Best ePaper WiFi Humidity and Temperature sensor?!

- New Shelly H&T sensor - Shelly Plus Humidity and Temperature sensor with screen.
While you previously needed to buy separate dock for it to be able to power via USB, this one has USB C connection on it + it can be powered by 4xAA batteries.
Device can be added to Home Assistant, but sensor values are still not visible in it. Until it is officially supported in HA, you can use MQTT to add it to Home Assistant.
If using MQTT try Shellies Discovery Gen 2 to added it to Home Assistant.
UPDATE: Home Assistant 2022.7.6 brings native support for Shelly Plus H&T
I personally really like the changes and think that this version is awesome update to previous one.

It's nice that they are keeping themselves relevant in the fast changing market. For sensors with no display I use DIY with esp home. So I like the clean look with the display that I can place anywhere in the house.
Totally agree Claire! Also what's good news is what they said on launch event. All Gen 2 devices should support Matter in future this also future proofs this and other newer devices (Plus series).

This Shelly plus H&T is awesome, can’t wait to get few of them
Shellies discovery script - used for MQTT and Shelly devices has pending support - they are just waiting for device to be officially announced. So that part is also a big plus.
Maybe, everything depends on application and update trigger/rearm intervals imo. You either monitoring, switching, or both😁
I was in contact with dev of Shellies discovery script and he was waiting for device to be announced. He did release new version today for Gen 2 devices with support for Shelly Plus H&T.
Also, latest release of Home Assistant (2022.7.6) had new library that should add support for all announced devices.
Wife approved iot items are hard to find 😄

Just to confirm that you can use it on USB-C with Alkaline battery in. Device will use USB-C as power source.

It would be cool if the display can be used to display other temperature sensor and weather info.
I think in a few months we will have a custom firmware with that stuff.
Nice review, been looking at these for a few of those "wife approved" H&T sensor upgrades ;) I saw you using the IKEA rechargeable batteries, I've had a few devices in the past that didn't work well with them probably because of the 1.2V (instead of 1.5V) on most rechargeable brands, I'm guessing there's been no issue with the Shelly device in this regard?

Thank you Anders! Yes, all those rechargable batteries are lower voltage. Unfortunately because of that some devices require more frequent battery recharge. But I bought that IKEA storage/recharger so have 8 always ready now 😆
Will see how long Shelly will last on those. SwitchBot Meters is holding ok.
@@BeardedTinker great, I'll go find the latest set and the charger, and please let us know if they drain fast, I know it's probably more on the batteries than the device, but having the home automation running on rechargeables seems like the nicest solution 😉
And now a year later I have one and there is still no getting it integrated into HA. It's pretty, yes. But until it has some way to integrate it's useless to me.
Mine is added to HA, but in last few months, updates are really horrible. I get maybe one reading every few days - it's more in unavailable state than not.
The device seams to connect to my wifi initially and it does show on the device itself that it is connecte. But then it seems to be disconnecting, I can not fin it in the Shelly app and my router shows teh device offline.
It goes to sleep when powered via battery and wakes up to send data update. You can temporarily power it via USB to configure or test everything.

That's a GEN 2. Did you already get them? If not, I would hold on a bit. There are some things strange going on with them lately. Not sure if it's latest FW or something in HA has changed...
@@BeardedTinker Damn, thanks a a lot for the warning.... sadly I ordered them 8 hours ago, was deciding between this and Aquaras temp sensor, since I run M2 Hub, but the marketing got the best of me and went with Shelly. But I'm really interested on the issues you mention, to try to see if I can find a work around.
It just stopped connecting to HA. I'll try to factory reset mine and see if it helps. Need to debug it a bit more, but always have other things to do.
The standby power seen on the new version is the LED. 😂😉 You should use a cable whiteout a LED.... Then you should see it uses 0A
Actually LED is just 0.0014A, but device stand by is also very low - 0.0039A with this LED or 0.0025A for just the device :)

In Home Assistant or somewhere else? For Home Assistant I used Shellies discovery script - Gen 2 - github.com/bieniu/ha-shellies-discovery-gen2
But that was for testing. Now I'm using CoIoT s primary integration - that's internal HA integration not needing MQTT.
Instead of a new product launching, Shelly should deliver their 1L relay which is impossible to buy for the last few months.
Yes, looks like even page is not available in the shop for it. Shelly Croatia has a bunch of them in stock on the other hand.

H&T still not supported in HA ??
I have bought a Shelly H&T but having trouble to get it into HA. Firstly when I setup the Wifi it's only connected to my home network when in AP Mode (Allthought I can access it with the Homenetwork IP number). If it turns to normal display mode the unit is no longer visible in my network ?? In HA the shelly intergration is discovering the H&T device. but I do not get any device / entities.
I'm running on the latest version of HA, and shelly intergration and also the 0.12 firmware in the H&T (Even tried the 0.13 beta).
I I read here there should a 'native' support for the H&T. So what am I doing wrong. (I can't also not add it to the shelly app itself since it is not getting thru the setup procedure because it's saying bluetooth is stopped in the last steps of the setup - Added a lot of shelly's with this phone)
So how can I get it runjing in Home assistant ???

I run HA 2023.1 And Shelly Plus H&T 1.12 (I think that's the latest firmware - non beta).
I did configure websocket in Shelly:
enabled Websoket
used default TLS
ws://192.168.1.100:8123/api/shelly/ws
And rebooted plus once again pressed button in Shelly.
Device was added/discovered automatically by HA. And in shelly websocket, two icons were active (websocket and connection)
I bought it and found it a bit useless for my use case. It only updates temperature every 5 minutes or every 0.5 degrees C even when powered which makes no sense. Considering my old Xiaomi sensor offers realtime temperature change I found this really poor.
Did you try changing update values? You can set when to send update data. If changes are minor, it doesn't update data to save battery, and I think it's every 30 minutes or similar, or unless there is 0.5oC temp change, than it autoupdates. Xiaomi also has this - it doesn't update data all the time, it can be every 30-60 minutes unless change is big enough, But you couldn't change this value when to update. On some Tuya Zigbee ones, you can change, but it has really big impact on battery life.

But you can't do that on aqara too as you mention. All devices have sleep and if there is no change in value, they don't report value. But unlike Aqara, you can specify here what the change in temperature or humidity needs to be for it to send update.

Try putting sensor in the fridge and see how it will constantly report temperature until in reaches temp inside. After that it will stop doing so.
Or much easier - just keep USB plugged in power - it will have more frequent updates.
tried to add the sensor to the HA... the sensor is discovered by the HA, but no entity found for the dashboard :-( any hints?
Did you setup everything on device itself. Mine is still working great. I think I have latest firmware (0.14.1).
There were some bugs with HA integration but those were fixed long time ago.
I have enabled Bluetooth, outbound sockets towards HA (ws://192.168.1.36:8123/api/shelly/ws) - but more or less, everything is standard.
Does this support Alexa routines triggers as sensor?
No idea - it should be possible to add it to Alexa and Google smart hubs but I don't use Alexa nor routines, so can't helo you with that. ;)

Did someone tested MQTT already? Topic is dropping this: {"id": 0,"tC":28.5, "tF":83.2} Makes my applications to show 0 instead of the value. How to solve this?

@@somogyvarizoltan0 is state of id field. tC has temperature data in Celsius. So value is ok for ID field.

If it cannot report temperature with 0.1°C resolution minutely or nearly minutely it cannot be the best sensor... It's not usable for precise temperature control in a feedback loop...
Did you try powering it via USB cable? But, sure, for industrial and scientific use, there are far better thermostats. Of course, none operate on WiFi and on battery, but they can measure more precisely - even up to 0,01 or less difference, and update much faster. Again, not on WiFi and battery and not for 30-40€.
Nah, for sensors only Zigbee. Aqara is unbeatable in this space, period. Mesh network, is another unbeatable advantage over Wi-Fi / Bluetooth.

@@BeardedTinker Nope, this comment was thrown at Shelly. I don't like Wi-Fi as a protocol for Home Automation in general unless your hotspot/router is nearby, the signal strength is terrible because of PCB antennas most of the time. I do like their open approach and the choice they give users, i.e. cloud or MQTT. Overall, stability has improved a lot, but devices like this one also clutter the local networks. When I have the choice, I go for ZigBee for everything, but sensors exclusively, unless there is no alternative, which these days is very rare. Again, Aqara is unbeatable for battery life, some of my sensors are going strong for a third year without replacement on a tiny coin cell battery.
When it comes to BT it is even worse, I use few sensors and this protocol should be dropped IMHO for sensors, I use Mi Flora sensors, and temp/humidity clock from Xiaomi (e-Ink) but battery life is abysmal, while the latter works for around 10 months on two coin cells Mi Flora sensors need replacement every 3 months on average and also suffer from poor signal range. I would pay twice for an Aqara Zigbee soil sensor just to get a device that will work at least a year on one battery. I know, that there is a DIY sensor, but I don't know if it will survive outside in the rain but MiFlora works as the seal can withstand watering and the rain 365 days.
Sorry for the rant-like comment, but I don't find it a good product, especially since there are better products available on the market which do exactly that.

What integration you are using - internal or MQTT? Internal should pick it up instantly without any issues while MQTT required Shellies Discovery Script Gen 2.
