Donovan I consider the greatest solo acoustic performer on the planet. His timing is outstanding.

There are great musicians. There are great poets. There are great entertainers.
Donovan is truly all of the above

I'm 72, been a fan all my life, a semi pro musician irish, country, blues, rock n roll etc, but always sang and played his songs. Thanks you sincerely for these videos. Rodge David Kidderminster UK

This is beautiful and I remember seeing this on television during the Summer when I was 7 years old. I was mesmerized and instantly became a fan, my favorite song being “Atlantis”. Thank you so very much for sharing this amazing memory with us. ❤

Fun fact, and verified by Donovan a few years ago:
In the verse starting around 6:48 he sings "lassie lay down with lassie, laddie lay down with laddie". You can see Mary shoot him a little glance, and then he shrugs with his left shoulder.
That one got by the censors.

With all the debate about Atlantis still ongoing, Donovan got it right first time out. "And if the elders of our time choose to remain blind, let us sing and dance..."

I think that when you look up “flower power” in the dictionary, you should find a photo of Donovan.

The first four songs appeared in a live record edited in Italy 28-11-1974 called: Donovan (Saar edition Milano). The third song is: Come to me now joy fully.

By those younger, it should be noted that the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was soon canceled after this because of their political stance against Nixon and the Vietnam war, which was in full swing during this period. Donovan was a sort of anti-establishment hippie, folk music musician that was becoming more and more popular during that tumultuous time. I personally had 3 of his albums at that time.

This is truly amazing. I have had the wonderful song that Donovan sang with Mary and Jennifer in my head since watching this performance on the Smothers Brothers show in 1969, but I could never find it again - until I happened upon this link 52 years later! Does anyone know what the title is and if this song appeared on any of Donovan’s albums? (The lyrics were hard to understand then and now.) I can’t thank you enough for posting this.

The song is generally called "To Love Me" and has never been officially released. This performance of it can be found on the Reedy River Bootleg.

It just means lay down boy and girl ie time to go to sleep. It’s Scottish vernacular and I’m Scottish and lay doon every night about 12.30 pm.

Why did he always do such weak and weird songs live, ones he never even bothered to record? Donovan always sabotaged himself.

He was thinking of us in the future, he knew it would be fantastical to play songs only heard once back then, only to resurface 50 years later for all to enjoy. That's real magic us humans can do.
Plus he knew playing songs to death kill a good song, we all know that.

No, I think it's Wear Your Love Like Heaven, but creepy in a good way, especially the film. Not nearly as creepy as song from a few years prior that time by different artists.
