We usually set up the puller, take a torch and heat the case around the bearing. Whack the puller a few times, bit of heat, whacks, heat....etc. That way you use minimal heat, while not dragging out too much aluminum messing up the bearing fit. Just a thought, not a criticism. There’s not a year goes by in my shop where I don’t discover new ways to do things.
bearing puller kits ar egood, but it is much cheaper to get an appropriate sized dynabolt (not even $1) from the hardware store, and use that, just as good as a collet, they do the same thing.
Hi Matthew, I have a question; it seems to me that the hammer part of the puller is reversed, wouldn’t it better protect your fingers from pinching with the groove up? Never used one before but will surely do someday. Thanks for the videos I find them quite interesting, I accumulate knowledge for later :-) Good day to you and your family.
Are you sure your supposed to hammer the collets in? (looks like it will damage them). Shouldn't you use a smaller one that just goes in and then tighten the nut to expand it to fit?
I tried one step smaller and there is no way it will expand enough. Keep in mind the collet has fingers that flex. Flex can happen in either direction. It took a light tap anyway.
I just bought an 09 crf 250r a few weeks ago. I split the cases and the transmission bearings were a little notchy (they didn’t spin smooth) so I will be replacing them. I checked the crank bearings and they seem fine they spin nice and smoothly and no play. Since I already have the cases split should I also go ahead and replace the crank bearings?
Yes, absolutely replace the mains. I would recommend rebuilding the crank with a rod kit as well. Watch this video also: czcams.com/video/RLnmTRyqMIA/video.html
I forgot to mention the owner before me did install a hot rods top end kit along with a hot rods crank and main bearings to. Should I still be replacing the main bearings?
The reason I had to split them was because the bike would not go into first and fifth gear. Also the right case was cracked. The previous owner had a guy weld the crack but I ordered a used right case off of eBay. I disassembled the gear shift mechanism and transmission, everything looked good so I temporarily put the cases back together and tested the gear shift mechanism and it now goes into all the gears just fine. I’m not sure how many hours are on the bottom end though.

Cool thanks for the tip.
Thanks Matthew, the tip about removing the rollers and cage helped a lot, saved me a trip to the machine shop.

You should do a video on how to measure and set float height on a 2 stroke carb.
I'm working on a 2 stroke jetting guide. Float height will be covered.
What a wonderful tool.

I think you are right. I never paid attention to that. The hammer slides off and can be reversed in 2 sec.

Did you find a smaller collet? I'm trying to do water pump bearings like you mentioned.
No. Google "concrete expansion anchor blind bearing". You can use a concrete anchor and then attach to slide hammer.

How many hours on the new bottom end? Why did you have to split the cases in the first place?

I also did find some metal shavings in there to.
use a hose clamp to collapse the collet ...
Great tip! Thanks!
Got the tool
Got the same bike
Same bearing ive yanked on it as hard as i can still wont budge
Heat the cases to 200°F
Was the case hot in this video? I tried doing mine the same way today and it didnt budge lol maybe it wasnt hot enough i have a little blow torch
I don't think so.
Damn lol every video on youtube makes it look so easy
Start at 3:00 thanks me later
Can I reuse the transmission bearings
If they inspect ok...sure.
Or you can use plain ole white bread... czcams.com/video/8GGQA-EpI1o/video.htmlm16s
