face is under the mask you can literally see the moment he makes his shift to the light side. So much emotion in that one little scene and you can't even see his face. It's a severely underrated gem in cinema history. And it's made all the more powerful by what transpurdd in this fight. Disney ruined the new movies imo. But this brought my faith back into it.

With that said I think Mace along with Yoda they fear that Anakin was too vulnerable to fall into the dark side which is the reason they didn't really gave him the open door treatment. At the end Anakin didn't kill younglings for pleasure but to save the love of his life not knowing that his actual choices is what actually killed her. What doesn't make a lot of sense is after knowing that Padme was dead why did he continued to be a sith..??? and the answer is like they said on this video, it had to do with Palpatine being the only person that he actually trusted and waws like a father figure while Obiwan was just trying to shove the Jedi law on his throat even thou he was already breaking the Jedi code by falling in love and marrying Padme.

    In that moment. When Obi wan stared into the yellow tired eyes of his former apprentice for the first time since their battle, he didn't see a see sith lord, or a murderer or a failed apprentice who wronged him. He just saw Anakin, little Ani, the boy who looked up at him during Qui gons funeral and asked what would become of him. The promise he made to him that he would be a Jedi. The endless critisims he gave him and his ultimate failure as his master to protect him. All he could say to him was
    "I'm sorry..."
    That single tear vader shed and even his haughty attempt at "comforting" Obi wan by saying he is not to blame for Anakins death. Really shows just how far gone he was but traces of humanity still lingered within him.
    Those 2 words were all Anakin ever needed to hear. It could have saved him so much pain.

      It really highlights what happens to high risk children who had a bad start in the real world now society ignores or abuses them them gas lights them. Anakin was the best of then potential wise and that potential came with it a higher risk. They needed to give him more because he needed more, not less.

    Vader knows he did this to himself. He projects his hate outward but really all that hate is directed at himself and the emperor.
    Also, on the love and respect thing it's so true. That's why Qui-Gon would have been better for him, Qui-Gon would listen to how he feels and help him work through it.

However, Obi-Wan was more of a factual and literal follower of the jedi beliefs. He was more authoritarian with it and never focused on helping Anakin sort his feelings. Obi Wan was very convicted and extremely devout and he expected Anakin to be exactly the same be ause he blindly believed Anakin was the chosen one there was no way Anakin could ever be bad. It was a massive mistake and Obi-Wan had to eventually realize it. We know he realizes it and grows to be a better man and Jedi with the he handles Luke In the future. Amazingly written.

    I just love this scene SO MUCH. When Luke finally reaches out to Anakin in ROTJ with love and compassion, not judgement or hatred, with the exact same love from a son that Anakin so desperately wanted from Qui Gon or Obi Wan and the other Jedi, THEN it’s Anakin Skywalker NOT Darth Vader who throws the evil, ugly, manipulative Sidious to his death down that Death Star chasm like he deserves, and finishes his destiny with the force and brings balance. Darth Vader was a means to an end for the Force (symbolizing when Luke burns Vaders damaged body that only brought pain and discomfort to Anakin) but Anakin lives on forever as we see him appear to his son next to Yoda and Obi Wan at the end of ROTJ.
    In my own cannon, Anakin brought balance to the force and killed the emperor. Not Rey who isn’t even a Skywalker but an offspring of Palpatine? I don’t hate Rey as a character or Poe, the others I don’t care for, but it’s because of the lack of love for the source material and Star Wars in general the writing of the sequels was a tragedy and malpractice by Abrams and Johnson. Just lack of love and respect and only personal or corporate agenda. The new sequels just depress me how badly they were handled.
    But this scene has returned a love once forgotten, just like how Anakin was reminded of his love for Luke, Obi Wan, and Padme. Truly the heart and love of Star Wars is in this scene.

    • @khanktinga
      @khanktinga Před rokem +12

      It was Luke in TLJ that upset me the most about the sequels. Having a hero fail and regress is not what is bad, but that he failed at exactly what made him win in RotJ - having hope that he could find the good in someone that fell to the Dark Side. That Luke was RIGHT about his father and that it was his compassion for his father that turned him back to the Light to kill the Emperor should have left Luke even more certain that he could do the same for his nephew. It is just not even plausible to me that Luke would have had such strong doubts that he could and that killing Ben was the only answer, even for an instant.
      I have to say that I also didn't like Luke agreeing with Ashoka that Grogu needed to follow the old Jedi ways of not having attachments in The Book of Boba Fett. The whole attachments = bad was a major factor in Anakin's downfall, as he the Jedi Code and philosophy made him think that his feelings for Padme were wrong and needed to be hidden, leading him to be unable to share his visions and fears with Yoda or Obi-wan. They might have found a better way to counsel him than Yoda simply telling him to let go of what his afraid to lose. They may have even figured out the problems with that philosophy itself and learned from Qui-gon's force ghost. Notice that the whole attachments = bad thing wasn't even part of Yoda's teaching Luke. He did teach him not to give into anger and aggression, which is good, and he did say that Luke should stay and complete the training rather than try and save Han and Leia (but not because he needed to let go of his attachment to them, but to think of the bigger picture that he wasn't ready to face Vader - that's not quite the same extent of what Yoda told Anakin).
      I think that the real prophecy of the Chosen One and bringing balance to the Force was not that he would destroy the Sith, but show that it wasn't necessary for the Jedi to isolate themselves from others in order to avoid the Dark Side. That a balance could be maintained with each individual between their passions and what is good and just. At least, that is the direction I wish that they had gone with the post Return of the Jedi story.
      (And wtf is with having Mando and Grogu be such a strong focus in a series about BOBA FETT?!?! They should have left Grogu out of Boba Fett enitirely and saved that whole storyline for Mando Season 3)

    This should cement Hayden Christensen as a great Anakin Skywalker regardless of his hatred that he received from the prequels it wasn't him that chose to act that way in the prequels it was a script and George Lucas's direction. I've always loved his Anakin Skywalker. I thought he always brought a pretty good dynamic to the character and just this little scene alone with the broken mask the acting from Hayden was superb. This is also the reason why Vader lost he was conflicted just like he was conflicted against ahsoka every time he goes up against somebody he loves from his past. He never goes all out. This is evident during The final duel in the finale the way Vader is swinging his lightsaber and charging towards Obi-Wan grunting also the fact that he let Obi-Wan beat the crap out of his control panel and didn't do nothing about it come on man Vader would never let that happen if he wasn't conflicted as such. Besides the plot leading up to a new hope that's why Vader didn't win because they have to meet again plus it would break in and if Vader died because he's in the original trilogy. I mean it's clear that Vader was conflicted pretty much the entire fight how he was fighting and everything like that I mean you could say it's due to the suit and his cybernetics and all that stuff yes Vader never retained Anakin's agility but he was far from a clunky ass robot like he was in the original Canon in this new Cannon he's an absolute powerhouse and close to being unparalleled in the force. Now if Obi-Wan would have mentioned Padme during their little conversation there I'm pretty sure Vader would have got a second wind kind of like Obi-Wan did when he thought about the children when he was buried under the rocks and we would have got comic book accurate going on Obi-Wan's ass.

But I'm in the process of becoming a kindergarten teacher and throughout my interactions with many people including internet friends a decade younger than me who I'm a big brother to and looking back at class mates from elementary school I realized that it's so important to praise people. This affirmation is so important. I also realized that having a father figure is really important, especially for modern women these days but also for young men.
    I can also relate to Vader so much. I'm lucky enough to always have had the backing of my family, even when I lied to them and caused them grief and suffering through my selfish and self harming behavior. But sometimes you are so deep into the shit that you feel like there is no way out of it. That it's too late to go back. I was proven wrong every time so far. And if you can learn one thing from a stupid made up fictional space wizard story, it's that it's never too late to turn around and redeem yourself. If Darth Vader did that shit, so can you.

Anakin needed that closure just as Obi Wan needed it. And I truly believe the tear was also for seeing his former master his older brother, the man who he looked up to and admired the most and respected was torturing himself for and not doing well because he blames himself for his downfall. I think Anakin’s saying I love you master and forgive you was exactly this “this is all on me, let go and be the Jedi that I know you can be and will be and save this galaxy” he’s just wording differently cause he wants to convince obi wan that he still hates him when deep down he loves him still. I believe the apology by Kenobi was heartfelt & something that was as much for himself as it was for Anakin.
    Ultimately I also believe the largest slice of blame pie for the turnover to Vader goes to Master Yoda. ... He knew his students through & through and was the one who assigned Kenobi as Anakin's master & never changed it as Anakin grew more powerful. ... Yoda should have either known from the start Kenobi wasn't the right fit for Anakin or figured it out with time and intervened.
    Yoda was also the one who ordered Kenobi to stop Vader after order 66 & never mentioned a thing about attempting to turn him back to the light.
    Everything trickles from the top on down. The Jedi order is certainly no exception.

Many things are blurred in my mind from such a distant past but not that happiness, excitement i felt with my father when the movie was on the huge screen. I’m still a Star Wars fan. There are some things i like less than others but that scene between Vader and Obi Wan was one of the best, very emotional. We can feel the pain of both, the regrets because things could have been different. The 2 of them, the Jedi order made choices that lead to that tragedy as much as Palpatine manipulations.

    It fits with the idea of the lighting. When Vader’s helmet is damaged, each fighter is illuminated by the light of their sabers. Obi-Wan is ALWAYS illuminated by his blue. Vader though starts out red, then for a bit when Anakin is out, his face is lit up by blue, then as Vader returns it goes back to being red but there is still the occasional flicker of blue from Obi-WAN’s lightsaber.

    Awesome points... it finally clicked for me. After rewatching the first two prequels, your statement is very true. Qui-Gon was the father figure that Anakin needed, the person who believed in him and his abilities... the one like nurtured him like a parent. Obi-Wan was as you said a big brother, and in some ways a competitor. In attack of the clones you can see Obi-Wan's arrogance and his lack of positive reinforcement. Always mentioning how superior his abilities are, just like some older siblings can behave. I think after their battle in the third prequel Obi-Wan realizes this hence the tearful regret on his face. Truly tragic is the story of this brotherhood.

It’s just the end of a sad thing with no triumph for Vader because it didn’t mean anything in the end.

    When it comes to Revenge of the Sith, I think Obi Wan was in denial when it came to witnessing Anakin killing the younglings in the temple. He had not truly processed the fact that his Padawan had turned to the dark side and that it was he and the jedi that was also to blame for not believing in him. He did what he had to do because he had to save what was left of the Jedi. He believed Anakin was dead.
    Finding out Anakin/Vader was alive many years later opened up those old wounds. When finally seeing what Anakin had become, Obi Wan never saw Darth Vader the Sith lord, but Anakin his former student and brother. He knew Anakin was held back by the council and that he was the one who crippled him on Mustafar. Obi Wan believed he was the one responsible for completing his transition to the dark side. It wasn't until he finally beat Anakin that some of that guilt was relieved when Anakin told him that Obi Wan didn't fail him and that Anakin chose to kill his former self.
    When Obi Wan finally called him "Darth" he was forced to reluctantly accept Anakin's choice. It's hard to say whether he was mad at him or himself. Most likely both. I'm sure we will learn more in season 2.

    I think you may have missed some of the subtlety in this scene: rewatch it whilst paying particular attention to the light cast by the lightsabers. When we see Anakin face for the first time, it’s illuminated in blue, but the helmet is illuminated in red.
    This changes as the scene progresses and initially, there are some areas of Kenobi’s face were red. By the the end of the scene, the glimpse of Anakin is suppressed entirely by Vader, the face coloured only red.

  • @SamuelDJCox
    @SamuelDJCox Před rokem +4

    Yes, I love this! My personal take-away from the scene is everything you pointed out.
    Anakin is alive, however to survive now he must live as Vader. Anakin knows he did wrong, he is bearing the blood of many in the galaxy on his hands, however he also still stands in a way wronged by everything that failed him. There is so much pride in Anakin still and he wants to have the respect and compassion he was always denied... until he genuinely feels that love he will always hold onto his pride and his ego.
    It is that pride which I think ultimately creates and fuels Vader - he is the ultimate, most pure and powerful version of Anakin that lives with no regrets and simply live up to his full potential of power.
    Vader is also a safe space for Anakin too - a personality into which he can disassociate from the incredible, huge amount of shame and guilt which is truly bottled up inside of him. So long as he plays the part of the powerful, cold Vader he does not have to live in the daily agony of guilt and regret which truly lives at the core of the still-beating heart of Anakin Skywalker...
    I think that's ultimately why it was Luke in the end who saved Anakin, because Luke was both a great source of unconditional love but also a source of incredible pride for Anakin.
    As much as Obi-Wan loved Anakin, there's still only so much an apology can do. Yes, Anakin can see that Obi-Wan feels remorse, however he still cannot give him back that which is now gone.
    Luke, however, gives Anakin both the things he so deeply wants and needs - Luke's call to Anakin back to the light is someone showing him love and compassion that he needed (and did seem to finally get from Obi-Wan), however he also gave him something Obi-Wan could never give him.... that being some genuine pride.
    For all Anakin was told that to love was wrong for the Jedi Order, in the end he knew deep down it wasn't wrong and he followed his heart in loving Padme. So when he finally sees his son and the great man he has become, that completely vindicates him and makes him finally see that yes he may have done awful things... but his love for Padme and the family and children that came from it were truly never wrong. It was always natural, right and human. And to that end, he was finally proven right...
    It's that final realisation which I think ultimately fills him with the immense love and, more importantly, the immense pride he needed to feel in order for him to finally let go of his need for Vader.
    Pride can be found in power, but it also can be found in our achievements. Luke was a complete representation of that - it showed him his love for Padme was always right. Through it they bore two incredible children that grew into incredible, good, brave people.
    That final realisation and incredible PRIDE in the most important good deed of his life, of having brought a great human being into the world - someone who was as heroic and noble, if not a million times more than him, and who also forgave him - something he cannot do for himself - that was the main source of pride that he truly needed in order for him to finally let go and return to the light...

    In the end, Anakin chose his path to the Dark Side. True he was corrupted by Palpatine and the Jedi Order, a collection of "Space Monks", were not sensitive to Anakin's human needs. Anakin didn't confide in Obi-Wan about his problems and doubts keeping everything to himself. Also, he must have suspected that Palpatine wasn't quite right but he just continued down the path of destruction until he thought he was too far to turn back...and then it was.

    • @kingtrentinius659
      @kingtrentinius659 Před rokem +1

      He actually did try to confide in obi wan before he left. Looking for reassurance before he left to go to fight Grevious. Even asking to go with him, since he was going through a rough time after killing Dooku. Instead obi-wan basically said you’re good stay here and ignored his cry for help. Also mentioning he didn’t want to spy on palpatine due to him being the head of the republic and the Jedi always saying they serve that body. Which Obi-wan says it’s not right but do it anyway.
      Anakin confided in alot of people it’s just explained better in the episode 3 book than the movie. Him saying “I’m not the Jedi I should be” was about killing dooku. He told yoda he was afraid to lose someone and yoda basically told him get over it on accident.
      Then he told Mace to not kill palpatine not only to save padme but also because they had ridiculed him heavily for killing count even though obi wan killed maul. To him this showed that the thing he agonized was ok if the council did it and he knew it was wrong. However at this point he felt he couldn’t go back. He did the right thing by stopping the murder of palpatine trying to rectify his wrong, but lost mace in the process. Something he could never fix sending him deeper into self destruction.
      The real issue is that palpatine was the only one who listened to him. His hurt behind killing count , not being a good enough Jedi ,and padme .
      The overall problem with the Jedi was they didn’t try anakin, but wanted him to save them. Teach him things to and reprimand him causing him turmoil only to do it themselves confusing him further. I agree it was Anakins choice, but the Jedi sure didn’t help him as a whole in the way they should have.

    Knowing the fact that Anakin shed a tear at this state in the final episode of the Kenobi show was one of those moments that when someone has consumed Anakin for what may seem to be almost a lifetime like this with a huge black cloud of darkness, there was still a small glance that Anakin was wanting to be forgiven for almost everything that he has done throughout the time of the galaxy to witness (such as the fall of the Republic, the death of Liberty and the Great Jedi Purge). This may be my personal opinion on why he shed that tear, but Anakin was wanting to live a very great life of his own with his fellow Jedi friends as a peacekeeper in the galaxy until everything went downhill when the Dark Lord of the Sith rose up for revenge, causing the Clones to be ordered on executing Order 66 and killing the Jedi members in cold blood to which later made the Chosen One fall into the hands of Darth Sidious and dubbed to be named Darth Vader... then again, the Chosen One was wanting to protect Padmé from the nightmares that Anakin himself was experiencing since he was wanting to do something that was believed to be right.
    However when Vader choked Padmé, Anakin that was dwelling inside of the Sith Lord that's outside of the fallen Chosen One started to feel deep regret for what he has done for siding with the Dark Side and killing his own friends. And when Anakin shed that tear on Mustafar while looking back on what he has done, the conflict between Anakin and Vader was one of deep somber and suffering that Anakin himself felt cold and alone as Vader was now in full control over the Chosen One.
    Moments like when Anakin heard Obi-Wan apologizing to him for all of the things that has happened before/during/after the Jedi Purge in the Star Wars universe is something so emotional and tragic that it makes me (and maybe all of you people) cry on the inside.
    Kudos on making this video and may the Force be with you... and to us all. 💙

    THANK YOU! It always amazes, surprises, and frustrates me how LITTLE obi wan did to try to reason with Anakin on mustafar! In fact, same thing with this new fight! I 100% absolutely believe that he(both times), and Ashoka could have POTENTIALLY brought him back, but at LEAST made him accept that he’s still Anakin skywalker, and that he does still have good in him, and all he has to do is chose to! Every encounter with his previous loved ones is basically like “r u still bad? R u SURE? Ok, screw u!”, but none of them actually tried to reason with him, more than just a sentence or 2 by obi wan on mustafar (WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too little!). With Ashoka and this second obi wan meeting, they literally mention his name, and he says I’m not Anakin anymore, and then she attacks/he walks away! It’s absolutely infuriating how unbelievably insignificant their attempts(if u can even call those “attempts”)to reach him r! I honestly would b VERY surprised if Vader didn’t become MORE hateful, and feel MORE betrayed by his “friends” after those (especially the 2nd and 3rd) meetings, due to the seeming lack of effort they put in! They put WAY more effort into trying to just kill him and end it, than to reach Anakin and try to help him! That’s bad enough as it is, but in both of those cases he actually showed signs of conflict, where u could say Anakin briefly shone thru, which makes it that much worse that they even had an opening....vader had a chink in his emotional armor, but they just gave up! Very....VERY irritatingly annoying and disappointing!

      Well considering how this leads into a 40 year old established narrative. No Vader was never going to turn lol. It always plays out the same

      I agree with your assessment it frustrates me as well especially this last fight. This last fight Anakin was basically begging Obi-Wan to try to bring him back to the light

      Luke was the only one that was able to use emotional negotiation to get to Anakin. You're right that Obi-Wan amd Ahsoka didn't do enough. But they also saw the atrocities he committed. Luke never knew him and wasn't fully awake of the cruelty. He only knew he could feel his father still in there and made it his mission to bring him out and "save him". He committed to that tactic where Ahsoka and Obi-Wan were never sure of how to handle it because their emotions were to close to the pain.
