The song is not about a relationship. it's about Taylor's fears of being irrelevant at her job as a musician as new artists emerge all the time. because at the age of 22 she's already released 4 album so that's what went through her mind at the time.

Regardless of it's meaning/inspiration for her, the listener can interpret it differently. Music is all about what it makes you think & feel. It's poss to connect to her songs w/out knowing all the autobiographical details. I'm sure you were just FYI'ing but, I just wanted to add that how he connected to the song wasn't "wrong" & didn't need correcting.✌️
It can be about both, the feeling of how a women loses her purpose after she turns 35 and how Taylor feels about the realities of being a female musician.
"From the vault" means songs that didn't make the original cut in the album. Since she's re-recording her first 6 albums she decided to include those songs in the re-recordings.
So she wrote this song in 2012 (when she was 22), but she only released it in 2021.
This is about her career, but it could apply to relationships too. Taylor is only re-recording her first 6 albums, they were the ones Scott Borchetta (Big Machine Records) would not sell them back to her. Scott offered her that for every new album, she would get one of her first 6 albums back, which would have tied her to him for a long time. Taylor turned that offer down and walked away, then Scott turned around and sold them to Scooter Braun, for $300 million dollars (Scooter has since sold them to someone else). So, Taylor has done 2 re-records, four more to go until she owns the rights to them, and that is why they are Taylor's Versions, she also adds the vault songs to them, songs that didn't make the original albums.
Amazing that Taylor wrote this at 22 (maybe younger) because she already felt the clock ticking on her career as the music industry puts so much focus on young women in their “ingenue” phase. She reportedly wrote this on a dulcimer while flying from Sydney to Perth.
A genius choice for Swift to bring Phoebe Bridgers in to sing with her on this song since Bridgers is more or less at a similar point in her career that Swift was when she wrote this song.
Also amazing to look at everything she’s accomplished since then and that she just keeps becoming more accomplished and creative as a lyricist.
As for thinking this was about a romantic relationship, I think Swift writes her songs to be both personal and universal. While it was spurred by how the music industry deals with female artists as they age, it can feel personal to a broad spectrum of people. She has a gift for capturing the human condition in her lyrics.

New subscriber here, and shamelessly here for the T Swift content! I love watching people discover her work and offering a fresh, unbiased interpretation. I saw a comment above saying this song isn’t about a relationship, and while I agree I think it’s about her career and worrying about what happens if/when it fizzled out, I love that you were able to view it from the lens of a relationship because that just speaks to the power of music (and Taylor’s specifically) - a song could mean a million different things to a million different people, and the best songwriters know how to make their songs versatile like that. I’d offer up a suggestion for the next song to review but I love absolutely every one of them so I’ll just sit back and wait to see what you react to next!
Same here! I just joined for the Taylor journey and so far I’m not disappointed! I have so many things to say, but I can tell that for someone who’s unfamiliar with Taylor’s music it can be a little overwhelming sometimes (all the suggestions, fan facts etc) and other fans do a great job of suggesting the right things, so I’m sitting back and enjoying:)

Thank you Thank you Thank You for doing Taylor. The other singer is Pheobe Bridgers. Yes, she is going back and rerecording all of her "stolen jewels". So far she has rerecorded Fearless (Taylor's Version (TV)) and Red (TV) from which this song is from. From the vault tracks are songs written in the same time frame (SHE WAS 21!!) but didn't make the album either for continuity or Taylor's old record company. On top of that she has dropped three new albums, folklore, evermore and midnights. Midnights when it was released at midnight on October 21 broke Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music for several minutes. Ten of the songs from the album made the billboard top 10 that week making her the ONLY artist to ever hold all 10 top spots. No body no crime is an absolutely amazing song by her!! & yes shes rerecording her first 6 studio albums. She also added in 'from the vault' tracks that were written for those albums but never included (this -nothing new, is one of the vault tracks) which makes supporting HER albums not only the better choice to support the artist, but the TV albums have many more songs on them!! Sorry also Im pretty new to your channel but you seem to be a very supportive respectful guy, and I saw in another video too you mentioned people could DM you if they needed support which is honestly an amazing thing to do fella. I mention this because Taylor has a LOT of content around the issue of mental health. Some of the best include Mirrorball, This is me trying, Renegade, Forever Winter, anti hero and Clean (which is about a breakup but can be seen in more than one way)Think it would be interesting to get your perspective on any or all of these.😁 I only intended to put up one suggestion I swear!😂

I’ve loved your channel for forever, and it’s so heartwarming to see you on this journey. I highly recommend Taylor’s All Too Well 10min short film. It’s written and directed by her and she won the short film award for it. It’s an incredible piece of art that really sets the bar for how talented of a story teller she can be on screen as well.
My 9 year old writes and plays music because of Taylor (and Queen) and I think the message is sometimes lost that if you have a young, impressionable person that needs a mentor outside of their loved ones, she fills that role in the most talented, kind, and exceptional way. ❤

Man I have so many things to say but I don’t want to overwhelm you 😅 I’m just gonna make a suggestion that is already been made but man the songwriting on that is just excellent!: my tears ricochet and this is me trying (from Folklore), you could also check out the long pond sessions (on Disney +) where she also talks about the story of the song (even though imo, for all the amazing-ness of the live performance, the studio versions are just so haunting)
PS: she always sings live, the only “help” she gets are her back up singers (most of them have been with her for ten years or more, as her band members, and are always introduced individually by their names in her concerts)

I went to a Jingle Bell Ball. I took my younger brother and my mom so my brother got his Logic (whom I honestly did not know at the time but heard of) and my mom got her Backstreet Boys. And obviously I went to see my Taylor. So it was great all around but she was the main performer at the end and I can honestly say being in the same building as Taylor as she performs, knowing all the songs and all the lyrics, that feeling is something else. It feels like whatever tf is going on in the world, and other important things right now just isn't important and it feels like the most important thing is happening now in front of your eyes and there's no where I would rather be than in this moment. Anyways, good reaction. I'll be on the lookout for more Taylor. Nothing against your other content by any means, thank you for your content.

“She’ll know the way and then she’ll say she got the map from me” is Taylor saying the young new stars that will replace her will credit her for paving the way. This is entirely about her feeling like pop stars have a time limit. She already refers to herself as a “geriatric pop star”. She sings it with Phoebe, who was 18 when Red was originally released. I also suggest you listen boygenius, phoebe’s super band with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus. They just released their second album. Highly recommend Not Strong Enough, Cool About It, True Blue, and Salt in the Wound all by boygenius :)

Love this song, and I love Taylor's voice. Taylor is an obviously gifted song writer, but frequently gets panned for her voice. Why, I don't know. I think it's just gorgeous, especially her lower register

Taylor writes or co-writes all of her music, produces a lot of her music, directs some of her videos. She also produced two of her concerts. She plays a 6 string acoustic guitar, 12 string guitar, electric guitar, piano, banjo and ukulele.
She re-recorded her first 6 albums because she didn't own the masters. She signed her first contract at 15. When she left her record label she tried to buy her masters but they wouldn't let her then they sold them to Scooter Braun who had bullied Taylor in the past. She was pissed and decided to re-record those albums. The (Taylor's Version) albums are the re-records. She added songs that didn't make it on the original album. They are Vault Songs. Years ago she took on Apple Music and Spotify. Apple had a free 3 month trial period for listeners but didn't pay the artists during that time. Taylor wrote them an open letter and in less than 24 hours Apple put out a letter saying We hear you Taylor and are changing our policy immediately. Spotify took longer to change their streaming pay. That was years ago so their policies have changed by now. She has been with Universal/Republic for around 6 years now. She wouldn't sign with them unless they agreed to pay ALL of the artists on their label more in streaming. They agreed. During Covid she made two albums and self financed both of them. She didn't tell her label until a week before the release. They are kinda folkish so a completely different genre. She has her own management and production companies. The concert you took your nieces to see she put that out in theaters without going through a studio. The studios wouldn't meet her terms so she went straight to the largest movie theater chain and made a deal with them. She told them what days she wanted the concert played, the theaters had to buy promotional cups and popcorn buckets, very large signage inside so fans could take pictures with it, fans had to be allowed to dance, sing and trade friendship bracelets. Her lucky number is 13. She wanted it to start on Friday the 13th in October. So some Halloween movies pushed back their opening weekend. She doesn't get nearly the credit she deserves!

So as much as we know Taylor's sighed her former record label at the age of 13/14 , and she's one of the 1st artist for that record label. So she considered that man as her second father figure, but when the is at the end Taylor wanted to by her masters but the record label offered her a new deal where when she produces any new album she'll get ownership of her old albums, so the offer is basically a cycle. But she didn't want to do that, and then her whole catalog is sold to someone who's a long time rivel of Taylor who had long history of targeting Taylor and did a lot of online bullying. But she is Rerecording her 6 albums that she don't own, and so for all the re recording had a huge success.
