When I first learned how to roll, it was back in 1996, when I started my ninpo training. I was much younger then and nearly invincible. :) I injured my left hip back in 2017 and am now ready to start working on rolls again. It became clear to me that in order to avoid re-injury, and not reinforce any bad movement patterns, I have to start with the basics. What a lot of instructors don't realize is that the methodology is different when teaching an adult how to roll. Thanks for taking the time to break this down!

I'm returning to Bujinkan after a break of several years. In my previous dojo we trained on mats, and it's then easy to get away with bad technique. Now I train on concrete and getting the proper technique of rolls is important to avoid injury. Thanks for both demonstrating the rolls and for the high technical quality of the videos. Thanks for this. I often find my head touching the mat when I do a backward-roll, so it's helpful to see it clearly explained and demonstrated here. Also, I've never had the front-roll explained to me the way you did it, threading the arm between the legs to get into the right position to go over the shoulder...I think that little detail will be very helpful.

Easily the best instruction on rolling ever put to video. I'm just coming back to Bujinkan again after many years away and this step by step process is perfect for adults who need to ease back into it without injury. My first Dojo didn't even teach rolling as well or as progressive as this so my sincerest gratitude to Sensei for sharing this. A very big thank you.

First, I want to thank you sir. because I've been trying to learn basic rolling for nearly 2 years with no success, but this video gave me courage, and the technique to go with it...
I have a question, though (This has been on my mind because its the common saying among practitioners and I wonder whether its right): Most practitioners say the correct form of rolling is along the spine (not the shoulder), but in this video, you emphasize that the roll must be performed along the shoulder. What I got from this was that its right to direct the movement a little to the side, instead of rolling directly along the spine. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong...

Many times, in the backward roll the problem comes from not exhaling and not getting enough momentum.
And it always helps to start from fully sitted position.

I trained a lot as a kid got hurt a lot. I fell out of practice as an
adult when I lost my health insurance. I've always had poor health
training always really hurt but i had to have these skills because well
people didn't like the fact my name was Cohen even though I was not
raised Jewish and may or may not have Jewish blood. I changed my name to
my step fathers German name they found other reasons to pick on me. As
an adult i enjoyed many years of relative peace until my health rendered
me disabled and homeless now I have to content with people trying to
stalk rape and kill me .... for sport.... I have been trying to train on
my own you videos gave me techniques that saved me and my friend from
being beaten by multiple attackers. THANK YOU I executed a break fall
and roll (though i failed he throw) that got me out of a head lock and
sandwich punch to the temple. Though the fight ended up a draw its
better that being dead. I'm now in trained with a instructor still cant
do a break fall right in class ( I tense up) but I did it right in a
fight where it mattered most. Why did i do it right on the street
because I wasn't afraid of falling I was afraid of being punched in the
head. My instructor is a relatively new instructor so I sometimes look to people with more experience to fill in the gaps the way you break it down really helps.

I enjoy your technique it seems safer than the forearm roll and foot jump technique ;however, it seems you don't have a lot of speed using that technique... I guess that is why you call them basic rolls. The hands over forearm roll is pretty difficult to pull off as well. Avoidance techniques are always handy because someone can't hit what they can't catch...

I am the guy in Kuntao and silat and used to do Danzan Jujitsu where the Gracies are monkeying around after there sale of Judo as BJJ. You have great stuff and your explanations are par excellent! Do you combine other strategies from other ideas aka Martial Styles? Kito Ryu, Daito Ryo, Silat, Kuntao, ...etc. Just trying to make it interesting as the same stuff is getting boring. Ukemi is Great and I can see the reason why you would not want to get up with swords and fists, Feet, and long weapons being above. I will search your channel as I know you probably did more than I could search your channel for. I hope that YouTub is still funding you and other creators? You do Martial Arts justice. Peace Favor Your Sword.

@@AkbanOrg GREAT! I have been doing front rolls and while in the front rolls I watch my opponent and draw my blades, pistol, or transition to a log/ long body roll to take out both the legs and grab one hand behind the ankle and elbow the knee and put my hand or feet or a combination of both behind each knee and roll back out the same way I rolled in to throw him forward into an opponent behind me. Either that or I just continue to roll after the elbow strike and a knee or kick to the head since his head usually drops after the elbow to the knee cap and IF necessary roll to his head to finish a dangerous encounter. I know you can not post that on CZcams anymore but...what can you post? Anyways, then I roll to cover. I love Ninjutsu but I incorporate less physical stuff because I am small and old. My Uncle was Brendan Lai who taught 7 Stars Praying Mantis, but also did the Kuntao stuff . I hated the foot work as it did not match the foot work of the Western Boxer and I tried to get my Uncle to adjust the darn Foot Work for things like knee on knee strikes like in Kuntao. If it hurts or you think your breaking something, your doing it wrong, Watch the Video again, It's a damn good video for simple rolls, As a great man once told me, "Have you ever seen a dog run down a hill and it trips up?" It simply turns it's head and rolls out and then keeps on running down the hill. It's a head thing more than anything, Once you relax and try it the more it makes sense. I'd say your trying to roll with your head not the back of your shoulder, It's a flow. I hope that helps.

Giving medical advice on youtube is not professional. I suggest you
    1. Get a medical assessment about your knee from an Orthopedic Doctor
    2. Train with an instructor knowledgable enough to adapt the training for you
