    Great video that gave me the inspiration to build my own moving bed filter today! Paid particular attention to the location of the bulkhead washer and also adopted your technique of having a non fixed, rotational output pipe return based on water heights within the drum! Hi Andy, Good to see your still putting out videos of pond stuff. I have a question because I'm a bit confused with it all. I have just nearly finished building my pond which is 4 ft deep and about 2ft under and 2ft over ground level. ( about 13600L)I have bought a smart central heating pump and have a shed to house all the filtration. I was going to follow others and have a three barrel system with uv tube etc: but then seen your upflow filter, this was after I watched your moving bed filter and now I am confused. Do I need a biological filter which doesn't get changed too often to allow good bacteria to thrive, and then what ? a moving bed filter and then an upflow filter ? its all a bit much for me. Could you recommend what you think I really need and in which order to place them. Thanks very much, its hard when you have no-one to ask locally. Cheers. Jon Moore

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 2 lety

      Hi mate, the 3 barrel system is a great filter, generally the filtration is comprised of mechanical first then biological and then uv would be, if pump fed uv before filtration, if gravity then uv after filtration. If you decide the 3 barrel system then the last barrel could be a moving bed as most do. The reason I have a upflow filter is used as a fines filter to remove the really small particles and that depends on whether your pump fed or gravity fed on how that would work or you could use the flow from a skimmer like I have. Hope that helps, any other questions let me know mate 👍🏻

    Hello. Can you tell me about this PP treatment you do please?. What does it do for your media?. How do you mix it?. I am buying 50l of Hel x 13. Can you tell me what PP to get and what ratio do I use and how long do I leave it in the PP?. Many thanks

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Kris, PP can be used for sterilising media, nets, equipment etc,
      With the media it also etches the plastic so the bacteria can attach easier and colonize faster, also the media becomes less buoyant.
      There are no measurements available for sterilising quantity, if I remember I used approx 1tbl spoon for every 50L of water.
      the water should turn purple after stirring if not add more PP.
      Leave the media minimum of 4hrs, 24 is better.
      Then add hydrogen peroxide to neutralise the PP, (some dont do this, I do, I don't want to put active chemicals down the drain) add a bit stir, it should go brown, if not again add a bit stir and continue until it looks brown. Throughly wash the media clean before use.
      You can get PP from any koi shop, kusuri make one I think.
      Tip, do not put your hands in the purple water, it will stain them for days, 1 subscriber used his hand to mix and ended up looking like a smurf 😁

      @DerbyKoi  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, there's lots of differing opinions online (there always is lol) some say 4hrs is fine others longer, the reason I left mine for that long was, although it was obvious sterilised within 24hrs, I found it still quite buoyant. So I left it soaking longer mate 👍

      @@DerbyKoi ok yes I understand. Think I will do the same. I'm converting the last two chambers of my multi bay filter from grog to moving beds. I've never looked at moving beds before so new territory for me. Your videos are a great help. Much appreciated.

      No problem, glad I could help, fairly new territory for me too, but as you know biological is just as important as mechanical. Good luck with your upgrades, thanks for your support.

    Hi moving looking good what size pump you are you using. And looks like it's gravety Fed to moving bed are you using 2 inch pipe or 1.5 inch pipe back to your pond
    Thanks Brian

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 3 lety

      Hi Brian, the air pump is 45 lpm, 1 5" pipe connected to the 3" gravity return from the easypod which goes to the pond

      No sorry ment pump from pond to shower before your moving bed

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 3 lety

      It's a 10,000 L vari flow pump which feeds the easypod and bakki river via a splitter and all return via gravity

    Hey I’m using Charles Austin pumps three of them one for pond two for moving bed filter but they are really loud even in my shed with noise insulation foam around what is the foam you are using under your pumps is that why they are so silent?

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 3 lety

      Hi mate, the 2 pumps I'm using are evolution aqua (blue) used for cleaning the pod and is a bit noisy and jebao (white) used for pond air and moving bed and is super quiet, the foam has very little effect on noise, it is used to help reduce the vibration on the EA pump

    Hello, what is this pure pond or solution that you clean to the moving bed barrel filter, and what is its importance, and are there alternatives if it is not available in my country, thank you very much

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi mate, the pure bond solution is live beneficial bacteria, the balls or bomb are the same except they're trapped inside a biodegradable gel that breaks down in water slowly to release the bacteria, the importance of the bacteria is in your pond and filters is it helps create and maintain the necessary nitrogen cycle to keep your fish healthy

    hello can you tell me how you connected it to the eazypod

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 3 lety

      Hi Ricky, it doesn't flow into the easypod, it connects to the easypod outlet return using what's called a strap boss from screwfix.
      The water going into the moving bed is filtered via my bakki river (using floss). Hope that makes sense

      @oliverskinner8962 Před 3 lety

      @@jjohnson4479 it should do the trick as long as you don't over feed them 100mm is quite small even if there are 30 of them I would think this setup would only take 5000 LPH throughput as we had a 3 barrel system before we got a rotary drum filter we had 3 120L barrels with 2 inch pipe connecting each and it could only take 8000 LPH. You must have your mechanical stage before the moving bed filter you do not want any not even a tiny bit of blanket weed or string algae as some like to call it inside the moving bed we learned the hard way !

    Hi,
    I contacted you couples day ago and i am not a youtuber hence my account all over place. After seeing the video and like the way you build your filter in which I have a filter project that might interest you. My idea of filter is to use sieve filter with 60 micron mesh (using in RDF screen ) with automatic clean. So far i did not see it in the market or from DIY enthusiasm. If you interest on the idea then you can contact me to bring this idea into reality. By the way I live in Chaddesden i think near you somewhere. Regards, Van Ho

    Hi, can I ask why did you use HEL-X 13 and not K1 or K1+, I am going to build one but was thinking K1 would be better?

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 3 lety +1

      The reason I chose the helix was, the reviews was excellent for moving bed filters, the helix has more surface area than k1 and k+ media is more suited for mechanical filtration

      Hi Dave, To treat a pond/fish it says 6.8g per 1000 gal
      I couldn't find any info on just sterilising quantity, so I used 1/4 tsp in 100L of water which was prob over kill, make sure the media is fully washed before adding to filters to remove any pp and water needs to be above 10c. If new media I would treat for 7 days.
